This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

SOTD is JHAG Mad Madame. Another that's been largely in hiding since the weather got warmer.

PinkissimoAndPearls · 09/09/2016 10:51

Just popping on to say Indulge Fragrances which I think is part of the Fragrance shop has Mary Greenwell perfumes on offer - I just bought Fire for £19.50 and am thrilled with it.

SlinkyVagabond · 09/09/2016 17:27

Remember I said I had Prada Ambre lurking, well I dug it out today and yes like it. Not very long lasting, but as I think I paid about 10 quid for it it's ok.
My handbag though smells bloody amazing, I stuck the card from Dior in the side and it's just gorgeous. I'm getting my self a decant of that.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 09/09/2016 20:05

PinkiePie I completely concur!! I can't wait to try one or two more variations of Green Tea - it is such a refreshing, cleansing, exhilarating scent!! Unfortunately my bank balance is looking rather decrepit these days so waiting until payday in a couple of weeks!!!

My dear friend in England sent me a few bottles of Milton Lloyd perfume. I had never heard of them!! I have been unwell recently and a box arrived today with a selection of perfumes. They were £5 a pop but they are actually really nice. How had I not heard of them before???

BaronessBomburst · 09/09/2016 23:12

SerenDipitee If you love Chanel No 5 then I think you would like vintage Arpege. The current formulation? I'm not so sure. It's not so sophisticated. There's none of the delicate powderyness I find in No 5 or early Arpege.
So, I couldn't say you'd like it or not. To my nose they don't have much in common.
I would say the modern Arpege is heavier, like Coco is.

I have a vintage Arpege, and a new bottle and I keep meaning to do a wrist of each and a proper comparison.

I have found my Autumn scent!

I don't tend to wear perfume every day as I work from home, but I do wear it every weekend. So I usually just have three-ish on the go and like to get a new one for each season. The others open right now are Jo Malone Earl Grey and Cucumber, Chanel No 5, Lancôme Poeme and Narciso Rodríguez Eau de Parfume.

This is all of course in justification of the splurge I have made Blush! Gallop de Hermes. Oh my gosh I am in love! Initially I was unsure because the scent that is supposed to fade to "leather", starts off a bit Dettol/ TCP. But after a while it is this gorgeous warm, leathery smell. All reminiscent of leather armchairs, fireplaces and a peaty Scottish malt in hand!

I also love the packaging because you choose the colour of the leather strap and when you replace the lid it sounds like the gallop of horses hooves. Complete marketing twaddle but charming nonetheless!

shins · 10/09/2016 08:11

Moden Arpege is unrecognisable. The vintage is beautiful and can be got cheaply enough on etsy or ebay, I got 50mls for about 40 euros.

I'm glad it's autumn. I wear the same old thing in the summer: L'Artisan Safran Troublant or Seville a l'Aube. Time to break out the more complicated smells!

MissBattleaxe · 10/09/2016 09:17

Pinkissimo- Mary Greenwell Fire is indeed excellent. I'm wearing my 19.50 bottle today in fact. The Mary Greenwell prices in The Fragrance Shop make them the best value around as the quality is so high. The purse sprays will make excellent Christmas gifts- £7.50, posh gold atomiser and nice box.

LastGirl I have tried Milton Lloyd. They are good value as they are guaranteed to last at least six hours. They are definitely dupes, although the official line is that they are not and any similarity is coincidence. I do wear Milton Lloyd Kudos often. I love it. I read somewhere that it smells like Terre D'Hermes, but I've never tried that so wouldn't know.

However Milton Lloyd also owns Taylor of London who now make Tweed, Panache and the wonderful Chique. I love all three and they're cheap as chips. Chique reminds me of Estee Lauder Knowing but its under a fiver.

Shins I'm so glad you came out with it. I thought it was just me!

After the latest reformulation, and massive drop in price, I did really go off it. It still smells nice, and it suits me, and it's now cheap enough to wear everyday (something I'd dreamed of 25 years ago), but it's totally lost its magic. It's no longer 'put it on and feel special, a million dollars, expensive, elegant'.
Maybe familiarity breeds contempt?
Yet the vintage bottle I collected back in August still does this to me.....
It's like mourning a lost lover.
I need to find a new one!

I'd have Tauer but can't afford him. Grin

PinkissimoAndPearls · 10/09/2016 10:25

Purse sprays you say?

