I have been in a sort of warehouse/aircraft hangar for my students exams all day, but spent a lot of it discussing perfume with my colleague who is a niche fan, and currently wearing a Creed. I gave her a squirt of Seville a l'aube which I had in my.purse, and it made me realise I have an issue with the name! It's too rich and full-on to be 'a l'aube'. IMO that would be a much lighter citrussy bergamotty orange. Seville a l'Aube is really Seville in the late, hot afternoon, possibly just those last minutes until the sun loses its strength.

MsBojangles · 21/05/2016 20:38

Seville is growing on me but it's definitely Houbigant that's stolen my heart and credit card

That no-buy went well didn't it Blush

IdentityRequest1 · 21/05/2016 20:47

Rive Gauche was very much my mum's favourite scent when I was growing up, so it makes me think of 'going out'.
I've got Marni today - I like it, bit more springlike than anything else in my collection. (Not true - I have Philosykos, but it's not summery enough for that yet, imo)

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 21/05/2016 20:55

I'm new to the thread (helloooo) but love perfume!!! Today I'm wearing vintage Very Valentino....I wore and adored this scent years ago until it was discontinued (sob sob) but DH bought me some for Christmas.

teta · 22/05/2016 14:24

Welcome to the thread LastGirl.
MsBojangles I'm also very tempted to buy the Houbigant Orange en Fleurs.I still have a nearly full bottle of Penhaligon's Orange Blossom though.I'll combine it with a spray of jo Malone's Ginger and nutmeg to get a similar feel to the Houbigant.I would also love to test the Serge Lutens for comparative purposes.

FrustratedFrugal · 22/05/2016 14:55

ThenLater I feel exactly the same - definitely a late afternoon perfume.

A lovely warm day here, I'm wearing In Love Again.

CointreauVersial · 22/05/2016 15:20

A total scrubber today, and I know it's a classic, but I really couldn't bear it - Carven Ma Griffe. It was from my latest Perfume Society box.

Ugh, just ugh. Smelled like a cross between my DSM and the Infirmary at my old boarding school. Maybe it's the jasmine, although I've never been a huge fan of chypre fragrances anyway. I have washed it off and will shortly be applying something nicer.

cressetmama · 22/05/2016 15:36

Ma Griffe may be a classic but the only times I ever wore it, a million years ago in a country far from here, bad things seemed to happen! So it's a no, just not on the basis of the way it smells. It's jinxed. Scrub now Cointreau.

Another Oudh today, for no reason.

MsBojangles · 22/05/2016 15:51

I sold my Jo Malone OB for a decent price and found a reasonable Houbigant so technically it didn't cost me a penny...she says desperately trying to convince herself Hmm

The cumin in the Lutens scared me off, I want to smell of OB not BO! Grin

CointreauVersial · 22/05/2016 20:30

MrsB - that's what I feel about Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune - I know everyone raves about the grapefruit, but all I smell is BO.

MsBojangles · 22/05/2016 21:23

Maybe we just stink have strong natural pheromones, CV Grin

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 22/05/2016 21:58

Thanks teta! Smile

I am intrigued at the samples people have talked about..does anyone know where I can order them? I would quite like to discover and try more obscure scents as I just really know mainstream ones, like Organza, J'adore, and so on.

MsBojangles · 22/05/2016 22:15

ScentCity

Indiescents

ThePerfumedCourt

Luckyscent

Here's a few to be getting on with, LastGirl...be warned though, it's an addictive business! Grin

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 23/05/2016 06:53

Have you been to nose.fr LastGirl? You pop your favourites into a little doodah and it gives you another 5 you might like, you can order them then as samples for about a tenner.

My 5 were hit and miss, 3 made me go "eeeeuw, bleeeeeargh, get me the Imperial leather quick!" one was OK, but one turned into one of my top 10 of all time (and I'm very resistant to change and new things!) Cuir de Cordoba.

It's fun to try though!

I was reading a blog post about Organza recently- and how it is really very very lovely for a "mainstream" perfume. It's on my list now to try when I next pass a bottle.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 23/05/2016 09:55

MsB that's fantastic!!! Thanks so much... this is going to be so exciting! Grin

Thanks Dark I'll give it a go...I'm even looking forward to trying some of the iffy ones!!! Organza is beautiful - very luxurious. Smile

cressetmama · 23/05/2016 10:03

Oh dear me! I am trying to test some samples and sprayed one on each wrist, Safari (which I once liked) and Deci Dela (Nina Ricci) which I didn't know; I was given huge samples of them, but very sadly they are not for me. Any takers? In the meantime, I must soap my wrists thoroughly.

Cracking through the thread ladies!

MsBojangles · 23/05/2016 19:22

Not remotely weather appropriate but I felt like comfort today so went with SL Rahat Loukoum, my dog finds it most objectionable, he gives a snort of derision and promptly leaves the room in disgust. I suspect many humans feel the same way Wink

It's like Jour de Fete's older, richer and more obnoxious sister - almond croissant with side of cherry compote, delicious!

Hope you managed to find something less objectionable after the scrubbing cresset

MissBattleaxe · 24/05/2016 11:49

SOTD Guy Laroche Clandestine. Fabulous vintage-y aldehyde with spicy powdery finish.

FrustratedFrugal · 24/05/2016 15:23

The gardenia in my office is still alive and beautifully fragrant today - so I don't need anything else.

MsBojangles · 24/05/2016 16:03

That's lasted well, you must be green of finger.

SOTD: my ancient Diorissimo.

thisfalseinsight · 24/05/2016 20:13

First time poster but I've been stalking this thread for ages - and have discovered some wonderful perfumes, so thanks very much to you all! I have a question - has anyone tried any of the Tauerville perfumes? I'm interested in Incense Flash but am not so sure about the prominent leather note, and also Vanilla Flash but don't want something too gourmand-y. Would love to hear thoughts from anyone who's tried these...or any info on where (in the UK) to buy samples?

FrustratedFrugal · 24/05/2016 20:21

I tried Vanilla Flash (from a friend's bottle) and it felt quite refined for a vanilla but it does have a gourmand feel. Would Parfumaria in the NL ship to the UK?

cressetmama · 25/05/2016 09:12

Les Senteurs offer a UK sample service, for £3.50 a pop IIRC, and I saw that they were doing the Tauers from the newsletter. Welcome, thisfalseinsight!

I keep catching a whiff of Captured by Candlelight from the 4160 Tuesdays crowd funder set, days later, from a watch strap. It's lovely but persistent!

Trying a couple of samples before going out to start the day, Artisan's Al Oudh on the left, Malle's Fleur en Cassie on the right. A minute in, I am already sure that Fleur de Cassie is rather heavier on the gardenia than I can manage. Delighted to hear that yours is still flowering well Frugal.

leedy · 25/05/2016 09:20

SOTD: Miller Harris Vetiver Insolent, which was a total impulse buy in London last week. It's really nice - not very strongly vetiver-y (but still noticeably so), woody and spicy with a tiny bit of lavender.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/05/2016 09:21

Cressetmama, Deci Dela is my longlost favourite - if you have any going spare I would happily pay.
And while I am at it, if anyone would like a 4160 Tuesdays Up The Apples And Pears 9ml I am only too happy to send it to them - out of the 22 different scents of theirs I have tried it is the only one I really wouldn't wear but I know some people love it.

Apologies for rudely announcing myself here merely in order to beg but Deci Dela is like gold dust.
