How 'edgy' a pixie cut can I get away with?

Honest opinions, please, suitable for RL Grin

I am 50.
Have mid-brown (hennaed) hair.
Some wave/frizz Hmm
I live and work in semi-rural suburbia.

I have finally come off the fence made an appointment to have my mid-back length hair cut to a pixie - the change in length does not particularly phase me, I've done it several times in my lifetime. It's only hair Grin

Here's my question: I quite fancy something really very short sides and back (maybe a gentle bit of undercut?) with a longer top. Am quite happy to be a bit edgy but not ludicrously so. I wear no make-up day to day, I have no facial piercings and no tattoos and work in a job in which I really don't want to scare the horses. Or the neighbours.
So all the many lovely mohican pixies I have wasted hours and hours on looked at online are really not an option.

So, am I having some kind of hair related mid-life crisis? Am I nuts?
Should i just embrace my inner Deirdre and settle for Middle-Aged Hair??

Help!

I wanted it shorter!! I did, I did, honest.
Hairdresser advised against it as my hair had really thinned at my temples/over my ears - unbeknownst to me ShockHmm

Thank you all.
I am aiming for shorter/sharper/undercut going forward Grin

Now peroxide blonde - there's something I've never done….
How did it go today, MadSproker?

You'll definitely go shorter, everyone does
I need to bleach my hair atm but can't be bothered. Must be old age.

PacificDogwod · 20/06/2016 21:54

I have never been blonde - not even as a toddler.
Have had highlights aka 'stripy hair' - not really keen to back there again.

Right now am neglected henna brown with a hint of chestnut.
Might just go pillar box red if I feel more midlife crisis coming on brave.

It's my second foray into peroxide. I went back to the dark side in October, but really missed it, even the upkeep. I have naturally mousy hair, which is a good basis for changing colour. Because I had previous highlights, some ends went a bit yellow, so currently toning.
I'll bravely put photos up.

Go for the red, you can always re dye it if you hate it!

fruitscone · 21/06/2016 12:00

Madsprocker - I am not a fan of peroxide hair ... or so I thought ... but I think your hair is fabulous like that.

OP - really like your haircut. I would love to return to the pixie I had 15 years ago but worried my chops are now too fat. Plus I can't find a decent hairdresser in the arse of nowhere that I live.

witsender · 21/06/2016 12:03

My clippers arrived yesterday.

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Cocolepew · 21/06/2016 16:09

Do you have any hair left wits?

Sallystyle · 21/06/2016 20:44

FSS I was going to grow out my pixie.

But these pictures are making me change my mind. I suit short hair, I like a bit of an edgy cut. I have a very short side and one side a bit longer with a slight undercut and I can do a lot of things with it.

I decided to grow it out because I've had short hair for ages and fancied a change. I think I'm changing my mind Grin

I do not have delicate features, but it still really suits me.

Dowser · 21/06/2016 21:04

Oh dogwood
I going to go right against the grain here

I'm mourning your beautiful mane of thick ,dark lustrous hair.

It was just beautiful.

I would not have let you do it...( stern voice mode)

Sob! It was just gorgeous.

What I could have done with it.

You looked like an advert for loreal

MadSprocker · 21/06/2016 21:05

Ummm, I am growing mine out, it is just taking agggggges. I am hoping the blonde will help me through the shitty stage.

I am hoping it will look a bit like Jane Horrocks current do.

Dowser, sorry to have hurt your feelings
I can always grow it again.
I've gone from Very Long to Very Short (shorter than this time) several times in my life.

The last time I cut it Very short was 6 years ago when DS4 was 3 months old and it was a matter of either a. putting the poor mite up for adoption or b. cutting my hair. As we had grown quite fond of him, I cut my hair Grin
No regrets so far…

I washed it this morning, put some of the Tigi Behead curl stuff in and left it. I look a bit wild - suits me, I think Grin

Oh, and I love the peroxide blond look on others. I simply find I cannot identify with being blond. Does not 'sit' right. For me. Weird.

And the lustrousness?? Pah - all henna because much as I am not troubled by my 7 signs of ageing, I hate my greys. FFS my mother is 75 and has not a single grey hair!! It's not fair

Just a little. Grin DH was a bit Hmm when he spotted me happily clipping away. Am still planning on going to the hair dressers, but am hoping to only need to go every couple of months instead of every month, and stretch out each cut with a clip!

I like your hair Pacific, it's funky. And embrace the grey, I am super grey now at 35 (thanks dad, he was grey by 20) and it actually looks a wee bit cool as long as I keep my hair short and sharp.

PacificDogwod · 21/06/2016 22:29

wits, I would embrace the grey if there was enough to actually make me look grey IYKWIM.
I grew it out a bit a couple of years ago and it just looked washed out. It's crap.
I'll wait until there is more grey and then buy some clippers Grin
And a bucket of peroxide…

There was a boy in my year group in school who was grey at 16. We all fancied him like crazy. He was very handsome and the grey just made him look terribly romantic
He shagged around a lot (sadly not me), then became a born again Christian and turned a bit fanatical religious which made him much much less attractive Grin

Damn it!!! I might might might cut all my damn hair off!! I have no idea what Im trying to acheive except you all look so very gorgeous ...

DoingTheSwanThing · 22/06/2016 08:50

I also prefer the second one - looks fab!
I'd love something like that but my hair is intrinsically mushroomy. Even at shoulder length has a tendency to explode Blush

doctorboo · 22/06/2016 10:26

Pacfic you look great, when you go shorter I'd love to see another pic. I've been contemplating henna but do love my greys.

mabel01 · 03/11/2016 20:59

Pixie cuts can sometimes look a bit frumpy on older women so I think its better to be edgy than play it safe

Totally agree with @Ouriana. In fact, recently I changed my hairstyle from Pixie to short layered cut. (see the no 16th style for women over 50)

I really think I am looking better than before. Good luck Smile

PickAChew · 03/11/2016 21:02

mabel, Pacific's hair has probably had another cut or three since she started this thread :o

mabel01 · 03/11/2016 21:11

@PickAChew, oops...my bad Shock now I realized that I replied to an very old thread.

PacificDogwod · 03/11/2016 21:14
Grin

Just popped up on my Actives

Yes, I've gone shorter.
And am actively encouraging my curls.
I look like Shaun the Sheep and am loving it Grin

PickAChew · 03/11/2016 21:18

Don't worry, we've all done it :D

(Haven't we? Just me, then?)

autisticrat · 03/11/2016 21:25

I have this, and use clay rather than wax or gel. I love having short hair, because it takes no time to wash, doesn't need conditioner, doesn't need combing, doesn't pull on my roots or tickle my face, and takes 30 seconds to "style" in the morning.

mabel01 · 03/11/2016 21:25

Well, definitely not just you Smile. Thanks and have a great time!
