What summer dresses can I wear with leggings?

Things that don't look weird with them!

I just discovered I love dresses but hate my legs, so don't want to wear them without leggings... The only ones I have are winter dresses so look OK with them, but I'm worried about summer dresses looking 'off' with leggings...

help please?

Yes, I wear leggings to the office sometimes. Our HR manager does too so I'm pretty confident I dress appropriately.

And I wear them with structured, fitted clothes. I quite often mix something smart with something casual (e.g. leggings, plimsolls, sweatshirt etc.)

Same with going out in them, obviously it depends on where but it's not like I'm off to film premieres every week.

wigglylines · 27/04/2015 18:31

Runningupthathill82 I certainly do wear leggings to the office.

In fact (as I mentioned upthread) I went for the informal interview for my current role in a nice dress and leggings.

IfNot, do you mean Airbrush Legs in Light Glow? Am looking at the Boots website for it. It's on offer!

Do you really spray it into your hand and then onto legs, as the online info says? Does that work OK?

I only wear 'leggings' to the gym - the word is in inverted commas as they are the thicker, sports leggings. I don't own a pair of 'regular! And if I did, I'd only wear them in the house, never to work / night out. I don't own a tunic top / tea dress sort of thing either.

Bare legs in summer / tights with dresses in winter.

Cocolepew · 27/04/2015 19:50

I do fake tan but dometimes I like to wear leggings with a dress because I like the look

wigglylines · 27/04/2015 20:25

This is the kind of dress I wear with leggings.

If I had to wear tights I couldn't wear them, way to short!

If you don't wear leggings ever, why are you on a thread about what to wear with them SinglePringle? It's just rude. It's not like your point hasn't been made 98 times.

Also, if you have boots on, how are leggings worse than tights in winter? They're cotton (can be anyway!) for a start, which is much better for lady bits.

Rosebag · 27/04/2015 20:45

Where's that dress from wiggly I love it!

SinglePringle · 27/04/2015 20:50

hopeful because anyone can post anywhere they like on here and because I've been following the thread since the beginning and the question was asked whether those who didn't wear leggings with dresses ever wore them.

So I answered. Do hope that meets with approval.

Also, I wasn't rude, I merely answered a question / stated my taste. I've not passed comment on anyone else's style or reason for posting.

Morebiscuitsplease · 27/04/2015 21:05

i find tights increasingly uncomfortable. They fall down, ladder...leggings stay up and are warmer. Perhaps those of you who favour tights can tell me where to buy decent ones.

I wear leggings/dress to work - similarly I often wear skinny jeans with a nice blouse. I'm a lecturer so not really office based per se, but I do see female office staff at my work in similar outfits.

itsbetterthanabox · 27/04/2015 22:25

Singlepringle what do you wear?

SinglePringle · 27/04/2015 22:50

Lots of different things. Today I wore red wedge shoes from Zara with dark flared jeans and a cream silk blouse with a tiny green leaf print and pussy bow. Tomorrow I'm wearing slim fit boyfriend jeans, a white short sleeved sweatshirt that's got a leather pattern appliquéd on the front and white block heeled sandals. Or I might wear a pale blue leather pencil skirt if it's warm.

Yesterday I was in turned up skinnys with pale yellow Superga trainers and a cream t-shirt.

I wear the same as everyone I guess. I like dresses and bare legs and heels in the summer and have quite a few for work. Also wear cigarette pants and rolled up chinos. And jackets. I like structured (non Jersey) jackets.

I've made no judgement on those who do wear dresses and leggings. Just said that I don't.

Runningupthathill82 · 27/04/2015 22:52

Pringle, I am coveting your wardrobe!

SinglePringle · 27/04/2015 23:09

Thanks! Very kind!

SaucyJack · 27/04/2015 23:42

I love leggings and dresses, and I am genuinely sniggering to myself at those who think Breton stripes and well fitting slacks look non-mumsy.

Floisme · 28/04/2015 07:36

I often see young asian women wearing leggings very creatively and they look fab. If this thread's still around later, I'll try and find sme links.

OnlyLovers · 28/04/2015 10:43

Bare legs in summer / tights with dresses in winter.

See, I just don't find it as simple as that. That's so black and white, but IRL sometimes it's too warm to wear tights, which tend to be at least partly made from man-made fabrics and a bit sweaty unless the weather's really cold; but it's not warm enough for bare legs.

It's a bit like clothes shops, which seem to swing between massive heavy wool jumpers that go from chin to thigh in winter and then as soon as it's March, put out all these impossibly wispy light cotton things and sleeveless things. In the UK we have quite a lot of in-between weather and neither of these two extremes really serves it very well!

OnlyLovers · 28/04/2015 10:44

Thanks, IfNot. If it works when you spray it on your legs, then why not? I might try it while it's on sale.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/04/2015 10:58

Inspired by this thread I wore a tunic and leggings and my converse on the school run today - waiting for the fainting fashionistas to litter my path, I was very disappointed that there was no pitch fork wielding mob chasing me home ready to burn my 'devils leg coverings' on a nice big fire then sling me on after.

It was very uneventful. [shrug emoticon]

I work in an office but the profession i am in (Social Work) means there is a real mix of clothes - from very casual to smart.

I probably verge more on the smart/casual, as opposed to smart proper office wear (no suits!)...I wear dresses with tights usually. But now that the better weather is here I will wear a mix of chinos/tops and dresses/leggings. Some of the dresses I wore with tights won't look right with leggings though. They are a little smarter - in my mind anyway. For court I would always wear a dress and tights. I don't own a suit but usually wear a jersey blazer.

I wouldn't wear leggings to a smart function, no. I would wear them on a night out though. Dinner and drinks with friends - yes.

Smart functions - including weddings, christenings etc I would usually wear a formal dress to just above my knee with tan and heels.

I think that's part of the issue - I don't wear heels during the day - maybe if I did I would feel more confident baring my legs!

So, running - when I say I replace tights with leggings it's not including very formal functions/settings. It's a cooler alternative as I find tights very warm. It's also a casual alternative.

I would never wear leggings as trousers. I would feel like I am out wearing tights and a top! But that's more to do with my weight than anything else. Friends have come out wearing the leather look leggings and look amazing Grin

Someone mentioned feeling overdressed and I often feel like that - I have very casual dresses that cost £12 which I wear with leggings, pumps, a nice scarf and nice jewellery. It's casual for me but seems quite dressy.

I should probably add - if I was a size 10 with perfect pins I probably wouldn't wear leggings!

HopefulHamster · 28/04/2015 23:15

I didn't realise someone had asked the question, Single I simply find it strange that so many on this section of the forum are willing to say 'this sucks' rather than ignore a thread that isn't super relevant to them. You can post away, I will still think some people are rude depending on each post.

Your wardrobe sounds lovely, I wish I had time to think about mine in such detail.

What I like about dresses is that they are essentially an outfit in one item. But I hate hate hate the feel of tights. I feel the cold so it has to be full on summer for me to go bare legged - which I will do. But happily I feel leggings are a nice cotton alternative to tights. Sometimes they look mumsy, sometimes they look fab!

I'm really into patterned leggings from molo (swedish kids designer) at the moment. I've got some in a 'space bird' (real name mineral universe) design and some flowery ones that look fab with a black or grey plain tunic. Not fashionable, but I love them.
