How 'edgy' a pixie cut can I get away with?

Honest opinions, please, suitable for RL Grin

I am 50.
Have mid-brown (hennaed) hair.
Some wave/frizz Hmm
I live and work in semi-rural suburbia.

I have finally come off the fence made an appointment to have my mid-back length hair cut to a pixie - the change in length does not particularly phase me, I've done it several times in my lifetime. It's only hair Grin

Here's my question: I quite fancy something really very short sides and back (maybe a gentle bit of undercut?) with a longer top. Am quite happy to be a bit edgy but not ludicrously so. I wear no make-up day to day, I have no facial piercings and no tattoos and work in a job in which I really don't want to scare the horses. Or the neighbours.
So all the many lovely mohican pixies I have wasted hours and hours on looked at online are really not an option.

So, am I having some kind of hair related mid-life crisis? Am I nuts?
Should i just embrace my inner Deirdre and settle for Middle-Aged Hair??

Help!

Im a bit gung ho Blush
I use clippers up the back first, start with a high number for the first time, a 9 or 10 at least, then you can go down easier rather than shaving it all off in one go.

I hold the top part out of the way, it depends on how far up you want your sides to go on how much you hold up.
I shave the sides, again use a high number clipper.
If the top has long layers, I sometimes hold bits up and use the clippers to trim them off or cut into it with hairdressing scissors.
Sorry its not very clear, its hard to explain. But always err on the longer side and then go down gradually to get the length you want.

Cocolepew · 16/06/2016 09:49

This is with the sides shaved short

This is left longer (and my natural colour Shock)

LadyAntonella · 16/06/2016 10:07

at what do you expect to achieve with your haircut? Sorry Apple, no offence it just tickled me. What can one achieve with a haircut? Cure cancer? MBE? Sorry... again... I'm really not trying to be mean it was just a funny turn of phrase you used.

On the OP, don't settle for boring hair! I'm a bit like you when I get my hair cut. I figure it can always be grown out so no big deal having it chopped off. I wouldn't suit a pixie personally though too chubs atm. Go as edgy as you like. Smile

witsender · 16/06/2016 10:13

Well, I'm hoping to become a pixie...obviously? What else would one aim to achieve with a pixie cut?

Thanks Coco, I have had a little play at the back with DH's beard trimmer Blush but will get some proper ones.

niminypiminy · 16/06/2016 10:18

Cocolepew that is awesome!

I have a short pixie bleached white - am 54 - and love my cropped hair. I've had it grey and like that but the bleached white (sometimes toned silver) look is great too. It's very energizing I think to have bold hair.

Sadly I'm not bold enough to do it all myself, so the upkeep is expensive. But it's the only thing I splash out on.

HyacinthBouquetNo1 · 16/06/2016 10:24

I have had a pixie cut for years, since I was late 30s, I am now 46. I just CBA with long hair, it looks nice when done but its a pain for everyday and I find it really annoying, getting in my eyes, sticking to lipstick on a windy day!

My hair is like Halle Berry when she has the very short spiked up style. unfortunately my face doesn't look like hers I am very overdue a cut and it is driving me bonkers at the moment, its very outgrown and feels thick, cannot wait to get it done for my holiday. I am going to dye it myself before I go, I cannot afford the dye and cut where I go, its a very expensive salon, so just have the cut.

I love my hair short, I just wet it in the morning, bit of product on to spike it up, and I am readyGrin

averythinline · 16/06/2016 10:36

I chopped my hair short - aiming for jed'ish , my hairdresser was having a hard enough time chopping it ....but have had loads of good feedback but the one thing was next time it'll be shorter....she went slighly softer round the ears/back and and I went with it - due feeling am much older/more knackered now than last time had v short hair- but was a mistake in hindsight ... I have thick hair with slight wave so have to be careful of mushroom head......its really easy to look after..i need low maintenance..

so do it! but go for it I regret not going shorter/sharper....

PrimalLass · 16/06/2016 10:51

TBH I think your first one is a 'lady in her 50s being a bit wacky' haircut. I'd go shorter - the second one is better.

Beard trimmer ShockGrin
Thanks niminy

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/06/2016 13:33

Your hair looks great Cocole, and what a gorgeous colour! People pay top dollar for that.

And I must say your skin is amazing, not a hint of a wrinkle! Grin

allegretto · 16/06/2016 13:36

Love these haircuts , I'm having mine cut next week but i have very little hair especially at the front so not sure what would be best - does a pixie cut make sparse hair look worse? Anyone tried it?

thisishardwork · 16/06/2016 13:41

I think short hair can be good if hair is fine. However, as much as I like my hair short I find it expensive to maintain as need more trips to hairdresser to keep it tidy. Therefore, due to cost, am growing it!

blueskyinmarch · 16/06/2016 13:41

I really hanker after a pixie cut like the ones I have seen on this thread but I am too scared to go for it. I have a short bob. Do you think I could go shorter and more layered. Have attached a pic of my hair after the last cut.

Also i am mid 50's and a bit on the plump side with glasses!

Cocolepew · 16/06/2016 13:52

Thanks Mitzy. I find a glasd of water a day very good for the complexion Grin.
Allegretto my mum has very short hair and hers is very fine, it looks, great.

Cocolepew · 16/06/2016 13:56

What about something like these bluesky? PersonalIy I prefer hair cut over the ears.
Im also plump and wear glasses Smile

Really good thread! I've had a pixie type cut for the last few months - new hairdresser, new look. Have a longer piece on one side (disjoin?) but have found the floppy fringe difficult to manage. Just had it cut again this morning and she has cut some more layers in the front making it more like Cocole's third image at 13:56. I hate the bottom of the back of it, cut far too short with a pointy v centre back - ugh! Thinking of cutting that off!!

Cocolepew · 16/06/2016 14:45

I like that second image I posted, I might grow that in over the summer.

slinkysaluki · 16/06/2016 14:59

I've been contemplating going short for months but haven't plucked up the courage yet. I have very thick coarse hair currently a couple of inches below chin length in an a line Bob but I'm so over it, I've had the same style for about 6 years. Looks nice when washed and straightened which I tend to do on nights out mainly because it's a faff. Also when it's hot it gets very sweaty. I'm trying to lose a bit of weight as I have a bit of a double chin going on then I might go for it. Have a look on Pinterest there's loads of pics on there, I have a board it's called pixiehot it's all short styles.

dailymaillazyjournos · 16/06/2016 16:27

Prefer the second pic. I'm 55 and have a messy long pixie cut. I think anything undercut, shaved or asymmetrical looks try too hard and a bit of a mid-life attempt at being edgy and on trend. It very rarely has the desired effect tho imo.

PacificDogwod · 16/06/2016 16:29

I fecking hope I will NOT turn in to a Pixie - I don't think I'd make a good one… Grin

I love how you've all been talking amongst each other. Grin

And Coco's clipper instructions made me come over all peculiar Shock - I think I'd be more likely to dare to put all my hair in an asymmetrical pony tail and chop it all off with scissors than attempt the back/sides clippering!
You are a brave woman, Coco!

PrimalLass, I've got that one on my board as well - I think that was the one I started out with (as Honeydragon has so helpfully pointed out I have been contemplating this move for some time...
