How 'edgy' a pixie cut can I get away with?

PacificDogwod · 15/06/2016 21:06

Honest opinions, please, suitable for RL Grin

I am 50.
Have mid-brown (hennaed) hair.
Some wave/frizz Hmm
I live and work in semi-rural suburbia.

I have finally come off the fence made an appointment to have my mid-back length hair cut to a pixie - the change in length does not particularly phase me, I've done it several times in my lifetime. It's only hair Grin

Here's my question: I quite fancy something really very short sides and back (maybe a gentle bit of undercut?) with a longer top. Am quite happy to be a bit edgy but not ludicrously so. I wear no make-up day to day, I have no facial piercings and no tattoos and work in a job in which I really don't want to scare the horses. Or the neighbours.
So all the many lovely mohican pixies I have wasted hours and hours on looked at online are really not an option.

So, am I having some kind of hair related mid-life crisis? Am I nuts?
Should i just embrace my inner Deirdre and settle for Middle-Aged Hair??

Help!

3 stone? Well done, Im not jealous at all.
I cut my hair and dyed it silver, from dark and DH didn't notice for 3 days.
You look a bit like me when I had dark hair.

PacificDogwod · 17/06/2016 13:26

Coco, my first ever 'serious' boyfriend (like, we had sex Shock - I know!!) had a moustache (again Shock - I know!) and when he shaved it off, I did not notice for 3 days…. My powers of observation leave to be desired and I know that.

DH won't be able to reply. He does have a job to do. But still….

Spd dh's opinion. The consensus here is that we love it. That's all that matters!

Just picked DS2(12) up from a 5 day residential outward bound thing - he think I 'look like a mushroom'. He hates it. He mainly hates any change though, or any suggestion that his mother is also a person, you know, with a warm beating heart and a life apart from being his maternal parent Grin
The other mums said nice things though.

I still like it Grin

My dc hate when I change my hair.

My dh only noticed new tattoos Hmm

Cocolepew · 17/06/2016 17:17

I have a picture on my Pinterest board which is called a mushroom cut and its lovely .

PacificDogwod · 17/06/2016 17:38

DS1(13) likes it.
Or at least he is mature enough to say all the right things, the rest hate it. Ignorami, the lot of them.
I agree re children disliking change. Mine would like Everything To Stay The Same Forever.

I am quite happy to embrace my inner mushroom - I could start a Beatles tribute band: The Shroomies Grin

When I had my hair chopped DCs (7 and 9yo at the time) said "Don't worry Mummy, we still love you." Grin

Ambroxide · 17/06/2016 20:38

That looks great!

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 17/06/2016 20:47

it's fab! Not even a hint of the Wolowitzes! ;)

What did you do with the left overs...you'd have enough for a jumper!

PacificDogwod · 17/06/2016 21:10

Thank you.

Hairdresser said she would stuff a cushion with it - I think she was joking Wink

If I am brave enough I'll post a photo of what it looks like when I have to do it myself…. Hmm

Looks gorgeous OP! I want a(nother) hair cut now!

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 17/06/2016 21:37

Stick your hair type sounds like mine. How short is yours? What kind of cut do you have?

I've had it very short, in the past, but I was over a stone lighter, younger and less jowly back then. I'm slowly growing it into more of a wedge, a bit like the blond pic I posted all the way up the thread. I actually did have it more like the other pic, but then I had to try a new stylist who said, after I asked her to keep the length on top and maintain the wedge, oh, it's got so heavy! and promptly cut it all off. I'm getting back where i want to be, though. It's fairly rough cut and textured on top, but the longest bits are about index finger length, even though they don't look it because of its natural wave.

I keep it very short and tight at the back and sides. The stylist I'm seeing now has a penchant for wispy bits but doesn't appreciate that I'm quite outdoorsy and hate faffing, so they inevitably end up all curled up and sticking out like duck tails and koala ears as soon as I go out in the fog which seems to envelop our village for 9 months of the year. I keep him right with the pictures, though!

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 17/06/2016 21:42

That is a lot of hair off, Pacific! Looking great.

Remember you need sun block on your neck, now ;) (it's always my ears that get caught.)

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 17/06/2016 21:45

I have one about their age, Pacific and he objects strongly to how long I've had my hair, lately. He actually liked the horrible cut that made me cry.

PacificDogwod · 17/06/2016 21:51

Remember you need sun block on your neck, now

I was thinking that today when I was walking the mutt!

I want mine shorter, but the whole thinning hairline thing along the side of my face Shock was a bit of an unexpected and unwelcome surprise. How I had not noticed, I don't really know Hmm
See upthread re my lack of powers of observation.
Or I just don't care that much what I look like Grin

And I know about the outdoorsy and not-faffing aspects of haircare - thankfully, my hairdresser gets me. She's fab - I hope she never leaves!

I have a pixie cut - I recommend L'oreal Texture dust for styling - it really does give texture and body.

Cocolepew · 17/06/2016 22:52

My hair falls out due to an auto immune disease and I have skimpy/baby hair on one side at my hairline. I just brush my fringe over it, though tbf nobody ever notices it.

I could have lent you a bag when you were walking the dog, if you'd given me a shout.

dailymaillazyjournos · 19/06/2016 22:24

I love your new 'do'. It looks chic and young. It's a bit similar to what I have (mine is shorter). I dry it with the dryer and round brush to give it body (it v v thin and fine) and then when it's nearly dry, I wuzz it up with my fingers to mess it up. Then use gel/cream to get more body in and then spray. It sounds a right pallaver but because it's fine and so short it doesn't take more than 10 mins tops to get it looking how i like it. I also wish I'd got it cut short years ago. It looks so much thicker and healthier and cuter this way.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 20/06/2016 03:01

Love it!

Now go shorter!, It looks great, take it all the way, I've had a buzz-cut and all sorts, blunt fringes, long and flowing, I loved them all, but the haircut I get THE most compliments from is when I take it quite short and get an undercut.

I do like it, but I think you need to be bolder, own that short hair!

Go short, just watch the top of your ears in the sun...

RufusTheReindeer · 20/06/2016 08:55

Its looks great Grin

Very brave of you!!!

MadSprocker · 20/06/2016 09:00

I change my cut/colour every year, and my school and DH have to put up with it. Growing out my pixie and going peroxide blonde today.

You look great op.
