What summer dresses can I wear with leggings?

Things that don't look weird with them!

I just discovered I love dresses but hate my legs, so don't want to wear them without leggings... The only ones I have are winter dresses so look OK with them, but I'm worried about summer dresses looking 'off' with leggings...

help please?

Herbaceous is a fox.

I wear dresses with leggings a lot. I do find S&B a bit of a bastion of restrained Good Taste, I have to say. Which is fine if you're that sort of person but I'm not.

bigTillyMint · 26/04/2015 11:29

Oh yes, Herbs is very stylish, and a bargain-hunter to boot!

OP wear what you want and feel comfortable in - the key to looking good is not just about grooming and clothes choice, but confidence and feeling happy in your own skinSmile

I have also been living in black leggings and mid thigh tops/tunics with ugg style boots in winter. I am also wondering about similar for the winter as my legs are not fat but veins/bruises etc.

What is the difference between leggins and footless tights please and can someone send a link to which type of footless tights are good?

Judydreamsofhorses · 26/04/2015 13:57

These are the footless tights I wear:

Leggings make my legs look fatter even if the skirt/dress is long. I think they cut off your legs and make them look shorter. But that could just be me, I have short legs anyway.

I like the sandals in your third link Noddy - where is that link from?

I did find that when I first had children I succumbed to the white stuff/tunic/legging look as I thought it was practical (also had a bob) but I don't think it is the most flattering look. or it wasn't for me at any rate.

the links to footless tights and Helena/Siena et al do look good, but they're very stylish, slim women. I think bare legs with a midi skirt or dress are better and fake tan.

Floisme · 26/04/2015 15:29

I agree bare legs look good. When it's warm enough. Most days of the year it isn't or at least not where I live.

Judy thanks for that footless tights link - and colours other than black too, that's just what I'm after!

motherinferior · 26/04/2015 15:30

Also, comfort is quite important. Clothes you can move in confidently and without thinking about them or being self-conscious are in fact more stylish as they aid poise and grace IMO. Same with pants and shoes.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 26/04/2015 15:44

Nrft, soz, but I would say;

60s style shift dress, with black ( or grey or white?)leggings- yes.
slouchy t shirt dress-yes
floaty floral or pale patterned chiffon type dress-hell no. Looks awkward and frumpy.

Having said that, I am breaking all rules today with a sort of 50 s vintage bell shaped mid calf skirt, plus black leggings and wrap cardi. I possibly look a bit weird..

IfNotNowThenWhen · 26/04/2015 15:45

Ooh may I also just say- Sally Hanson Perfect Legs, for all those with thread veins etc. It's the biz.

GooodMythicalMorning · 26/04/2015 16:03

Its barely warm enough to go without leggings even if I wanted to.

Bunbaker · 26/04/2015 18:00

"Leggings make my legs look fatter even if the skirt/dress is long. I think they cut off your legs and make them look shorter. But that could just be me, I have short legs anyway."

Any clothing that ends at the widest part of you always makes you look fatter. The trick is to have a dress/top/tunic end at the narrowest part. This is why I don't wear hip length tops over skinny jeans.

wigglylines · 26/04/2015 18:28

So, i'm curious, those of you who think leggings should not be worn with dresses, what do you think leggings should be worn with?

I only wear them with dresses!

Are you totally anti-leggings or is there another way you think they should be worn?

herethereandeverywhere · 26/04/2015 18:48

I wear leggings under dresses so I don't bare my knickers to the world as I bend down/over to deal with young kids and/or shopping. I wear them with ballet flats unless it's really hot when I'll wear birkenstocks.

I like cotton leggings with lycra as they're cool and fit well. I also prefer cropped ones with a bit of tanned leg showing.

I expect if I drove everywhere and just needed to breeze about for 2 minutes between car journeys and my own home I'd be able to adhere to the MN 'no dress and leggings' rule. I wouldn't wear the combo on a night out.

I'm a size 10-12, 5'3". I like boden (though v.wintery colours) and american apparel for mine.

Types of dresses: shift or skater finishing above the knee in cotton to keep cool for summer. Have had to accept viscose as companies reduce cost (White Stuff and Abercrombie & Fitch I'm looking at you...)

It is a bit of a mum uniform but...well.. I'm a mum!

Runningupthathill82 · 26/04/2015 20:27

Wiggly - I think, for me, leggings could be worn:

  • when pregnant, with a long top or dress
  • to yoga
  • for after a run, to pull on over running tights and keep warm on the way home

For anyone else, totally up to them, but for me I'd feel frumpy if I wore them on an everyday basis.

Maybe for light exercise, doing push ups around the house or whatever. Or for nipping to put the bin out?!

OP have you thought about [http://www.asos.com/Women/Dresses/Shirt-Dresses/Cat/pgecategory.aspx?cid=13053 shirt dresses?] or [http://www.asos.com/search/Printed-leggings?hrd=1&q=Printed+leggings printed leggings]]

itsbetterthanabox · 26/04/2015 21:21

Leggings look nice imo with dresses
I don't care what other people wear but I'd never wear leggings and a top instead of a dress because it looks quite naked/half dressed and quite 80's. With dresses they are just like tights. Most people wouldn't wear tights and just a top and I see leggings as the same.
Not sure why being pregnant makes a difference?

NoRockandRollFun · 26/04/2015 21:26

I give up with the links. What I'm trying to say is, I think the whole black leggings and Bodenish tunic look that is so slated on here has just evolved into something else. I think the basic sillohette of tight bottoms and something wafty and longish on the top is still around, it's just not all about tea dresses and plain leggings anymore.

Runningupthathill82 · 26/04/2015 21:42

Itsbetter.. I don't think anyone on this entire thread has suggested that leggings should be worn with just a top. Aside from maybe when I said they could be worn over running tights, after a race.

And bring pregnant made a difference for me because I was short of clothes. My existing dresses became shorter due to the bump, so leggings made them wearable. If I was wealthy I would just have bought better clothes that fit me - it wasn't a stylish decision, but a comfortable and cheap one!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 26/04/2015 21:56

As far as I am concerned if all I did was stand still in non windy conditions then a dress without leggings would be fine. But as I am required to walk around, bend, squat, sit, dash up stairs and other activities then to wear leggings is to protect the world from unpleasant viewsGrin (being tallish and large of thigh it is a strong possibility) - So if leggings make dress wearing more comfortable for me then yay leggings...

wigglylines · 26/04/2015 22:17

Running, OK, I think I get it ...

You don't have a problem with leggings and dresses per se. You have a problem with leggings being worn as an ordinary item of clothing?

I think you see leggings the same way I see my slouchy round-the-house tracksuit bottoms. I would wear them for excercise, to put the bins out or for comfort at home, but I wouldn't wear them out to the shops even, unless very pregnant. Am I in the right area?

I on the other hand see leggings as simply a more comfortable option to tights, but not mych different - a perfectly respectable piece of clothing on a par with skinny jeans or tights.

wigglylines · 26/04/2015 22:18

So are all the anti-leggings-with-dresses people really objecting to leggings being worn full stop, not the combination?

Floisme · 27/04/2015 07:44

10 degrees outside....I hope we're all going bare legged today ladies Grin

Runningupthathill82 · 27/04/2015 08:04

Noooo - today is cigarette trousers, flats, silk shirt. I would freeze in bare legs today and nobody wants to see my blue veins.

And wiggly - yep. You've got it spot on, that's exactly how I feel about leggings!
