Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

Thanks lastgirl. He should be ok but a year of steroid treatment ahead I think and a world turned upside down for school and work and DD.
May see if one of the sample folk would deliver to a hospital ward! I think my sense of smell will live through others for a week at least!

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 14/08/2016 08:42

i hope your Ds is on the mend soon another

too early for a sotd yet but whatever i'd got on my pjs last night smelled AMAZING! i'm a known sleepwalker so i most likely applied somethign then but i don't know what out of my many many different perfumes. i must do some sniff testing to locate the source!

BaronessBomburst · 14/08/2016 11:48

Sorry to hear about your DS PinkiePie.

So, what with it being a lazy Saturday, my sample set arrived before I'd showered, and having seen your post lasttimeround I started with Une Rose Chyprée.

It's exquisite. Really, really like nothing else I've smelled. I see immediately what's so different about Tauer, and why people are excited by his scents. I loved it - and this was one I was expecting to be a bit meh about.

The first spray is so rich. Gorgeous deep oily lemon with rose, and bay, and cinnamon all at once.
Then it settled to bay and lemon and moss but everytime I thought that was it, I caught a whiff of rose.
Then it turned more incensy, but still with rose every time I moved, or DS breathed on me. Which was a lot, as he kept leaning in to sniff my neck. Grin
I'm not 100% sure this is me because of the middle mossy, bay bit, but on the other hand, if I was given a bottle I'd wear it gladly.
It reminds me of really good quality, expensive pot pourri. Only not quite that either. Better.

I'm going to shower and then try Lonesome Rider for a day's gardening. I think I won't like this one, but now I'm curious.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 14/08/2016 13:23

that sounds really good baroness i really would like to try them when funds are a bit more allowing,t hey are on my list!

still havent found what i want to wear today nor have i identified what i was splashing around in the night. it's going to drive me potty until i find out what it is

ggirl · 14/08/2016 14:18

baroness that sounds gorgeous

sotd is a trip down memory lane - Anais Anais ...i think i love it more that I did when I wore it in the 80's ..floral,powdery,musky ..perfect for today..pottering around

needastrongone · 14/08/2016 14:20

Wonder if you have room for a little one? Smile

I am useless with describing perfume, but I shall try hard to pick this up. It will actually be interesting to do so.

SOTD is Michael Kors Rose Radiant Gold. I bought in in Duty Free, as a pack of 2 with Sexy Amber. It's very average and lasts about 5 minutes.

So, on the way home I also bought Tom Ford White Patchouli. I am trying and failing to wean myself off TF. And failing. Lovely. Citrus and Lemony. Lasts ages.

I have also ordered some Shalimar from Ebay for £20, thanks to lurking here this last week. Smile

ggirl · 14/08/2016 14:29

needastrongone I am really keen to try a TF ..not sure where they stock near me but the white patchouli is one I have my eye/nose on.

I find it so overwhelming testing scents in dept stores , they all mingle into one after about 5 minutes and I can't decide so end up walking away with about 5 areas of my body with different scents and I get them all mixed up..hopeless!!

cressetmama · 14/08/2016 14:59

Adding my best wishes for a quick recovery for Pinkie's DS, and hoping that you've found something fragrantly cheering for hospital life.

My hat is off to you, Baroness. Great descriptive and olfactory observation powers! Now, I really want to sniff Une Rose Chypree (which I expect to love) and to hear what you thought of Lonesome Rider. I have a small sample used just once, and liked it but thought it smelled much more floral on the cotton wool than on my skin. No scent yet today, as I can't think what I fancy. August is never an easy scent month for me because I don't care for vanilla and coconut, so tend to resort to citrus things, and they don't last well on my skin. It will probably be Elixir des Merveilles, for the heady amber notes.

FrustratedFrugal · 14/08/2016 18:56

Baroness I loved your description. Tauer is one of the reasons why I became a perfumista. All my life I have waited for something like what he creates...

I've really enjoyed Bottega Veneta Edp today. I usually find it is too much, chokingly leathery and too sweet, but with 1/3 of a spray (and even that tissued away) I get a tantalizing hint of suede that keeps me guessing. I'm in the far North and can sense the seasons changing. Leather perfumes are just right when there is a slight chill in the air.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 14/08/2016 22:19

Pinkie, he will be just fine!!!! It is horrible when our children are ill, isn't it? In so many ways it just is hateful!!

