How pretty do you have to be to pull off a pixie cut?

Short hair suits me (IMHO) but ATM I have a longish fringe and some body to it.

I'm thinking of going much shorter because the current do takes quite a bit of doing, can't take any moisture in the air without flopping and I think it's a bit dated/aging.

However, I'm an ordinary looking middle aged woman, rarely wear make-up and I have a larger than average nose!

I think Judi Dench is beautiful. She has the loveliest twinkly eyes.

I'm not pretty at all. I have really short hair and have been told by many people how much it suits me. I was trying to grow it recently and a friend told me "kindly" that long hair wasn't my best look and when was i planning to get re-cropped?

I love my short hair. I don't wear make up, I have a fat face (I am overweight) and a big nose but I never feel more confident than the week after i have been to the hairdressers and been freshly cropped...

JoyceDivision · 20/06/2015 21:03

Right.

That has decided it.

I am 3 months into growing out my beloved pixie and have the shittest hair possible. I was planning to persevere to a bob, but I know when it gets there it will be lank fluffy fuzz.

i am getting it pixie'd after reading this! Grin

JoyceDivision · 20/06/2015 21:05

... and I've stopped dyeing my hair and there is lots of grey coming through so texture should be better too

iwantgin · 20/06/2015 21:12

I had mine cut v sbort into a pixie cut from shoulder length a few weeks ago.

I think it suits me better than long hair.

Not 'pretty' but I look ok. I feel I can get away with no make up as my hair isn't overpowering my face.

Have a largish nose and am pushing 50 but I think will keep it pixie length for a bit.

HelenF350 · 20/06/2015 21:17

I don't think I'm particularly pretty, I'm not skinny either just normal sized and I have a pixie crop. I love it! Would never have my hair long again.

AnyFucker · 20/06/2015 21:32

I have very short hair and am an ordinary looking nearly 50 yo

texture is the key...I am naturally soft straight mousey grey but have blonde highlights to ruffle and texturise

no spikes

lots of serum and wax to control it flat and no fluff and it really suits me

TheGoodGoodOldDays · 20/06/2015 21:40

I had mine pixie'd a few months back after 30 odd years of long hair or shoulder length bobs. This was to chop off the dye so I can let the grey come through.

I have had loads of positive comments and I do feel great. I have decent cheekbones which helps. I have started to look after my eyebrows more to frame my eyes.

And the best, most liberating thing? Realising it is hair. It grows. So having finally chopped of the dye I can grow it again now. If I want to. But it is now not scary to think "oh what the fuck, I fancy a change, let's do a pixie again". It is lovely to be free from the fear of the scissors, which after many years of duff curly bobs I had.

Mine is really short at the moment as I wanted the last ends of the dye cut off. Bit like this www.short-haircut.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Pixie-Haircuts-2013.jpg

I'd prefer it a bit longer/softer - but it grows really quickly (or seems to when it is really short) so in a few weeks it will be more how I want it.

Adventure go for it. Really. Especially as you are relatively short-haired at the moment. If you hate it - it will grow. And YY as PP said get on Pinterest - just pin stuff you like. And do a board of stuff you hate too. Don't analyse it too much. Then you may see a pattern of what you want it to end up like. I also found (and my hairdresser agreed) that having an idea of what I would hate to have helped. It meant I felt comfortable saying " I like these ones - but do what suits my hair/face - just avoid this look".

noddyholder · 20/06/2015 21:41

I think pretty with long hair may not be with very short and vice versa More about over all face shape and eyes I think. I love pixie hair

drinkscabinet · 20/06/2015 21:52

My Mum is nearly 70 and my hairdresser (who is a genius with hair) cuts her hair into a very short pixie when she comes to visit and she always looks amazing. She's a normal overweight 60 something but is lucky to have true salt and pepper hair that is pretty thick and her facial features are reasonably neat. My hairdresser makes her look incredibly sophisticated. I have an old school friend who only suits a pixie haircut, she has very neat features (small mouth and eyes) but thick hair and if she grows her hair it completely overpowers her face.

It's all about having a good haircut and not looking cheap by having a bad colour job or too much product in the hair.

AmelieinOz · 20/06/2015 21:55

I think it suits women with delicate features and fantastic bone structure.

hazeyjane · 20/06/2015 21:56

I have very very short hair, am very short and am carrying quite a bit of excess weight. I don't dye it so have a lot of grey, including a streak at the front. People always say I have strong features (this may be a bit like having a 'lovely personality'!!)

I feel like myself with short hair, and love it.

CrispyFern · 20/06/2015 22:02

I think most women look better with short hair!

Rivercam · 20/06/2015 22:47

I like Anne Hathaway's pixie cut.

JoyceDivision · 20/06/2015 22:49

I am watching Harry Potter Goblet of fire. My hair looks like a cross between ron's and harry's towards the end at teh mo. Def needs cutting.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/06/2015 22:50

I said similar re Harry's hair!

Enormouse · 20/06/2015 23:02

joyce I've been trying to grow out my pixie too. It's at that awful stage where it grows out instead of down. I look like youngest DS, who looks adorable. I look like an unkempt scruffbag.

JoyceDivision · 20/06/2015 23:08

Enormouse so do I! Which is why I am caving in and getting cropped next week! Grin

mathanxiety · 20/06/2015 23:26

I think it's the shape of your face that matters for any hairstyle, including a pixie cut. I can't pull off a pixie, I have discovered. My hair is really curly, and my face is sort of rectangular, with cheekbones that are noticeable. Longer curly hair softens my look, I find. I also think a pixie growing out would make me look ridiculous, thanks to the curls..

thedevilinside · 21/06/2015 00:30

I'm biased, but DD, 10 looks super gorgeous with her pixie cut, she's very petite, huge eyes, very pretty, but is short (so short neck). I don't think you necessarily need a long neck to pull off a pixie cut

AdventureBe · 21/06/2015 09:20

Thank you theGoodGoodOldDays, that's the pic I'm taking to the hairdressers! And I'm going to investigate HD brows Grin

I had a very short pixie for a couple of years (about an inch long). I'm not pretty exactly - not ugly - just sort of plain. I definitely suited it. People have always told me I suit hats, I've noticed that a lot of people who suit short pixie cuts, are the people who suit hats.

I'm growing it out now, as I like the feel of my natural hair & I've gone silicone free WRT haircare, and it was too high maintenance for me - I'm Miss Zero Maintenance. except for my nails

Nishky · 21/06/2015 09:46

I had a pixie several years ago and the general consensus was that it took 10 years off me. Have kept it ever since.

In fact the secretary at school cut her shoulder length bob into a pixie a few months later and said she only did it because of mine. Took 10 years off her.

I a currently looking for a new hairdresser as the one I have been going to interpreted my description of what I fancied as Demi Moore in GI Jane. Now that was NOT a good look.

So yes good hairdresser needed- my hairdresser moved areas two years ago and I have tried a few different ones and none as god as her.

noddyholder · 21/06/2015 09:48

I suit hats wish I'd had a pixie in my 30s!

Cocolepew · 21/06/2015 11:12

I suit hats too, so does my DD.
