How 'edgy' a pixie cut can I get away with?

Honest opinions, please, suitable for RL Grin

I am 50.
Have mid-brown (hennaed) hair.
Some wave/frizz Hmm
I live and work in semi-rural suburbia.

I have finally come off the fence made an appointment to have my mid-back length hair cut to a pixie - the change in length does not particularly phase me, I've done it several times in my lifetime. It's only hair Grin

Here's my question: I quite fancy something really very short sides and back (maybe a gentle bit of undercut?) with a longer top. Am quite happy to be a bit edgy but not ludicrously so. I wear no make-up day to day, I have no facial piercings and no tattoos and work in a job in which I really don't want to scare the horses. Or the neighbours.
So all the many lovely mohican pixies I have wasted hours and hours on looked at online are really not an option.

So, am I having some kind of hair related mid-life crisis? Am I nuts?
Should i just embrace my inner Deirdre and settle for Middle-Aged Hair??

Help!

Oh FFS, now you are not only enabling me to go ever shorter with my haircut ambitions, but you are also undermining the Healthy Eating Plan here!!

Grin

I know in my heart of heart that a long pixie is going to drive me nuts, but I figure it's easier to cut more off than to glue some back on Wink

Just out of interest, how often do you have your hair cut, Rufus?

And btw I know somebody who looks so much like you she could be your sister, I swear! I've always liked her hair cut too Grin

I got my hair done v like your second photo not long ago, though mine is a bit choppier and less 'neat'. I bloody love it and cannot understand why I didn't get it all chopped off years ago. Go for it. Or the first one, if you are prepared to spend time actually styling the bugger.

Teal - I am not delicate. I look almost pretty with a short cut, if it's done well. As soon as it's more than a couple of inches long, I just look old and tired. Proper long hair makes me look witchy, not helped by having very thick, pubehead wavy hair.

TealLove · 17/06/2016 02:13

Stick I'm sure you look more than pretty!

MyCatWasRightAboutYou · 17/06/2016 02:46

Haven't RTFT, but getting a pixie cut was one of the best choices I've made! I used to have long hair and get those A-line bobs because it seems that's the only haircut you're allowed if you're fat you have a "rounder face". I was getting sick of it, so I went to a lovely hairdresser and asked her to cut the lot off. It takes hardly any time to wash and dry now. I get compliments much more than I did with longer hair. :)

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 17/06/2016 02:48

Undercut with quiff, bit of a shitty photo but you get the gist, I fucking love this haircut, I've grown out the dye and basically have the same cut but nearly all white now (this was at Halloween), it gets SO many compliments

Sorry if I missed anything g important, I skipped to the end of the post. I have undercut with almost chin length top. Does my head in so would recommend short short pixie.

Biggest tip is to let the hairdresser in on your vague plans and get their opinion on what would suit your hair type and face shape. It's their job to know what suits and what doesn't & you'll always end up with a better cut

HoneyDragon · 17/06/2016 08:29

Hound I quiff mine up like that when I go out .... I love yours though as you've got the sides bang on.

zippyswife · 17/06/2016 10:32

Hound I love that! You have the face to pull it off.

Stick your hair type sounds like mine. How short is yours? What kind of cut do you have?

RufusTheReindeer · 17/06/2016 10:35

pacific

4-6 weeks for hair cut

I usually go every 4 weeks as the hairdresser comes to my house and only charges me a tenner...i love her!!!!

I like my hair at about 2-4 weeks, it does go very short at the start, the photo is probably at 2 weeks

millicentfriendly · 17/06/2016 10:49

Here's the rule which apparently helps you decide if very short hair will suit you.

"If you’ve never had short hair, you might wonder whether short hair would look good on you. Here’s an easy way to figure it out: the 2.25 inch rule.According to Elle, this measurement was discovered by hair expert John Frieda, who studied faces and found that the angle of the jawbone determines if someone would look better with short or long hair.
To take the test, hold a pencil horizontally under your chin and a ruler under your ear vertically. Measure the distance from your ear to the pencil. If it’s less than 2.25 inches, short hair should look great on you. Over 2.25 inches, a longer cut might be more flattering.

Face shape plays into this too and the type of hairstyle that would be most flattering, but the ruler test is a quick and easy way to stop wondering about short locks."

Oooooooooooh. I love that it's lovely. You can play with that loads. God your hair is so shiney Envy

PacificDogwod · 17/06/2016 12:42

Henna, me dear, henna
Actually it needs to be done again, horrible badger stripe when wet and combed.

I do know that it will never look as styled ever again, so have lots of product at the ready to make it look all tousled and messy. That is more 'me' anyway.

Right. Eyebrows next….

That looks great 😍!
You had a lot of hair before!
Really lovely.

HoneyDragon · 17/06/2016 12:49

Sea salt spray would be grand with that do. I think you'll be surprised at how much easier getting it sleek will be too.

PacificDogwod · 17/06/2016 12:54

Oh, I've got seasalt spray and wax stuff and bedhead stuff and can always nick DH's gel Grin

One of the challenges today was actually that she had to point out to me that I had a really thinning hairline around the front, with lots of new hair growth Shock. I had not noticed anything amiss. It totally looked like it did when I lost masses of hair postnatally.
Because of that my sides are not as short/sharp as I would have liked, because we both agreed that maybe a mohican was NOT the way to go and she would've had to shave it all off to make that work Grin
