This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

Ok, I could do with some perfume pointers please. I am looking around for some new scents - I don't wear scent everyday but I would like to - if I give you some of the perfumes that I like could you perhaps make some suggestions of some new scents that I might like?
I like;
Heritage by Guerlain
Mitsouko by Guerlain
Tuskan Leather by Tom Ford
Fahrenheit by Christian Dior as worn by 1st boyfriend in 1989!

I know I like quite earthy smells and I want to try something new i want to smell sexy Wink

IPMMSc · 07/09/2016 13:18

Just put some scent on, I found some Minotaure by Paloma Picasso - I had forgotten that there was a very small amount left in the bottle.
Still like it!

FrustratedFrugal · 07/09/2016 16:49

IPM go to Les Senteurs and check what they offer from Chypre, Woody, Oriental, and Leather/Tobacco families.

SOTD CDG Avignon. A proper incense perfume, have forgotten how much I like this.

MissBattleaxe · 07/09/2016 18:29

Hi IPM!

First of all, you have great taste. There are some real classics on your list. I recently tried Molinard Chypre D'Orient, which smells like Mitsouko without the peaches. It was an excellent chypre and very good value.

Fahrenheit is gorgeous- very leathery.

You might like Papillon Anubis or Salome. You can buy samples from the Papillon website. It's a small outfit. The Nose is Liz Moores who has only made four scents but they are all sensational.

Since you like leathery stuff, you might like Parfums D'Empire Cuir Ottoman. Bottega Veneto is also good. You might also like Dzing by L'Artisan Parfumeur.

Thank you! I will Google these scents and enjoy hunting for them! Smile

Can I ask all the perfumistas extraordinaire on this board what you think of Elizabeth Arden perfumes??

I have Fifth Avenue and Green Tea...I have heard amazing things about Sunflowers, Youth Dew, Beauty, Red Door, Splendor....I looked online and the prices seem too good to be true!!! What do you all think????

Judydreamsofhorses · 07/09/2016 22:44

SOTD was Miu Miu. I really want to get into my proper Autumn perfumes, L'air de Rien, Mitsouko, the Liz Earle I've not even worn yet, but it's still too warm.

lastgirl I've not worn Elizabeth Arden perfume in years, but used to like Sunflowers. Red Door's not my cup of tea, but I know lots of people love it. Youth Dew is actually Estée Lauder, and to me quite a heavy "older" smell, but I think I possibly associate it with my mum wearing it when I was little.

MissBattleaxe · 08/09/2016 09:35

LastGirl- I think EA is a mixture.

I didn't like Splendor or Sunflowers or Beauty or Red Door.

However- the whole of the Green Tea range and all the flankers that includes, is excellent. I particularly like Green Tea Nectarine Blossom. They make great presents or great treats for yourself and I haven't tried a Green Tea flanker that I don't like!

I think Fifth Avenue is gorgeous and very good value. I rate it as a good everyday scent as it's not too overpowering for offices. All those freesias!

As Judy says, Youth Dew is Estee Lauder and I think it's terrific. It's a very heady, rich oriental that Mae West used to use. I wouldn't advise a blind buy or too many sprays. Sillage is nuclear!

SmileThanks so much Judy and MissB!! I love Green Tea so next pay day I might treat myself to one of the variations!! I think I'll pass on the others then, at least until I get a chance to test them.

Thanks again - you were a massive help!!! SmileSmileFlowers

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 08/09/2016 12:44

Lastgirl this was the first summer I had a Green Tea fragrance and I loved it. Had always disregarded them before but it was perfect for summer days as refreshing. About £7 for a bottle too in closest cheapy cosmetic place.
SOTD is Bulgari goldea. A lovely warm patchouli and musk fragrance sample. Think the "divine splendour of the sun on the earth" may be exaggerating!

Judydreamsofhorses · 08/09/2016 13:00

SOTD is Frederick Malle Lipstick Rose. I absolutely adore this - it was a bit too much over summer but felt perfect for today when it was chilly and a bit foggy in the morning.

teta · 08/09/2016 15:01

Lipstick Rose is beautiful in cooler weather.I also tend to wear Rose/Violet perfumes in Autumn/Winter .

