How 'edgy' a pixie cut can I get away with?

Honest opinions, please, suitable for RL Grin

I am 50.
Have mid-brown (hennaed) hair.
Some wave/frizz Hmm
I live and work in semi-rural suburbia.

I have finally come off the fence made an appointment to have my mid-back length hair cut to a pixie - the change in length does not particularly phase me, I've done it several times in my lifetime. It's only hair Grin

Here's my question: I quite fancy something really very short sides and back (maybe a gentle bit of undercut?) with a longer top. Am quite happy to be a bit edgy but not ludicrously so. I wear no make-up day to day, I have no facial piercings and no tattoos and work in a job in which I really don't want to scare the horses. Or the neighbours.
So all the many lovely mohican pixies I have wasted hours and hours on looked at online are really not an option.

So, am I having some kind of hair related mid-life crisis? Am I nuts?
Should i just embrace my inner Deirdre and settle for Middle-Aged Hair??

Help!

I can post my last few pixies if you want. As long as you promise not to laugh at me?

(After the perm and chop all my hair of thread it's not worth blurring myself out... That horse has bolted Grin)

You need to have v small pretty features for any pixie cut

HoneyDragon · 16/06/2016 17:28

That's honestly a myth Teal, they are actually one of the most forgiving and flattering cuts out there for loads of face shapes.

Cocolepew · 16/06/2016 17:32

The 'You can't have short hair with a fat face' always comes up.
Along with its aging and we all look like Denise Welsh.

TealLove · 16/06/2016 17:36

But honestly you only pull it off if you are delicate.

Cocolepew · 16/06/2016 17:39

No you don't.

PacificDogwod · 16/06/2016 17:42

No, I don't think that's true either - I've had short hair cuts before and people have not run away screaming, honest!

It's funny what people say: the last time I went from shoulder length to v short it was all 'ooooh, it's taken years off you!' and then as it grew again the same people would 'ah yes, it's a bit more 'forgiving', isn't it, with a bit of length?' Grin

I think I am going to take a few pictures in with me and then let my hairdresser do her thang - she's good, I trust her.

Gawn, HoneyDragaon, show us all, I dare ya!! Grin

Curly pixie
Straight pixie

These are recent and a bit more grown up and sensible on account I have to look vaguely adult like working with the smalls.

Honey I remember your perm post from years ago! I LOVE those short cuts. Oh god I can feel a trip to the hairdressers.

HoneyDragon · 16/06/2016 17:48

(Oh and I put a proper fringe back in as I can't afford Botox)

HoneyDragon · 16/06/2016 17:49

I always shave it to a 1 though Smile

TealLove · 16/06/2016 17:50

HoneyDragon it suits you. Because you have delicate features.

zippyswife · 16/06/2016 17:50

I LOVE that blond shaved one. I want that. But I'm ginger and seriously frizzy of hair. I doubt I can pull that off.

HoneyDragon · 16/06/2016 17:51

No, I have two chins and a square face but I know where to put blusher. Wink

HoneyDragon · 16/06/2016 17:54

Just do it! Grin

My friend has hers similar to that (she wears it forward though) and is ginger, it looks great.

Cocolepew · 16/06/2016 17:54

Lovely Honey, all of them. I remember the perm too.
If only I had delicate features and not a hamster storing nuts face, maybe I could pull it off

TealLove · 16/06/2016 17:56

Grin you certainly do!

Cocolepew · 16/06/2016 17:56

Just whack the bleach on and you'll be grand zippy.

agirlhasnomoney · 16/06/2016 18:00

I think you have to have near perfect, symmetrical features for a pixie cut to look really good.
It can be an unforgiving style otherwise.

This pixie looks especially nice on those with very feminine small (almost dainty) feature.

Completes

LastFirstEverything · 16/06/2016 18:00

Yes, sorry Teal but I think that's nonsense.

I know several people who look really good with pixie cuts, including one of the most striking and beautiful women I've ever seen. She's quite chunky in the face, and body. She looks awesome, and hers is a very short cut too.

I think OP that start off really quite short. As you say, it grows back. And I feel that the more 'safe' versions stop being pixie-ish, and just veer off into... boring. (Nothing wrong with boring, but you should go for spectacular if at all possible!)

TealLove · 16/06/2016 18:03

There is no law to having whatever cut you like of course!
But truly the slightly longer choppy bobs look good on less delicate people.
The pixie cut it literally called so because they suit a pixie, small, cute woman.

zippyswife · 16/06/2016 18:05

I agree with last don't go safe. Go edgier otherwise I think it can look ageing.

agirlhasnomoney · 16/06/2016 18:08

This is what I think.
If you don't have the right bone structure for it, in the body and face, it can look a bit blokey.

zippyswife · 16/06/2016 18:17

Can square faces pull off short short haircuts?