God I love the old L'Arpege - I have a tiny miniature and every so often I take the lid off and have a sniff. I used to alternate between this and Paloma Picasso Grin What do people think of Eclat D'Arpege? I have it on "my list" as it looks like a good price but I haven't tried it.

SerenDippitee · 10/09/2016 10:43

Thank you Baroness and shins - onto eBay I go!

I'm going into town today and will have a look for the MG purse sprays. They only seem to have Lemon online.

teta · 10/09/2016 10:57

Eclat d'arpege is a beautiful fresh light floral musk.I love the Wisteria note in it but it's totally dissimilar to Arpège.
Sotd is Mandragore.I normally love this but it's seriously annoying me today.I'm tired and headachey ,maybe that's why

BaronessBomburst · 10/09/2016 12:51

I remember sniffing Éclat and being disappointed but it was so long ago I want to sniff again.
It's on my list, along with Jeanne and Rumeur.

BaronessBomburst · 10/09/2016 13:07

This has been on for a couple of weeks, and everytime the seller relists he puts the price up. Confused
I'd be tempted to make him a cheeky offer of a tenner, especially as it's only 30ml EDT. I think it's from the 80's going by the box but someone else might know better.

I paid £18 for an unboxed 100ml EDT from 87/89, but a part-used 120ml (100ml left) from the 70s just went for £10.50. I was sorely tempted but how much Arpege do I need?

ive got eclat d'arpege and it is lovely in it's own right but not really anything like the original. beautiful in its own right though. i got it really cheaply on allbeauty and it was definitely worth the twelve pounds i paid for it

MissBattleaxe · 10/09/2016 13:27

Baroness- I loved Lanvin Rumeur. It was created by Francis Kurkdjian so you know it's going to be quality. It has a very vintage feel.

Regular perfumista under new name... who am I? SoTD is a sample of Hayari's New Oud. It could be a scrubber unless it improves quickly.

SerenDippitee · 10/09/2016 16:25

Back from town. Fragrance Shop only had purse sprays of Lemon and Plum in stock. Tried Plum but it was a total scrubber for me - plasticky and cloying. Fire, however, I loved INSTANTLY so I went mad and got the 50ml for £19.50.

SerenDippitee · 10/09/2016 16:41

Me again. Cannot stop sniffing my wrists. Adore Fire. The top notes are really reminiscent of something that my mum wore when I was growing up; I'll get her to have a sniff when I see her next but I think it might be the bergamot and grapefruit from Eau de Rochas.

shins · 10/09/2016 19:33

Arpege is pure 50s glamour, like a kiss from the past. I actually recoiled at the new version. But there are lots of beautiful well-made modern perfumes, mostly from the smaller houses, that recreate that million dollar feeling.

BaronessBomburst · 11/09/2016 11:24

Yesterday's SOTD was Tauer Lonesone Rider. I promised myself I'd try it again and on a scorching hot day, with a simple black dress and minimal silver jewellery, it seemed to suit.
I'm still fascinated how a clean scent can smell so dirty. ;)
It's tobacco, leather and soap. It's just not me but I'd like to smell it on a man. I found myself wondering if it would suit Aiden Turner?
By the evening I could still smell it; it's certainly long lasting, but fed up of smelling like someone else I squirted on some vintage Arpege before going to bed, and fell in love all over again.
I don't know what today will be.....

OCSockOrphanage · 11/09/2016 12:22

SoTD is Lady Vengeance, for the traffic warden who ticketed me yesterday, despite my car clearly displaying a permit for the car park. Rose, patchouli and vanilla are the main themes here, and it's one of my favourites from the JHaG discovery set. None have been such hits that I have been tempted into a FB, but this and Another Oud would be the front runners, with Moon Dance trailing in third place. I do quite like most of them.

MissBattleaxe · 11/09/2016 16:27

I have a bottle of vintage Arpege. It's a 100ml bottle with just over 20-25ml left if anyone fancies a swap?

OP posts:
SerenDippitee · 11/09/2016 17:30

MissB I'd be very interested but don't have much that you might be interested in - an almost full bottle of Jo Malone pomegranate noir bath oil or an unopened, sealed bottle of No 5 body lotion?

MissBattleaxe · 11/09/2016 18:43

Oh Gosh, nothing that fancy! a few samples or an unloved half bottle would be good! Not your best stuff!
