Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

SOTD is Michael kors Sporty Citrus. Quite straight forward but really non threateningly citrus/ acidic which feels right for meeting school teachers in the heat.
I've also got Lynx Urban Tobacco & Ginger by my desk which was recommended on a perfume blog I like. Yes Lynx, the teen boys scent of choice that stank out my classroom in 90's. Not my usual go-to place for scent but interesting and autumny. Will be spraying DH and maybe even myself liberally! Expect to be ex-communicated by all both IRL and MN!

Slinky I heard a Jlo one (I think Desoleo/ desolo) is awesome for price/ celeb. Not seen it to try it though.

Sorry-
Fragrance shop!

teta · 29/08/2016 20:49

I'm staying in a house on a Cornish beach this week.Hence I've brought all my beachy themed perfumes with me.Today Fleur de Liane -salty sea air overlaid with a lactonic note and tropical greenery. Its been an absolutely beautiful day here with an Azure sea and Wedgewood blue sky.Big groups are still barbequeing on the beach underneath our bay window having been here all day.I've never seen so many people stake out their corners with windbrakes, chairs, tents and cots. Its been an education

.Tomorrow depending on the weather either Sel Marin by James Heeley or Wood, sage and Sea Salt by Jo Malone.
MissBattleaxe · 30/08/2016 13:58

Haven't been on much lately due to school hols etc so I'll start by saying:

YES- many celeb scents really are worth looking at-
SJP Lovely as mentioned above,
Madonna Truth or Dare as mentioned above,
Adam Levine For Her ( sandalwood and cheap as chips),
Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights ( total dupe of Prada Amber)
JLo Deseo ( Tiare flower, gardenia, coconut).
Queen by Queen Latifah- rich, deep vanilla.
Liz Taylor White Diamonds- Big aldehydes in traditional 80s style ( I love it).

I also rate the David Beckham range for men. I haven't sniffed any I don't like yet.

As for discount fragrance websites- I really recommend Fragrance Direct and allbeauty.com. Absolute bargains and I've never been disappointed.

AnotherPinkie Lynx Iced Musk and Ginger is fabulous. DH wears the Tobacco and Amber one and I will be nicking it in the autumn- it's great and only £4.

I've sniffed lovely orientals on men who do not look like Tom Ford fans.
I'm fairly sure we can thank Lynx for that - they now have Oud Wood & Dark Vanilla!

SheStoodInTheStorm · 30/08/2016 17:15

Hello!
First time posting here. What do you do if the scent you like is discontinued! Has happened with two of mine (one was my wedding perfume) and I've struggled to find anything else I like. I'm not au fait with scents and notes and different smells - just if I like or don't like Blush

teta · 30/08/2016 18:21

Shestoodinthestorm look on eBay as discontinued perfumes are often still available.Alternatively look up your favourites on Fragantica to see if there are any similar scents listed. One of my favourites was discontinued several years ago and I've just managed to source a bottle in Brussels.
Sotd is Sel Marin which smells predominantly woody and spicy on a much duller day than yesterday.Kids still went boarding in their shortie wetsuits which appear to be essential here.
Yes, i would agree with MissBattleaxe All beauty is a really good website for perfumes/cosmetics - usually with free delivery.

MissBattleaxe · 30/08/2016 18:52

SheStoodInTheStorm- if you want to tell us what it is we might know a decent smellalike?

Happy to see new names on here, welcome you all. Holidays make me less obsessive about scent, so SoTD was a snatch from DS's Terre d'Iris, which he snaffled from me.

Teta, wetsuits are essential in Cornwall. Enjoy the beach.

SerenDippitee · 30/08/2016 21:13

Really impressed by Lovely. I paid £23 for a 100ml edp, plus full-size shower gel and body lotion which actually smell like the scent on me, unlike others (I'm looking at YOU, No5 body lotion). Fantastic value, although I didn't consider that the gift box would deprive me of an individual bottle box for my scent drawer!

Interestingly, it has taken me straight back to the early 2000s when I wore Coco Mademoiselle and had a boyfriend who wore L'Eau d'Issey, and to my first graduate flat share with a flat mate who wore L'Instant de Guerlain. It doesn't share that many notes with any of them, I don't think, but there's some thematic link between them and it smells very much of its time as a 2000s scent to me.

Anyway - excellent value and a perfect work scent to go back to school - as a teacher I'm very careful about what I wear to work!

SheStoodInTheStorm · 30/08/2016 23:15

Thanks for the tips!