I'm so sorry for my wanton drunkenness by the way!!! BlushBlush DH and I were celebrating.

Anyway, back to business. SOTD was Givenchy Very Irresistible. Too young for me I think, but it is a bottle I have had now for 9/10 years I think, so trying to use it up. It smells gloriously youthful!!! Aaahhhh......those were the days!!!!

BaronessBomburst · 15/08/2016 10:31

I can assure you my olifactiry skills are nothing special! I read up in everything first, and it's easy to pick out familiar scents when you know they're in there. I still wouldn't recognise a gardenia. Grin

BaronessBomburst · 15/08/2016 10:45

So, Lonesome Rider:
Tobacco. The red oval cigar tin my mum kept the curtain hooks in when I was a child. Then a blast of floral, which must be the iris Andy talks about in his blog. There's leather.
Then it goes dirty.
Grown up, sophisticated, dirty. It's the vodka swilling housewife from Encino in Roger Water's Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking.
Then it cleans its act up and smells fresher with a hint of citrus, but still leathery and smokey.
It's not me. I didn't like it. But I didn't wash it off either and I know I'm going to try it again.

DS hated the tobacco, and DH didn't smell it until I'd had it on a few hours. He said it was clean, like a nice shower gel, and might try it himself.

Today will be l'Air du Desert Marocain.

cressetmama · 15/08/2016 13:07

I look forward to reading all about it Baroness.

I quite liked Lonesome Rider, and it is very complex as it changes on the skin; strangely, the little piece of cotton wool I'd tucked into my bra with it on smelled very different to the wafts coming off my wrist at the end of the day. It was all soft florals, barely a trace of the leather.

needastrongone · 15/08/2016 19:56

ggirl, that's how I feel after I have tested more than 4/5 scents. Overwhelmed! Shame Duty Free is pretty much the only place I get the experience. My very first TF, Azure Lime is still my absolute favourite. DH bought it for me from Dubai airport when on business and only realised how much it was when he calculated the exchange rate afterwards. It's one of the 'Private Blends'. It's slightly fresher than the others I have.

SOTD was Davidoff Cool Water Wave. Light and summery and superbly long lasting for the cost.

lasttimeround · 15/08/2016 21:07

That sounds lovely baroness the rose chypree I mean. I'm going to have to go for some samples soon. I've spent the day gardening an am all excited about jasmin and honeysuckle in the garden next year. That's if the buggers flower. I've had huge amounts of sweet peas this year and flowers all over the house. I'm not much for housekeeping but flowers out of the garden is my version of feeling like a domestic goddess. Even if sweet peas are a little, well, sweet.
SOTD is crabtree and evelyns Hungary Water. It's a lovely old fashioned herby cologne. Bit kolnish wasser but better. Hot today it won't fit once the weather changes so I'm making the most of it.

lasttimeround · 15/08/2016 21:10

Pinkee - hope your son is better

BaronessBomburst · 16/08/2016 13:12

So, the excitement continues!
L'Air du Desert Marocain:
Oooooh! I LOVE this one! My favourite yet. :)
First spray was wood smoke (I though ash as that's my favourite for the fireplace, but it's actually cedar) with roasted cumin and hints of bitter orange. That confused me as when I looked there's no bitter orange mentioned, then I googled petitgrain. Blush
It softened to a voluptuous, round, soft, sweet, golden floral. I couldn't pick out any particular scent but it reminds me so much of something I already know. Something by Givenchy? Something my mum used to wear? Something I love.
The scent just envelopes you. I sat behind DH in the car and he said he could smell me and he loved it.
The dry down on my skin was smokey, slightly spicy, warm (vanilla? honey?), slightly floral, but for all, cedar. I loved it. I love the smell of fresh cut wood.
I also sprayed it in my hair which wasn't woody at all. Just warm and sweet.
I could wear this everyday, except..... I've just read that it's a lighter version of Maroc pour Elle.
I'm now desperate to try the full fat version!

Today will be Une Rose de Kandahar.

Oh, and don't ever google ambergris. You have been warned.

needastrongone · 17/08/2016 15:21

Sounds delightful Baroness, I love your description. Sounds like my kind of ingredients.