Ormonde Jayne Frangipani is my SOTD.This smells warm and fresh and lasts fairly well in cooler weather. In the hot temperatures of the Med.it smelt thin, ephemeral and disappointing for some reason.

cressetmama · 08/09/2016 17:06

Thank you MissBattleaxe for the reminder for Dzing! Love the rubber and leather, and it seems appropriate after a day with a paintbrush in my hand, re-oiling the windows against the winter weather ahead.

Just popping my head up to say that I love love love Avignon, Cuir Ottoman and 'Air de Rien. Great to be reminded of them and I must dig out my decants now we're moving into autumn. Lovely stuff.

Today I am wearing Isparta by Parfumerie Generale, but it's been warm and sunny here and it feels a bit heavy. Something lighter tomorrow!

teta · 08/09/2016 17:26

Loads of l'Artisan in Tk Maxx online.I'm debating over Passage L Enfer.

SerenDippitee · 08/09/2016 19:52

Oh, teta, dangerous stuff - my credit card is twitching after looking at the tk maxx website.

I've wanted to try Arpège for a while and they have 100ml edp for £29. If I loooooove No5, will I like Arpège?

Also interested in any insights on L'Artisan Figuier Extrême and Skin on Skin. Both look like my sort of notes...

Uricon · 08/09/2016 22:20

Hi

New, I did post a few weeks ago but fail in change from apportioned number to a name.

I love these threads and have lurked for ages

My SOTD -Giorgio. Nothing to do with Signor Armani... the Other One. A friend wore it and I could have sworn it was Hermes 24 Faubourg which i love and wear a lot. I was amazed to discover that it was the infamous restaurant banned sillage monster of my youth (I didn't wear it then, Opium addict) so got some.

It is surprising...no prizes for complexity but a good orange blossom vibe, lasts well and doesn't kill an elephant at 20 paces (perhaps my nose is older, but noone has backed off in horror so far)

Jolly well priced too, now.

PersisFord · 08/09/2016 22:33

Hello........do you knowledgable people mind being bothered by a rank beginner? I have problems with perfume - lots that smell amazing on other people seem to be v unpleasant on me. I have 2 Jo Malone ones - nectarine and honey, and jasmine and mint - which are both lovely but they are expensive and I would like a change. But the number of times I've had a squirt of something delicious in a shop, only to end up frantically scrubbing at my wrists in a public toilet trying to get the stuff off as I am nauseating myself by my smell.

Is this a thing? Is it in my head? Is there any hope for me??????

PersisFord · 08/09/2016 22:35

Ps I am loving the jasmine and mint but on me it is pure mojito - not a touch of jasmine. My dad says it's because I have acid sweat Hmm

MissBattleaxe · 08/09/2016 23:05

Hello Persis and welcome! Everyone is welcome on this thread.

Sounds like you need a big pile of samples, since scent seems to be hit or miss on your skin. Try the Perfume Society Discovery Boxes, or The Fragrance Shop Discovery Club. You can wear a sample for a couple of days and see if it agrees with you before taking the plunge. Don't forget you can sell used bottles of unloved on eBay. I buy and sell loads on there and have never been short changed.

I know what you mean about perfumes smelling good on others but not on you. I loathe Black Opium for example, but asked a stranger in a pub what incredible perfume she was wearing. She smelled beautiful. You've guessed it!

Teta-thank you for the heads up on L'Artisan on the TKMaxx site.

Veering towards Passage d'Enfer but Ambre Extreme....decisions.

Timbuktu new to me

PersisFord · 08/09/2016 23:16

Ooooh a discovery box!! That's exactly what I need!!!!

Thank you for te welcome too. I bet you all float around in a beautiful aura of fragrance. I've got a REALLY keen sense of smell, so I appreciate people like that a lot, can make my day just walking past you!! I always assumed it was a world that was lost to me......but you have given me hope!! Grin I'll be back when i have tried some samples!!!

MissBattleaxe · 08/09/2016 23:28

Teta - thanks for the tk maxx tip. I'm keen to try timbuktu. I think I'd like to try vetiver in my next purchase. I do seem to have settled down z bit now I have a range of scents. But im not sure I csn manage a no spend until November!

I generally only have classics just now and a limited collection (although far more than before ). Or maybe big housenough perfumes if not classics (guerlain and estee lauder) I'm not quite sure what counts as a classic. I'd like to get my hands on more stuff to try. Is doing decants for swaps hard?

I'm intrigued by what I like for a few days and what I find myself returning to lots. Things smell different on different days. Don't know if it's me or the weather.