My wedding perfume (well, it was my "special occasion perfume") was Stella McCartney 'In Two' and the other one I really liked that I am nearly at the end of is Ghost 'Anticipation'. I got excited seeing the box for the Ghost one today in a little chemist...turns out it was the body lotion. Sad

SheStoodInTheStorm · 30/08/2016 23:16

Apologies if they are just EDT and not perfume...but if a novice here!

SheStoodInTheStorm · 30/08/2016 23:17

Bit of*

SheStoodInTheStorm · 30/08/2016 23:18

May even be "In Two Peony"

(Sorry for the succession of posts)

SerenDippitee · 31/08/2016 00:41

A friend of mine had Stella in Two when it came out and IIRC the idea was that it separated the floral peony top notes and amber base notes of Stella McCartney for Women into two different products and gave you the option of combining them to create different effects. So, my first port of call would be Stella McCartney for Women to see if that has enough peony for you. I've looked it up in Perfumes: The Guide and Luca Turin compares Stella to Narcisco Rodriguez for Her and SJP Lovely (as discussed above). Also potentially worth trying!

lasttimeround · 31/08/2016 07:35

The lynx recommendations have me intrigued. I need to check this out. I have only yucky (although also slightly sweaty teenage) associations with lynx.
I felt almost raging with the need for perfumes and ended up buying tuberose gardenia and youth dew (the bath oil) in small bottles at HoF day begore yesterday despite helpful suggestions for dupes. I'm not sure what's up with me as I'm not like this usually. Anyway now I have one good example of most categories and I feel calm. But I'm declaring a no shop Sept and Oct for myself.

Has anyone experienced anything similar when getting into scent? I'm a little worried that I'm somehow unhinged atm. I've always had a rather fussy nose (I suspect) that's not new but I often resolved that by simply not buying anything if I didn't like what was available. A few days ago I just couldn't my mind to move on and when I was smelling other things I was getting almost angry cos it wasn't 'right'. Ive started new meds recently and was wondering if it's them. Or maybe I have awakened this slumbering beast within by paying more attention to smells and now it's up and wants feeding.

Fresta · 31/08/2016 07:55

Hi everyone- i used post a couple of years ago but haven't been back for a while- this thread caused me to amass a collection of 20+ bottles and I've been addicted ever since! (anyone fancy a listing or posting photos of their collection?)

Anyway, I just wanted some advice- I am looking for a perfume to wear on holiday in Italy (amalfi coast) in Oct and want something which is classy and epitomises the Italian style- was thinking the Aqua di Parma Blue medittereanean one (fico di amalfi?) but would like some other choices.

SOTD for me is going to be Serge Lutens fleurs de Oranger.

lasttimeround · 31/08/2016 09:07

20+ bottles. I am clearly not alone.
I love herba fresca which is green and herby and which I bought in Venice 10 years ago! But more orangey is probably more Italian I'm guessing. Amalfi coast idea. I don't really know that much.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 31/08/2016 09:25

Thanks SerenDippitee for taking the time to check that out for me!

The bottle I had was just one - no mixing or anything! It was "In Two Peony" I think and I think I can buy it on eBay for £££ Confused

Will definitely check out your suggestions though, thank you! I will admit I've never smelled a celebrity scent!

SerenDippitee · 31/08/2016 10:28

yes, Storm, yours will have been a single product - but also available at the same time was a second product, a solid perfume called Stella in Two Amber. I think most people wore them separately, as you did, but the idea / gimmick was that you could if you wished wear them together to recreate the effect of the original Stella scent, but a little heavier on the amber base notes or lighter on the peony top notes as you preferred. That's why it was called Stella in Two - the Stella scent in two products.

I remember really clearly trying my friend's one and marvelling at the chutzpah of the company who were trying to sell two products to recreate the effect of one existing product!

Therefore, you should theoretically find that the top notes of Stella, which is still available, should be pretty familiar from your In Two Peony. The dry down will be different, however.

MissBattleaxe · 31/08/2016 10:30

SheStoodInaStorm- if you like peonies, I would recommend Escada Delicate Notes. It's light as air and the peonies are so pretty.

Thanks so much Seren! You learn something new everyday!

Thanks Miss - I will check it out Smile

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 31/08/2016 14:25

lasttimearound try the Lynx. Honestly total revelation: not Africa in any way! I rarely used to wear perfume, even less buy as I kept complaining I couldn't find anything I liked. This thread has opened my eyes!
Fresta I am heading the same way! Only 17 bottles but have 4 more in a basket on missbattleaxe's recommendation on allbeauty.com!

SerenDippitee · 31/08/2016 14:27

It's a pleasure - it's nice to know that otherwise useless trivia from the mid 2000s can be genuinely useful at times!