Yesterdays SOTD was Michael Kors. This lasts for such a pathetically and dreadfully short period, I am wondering what other use I can make of the 2 bottles I have?

Today has been Tom Ford Black Orchid. It's very warm and spicy and I think smells 'citrusy' on me, but not light and citrus as per Cool Water, more intense, because of the other ingredients. It's very long lasting and strong, my colleagues could smell it at work, note to self to apply less liberally next time.

Today my Shalimar bargain arrived, so that will be tomorrows SOTD sorted, as I won't be able to resist.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 17/08/2016 15:37

has anyone ehard from missbattleaxe? i havent seen her ont he boards and i'm just wondering if she's okay? i sent her a parcel but i have no idea if it arrived. hope she's okay

lasttimeround · 17/08/2016 19:16

Love your descriptionsearch baroness at this rate you'll have persuaded me to take a punt on the tauer rather than splashing out on the apres l'ondee I've been planning for

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 17/08/2016 21:32

I have read so many positive and wonderful reviews about Black Orchid, that I wonder where it all went wrong on me!!! My friend bought the cheapo version from Next or somewhere and it smelled so luxuriant and decadently evil on her...yet when I wore he real thing I Hated it!!!! Plus I had bees and wasps around me when I was gardening the whole time I wore it!!!

SOTD was Donna!!! Fresh, clean and subtle. Just perfect for a warm, muggy, summer day!

BaronessBomburst · 18/08/2016 00:24

I don't think anyone's going to switch to Tauer based on my review of Phi, Une Rose du Kandahar.

Now, I like roses. I love them! I have a couple of rose bushes in the garden. The scented ones are so much more work, so fragile, and prone to disease and black spot but the smell is just wonderful. They're worth the work. I was excited by the idea of a rare and precious oil extracted from an Afghan rose. I wanted to smell the flower! This was going to be even more lovely and rosy than body sprays from Boots or the Bodyshop, yes?

No. The first spray was medicinal.
DH was in the room and said "That smells Catholic. Like church when I was a kid."
He was right. It was all there. The damp, the faded incense, the dusty books, and the faint smell of disinfectant leaking through from the toilets. It was horrid. Especially the medicinal/ disinfectant notes which must have come from the cinnamon
It did settle down and I spent the afternoon smelling like old my elderly relatives did in the 1970s.
You know when a pub tarts up the toilets with air freshener and dusty fake flowers? That.
And yet the weird thing, the smell left on my skin by the late evening was gorgeous. Soft, sweet, musky vanilla. I kept sniffing my arms.
I'm just not prepared to go through the whole day to get there!

Tomorrow will be the last one: Incense Rose.

cressetmama · 18/08/2016 20:59

I think everyone, except the Baroness, is on holiday. Have hardly communicated on here, and haven't worn scent most days as I seem to have been flat out (mostly keeping up with traffic on another MN thread that has me grabbed, TBH).

Baroness is doing sterling work keeping me interested.

I am gagging for your take on Incense rose, having not smelled it. Nor Rose du Kandahar. Nor Rose Chypree (which is the one I fancy, unsmelled). Air du Desert Marocain was just, just faintly sweeter than I wanted, but hey.... it was a long time ago, and I would willingly try it again. I will get a tester set, perhaps next.

user1471443882 · 18/08/2016 23:04

Longtime lurker (and lover of the perfume threads) (and forced joiner as of yesterday so daring to join in)

I've realised that I am never. ever going to get my beloved Opium, worn '77 launch through 90s back again and as my skin eats perfume it has been difficult to find a replacement (I actually don't think anything can replace it, but I'm trying.) The closest thing I love ( in terms of atmosphere and that lasts) I've found is SL Ambre Sultan but I miss the carnation note and am wondering what everyone likes before thinking about (possibly) Caron Bellodgia or Tabac Blond....?

In terms of the spice sillage monsters I can't seem to source Cartier Baiser du Dragon and am unsure about Kenzo Jungle L'Elephant...I've just got confused with the reviews, I think, and am in the sticks so can't easily try.

Am also interested in some of the spicier 4160 Tuesdays if anyone has an opinion...oddly, I can wear Paul Smith Rose so am not averse tot eh odd flower here or there

Thanks is advance for suggestions
