If you are 40 something, do you wear denim mini skirts?

Just bought one because I have always had a short denim skirt for winter with tights. Bought it online and this one is a bit mini-er than I was planning (mid thigh rather than just an inch above the knee) and I'm not sure I can get away with it. If I was 25 then maybe but I'm 41. Will everyone think I'm mutton dressed as lamb? My legs are ok but not super toned and I'm short (5'2").

Does anyone else wear mini skirts in their 40s?

Yes, but only in a/w with thick tights or leggings. Terribly passe I know, but it's a look that's very me.

leedy · 22/09/2014 10:24

Similarly, in winter with thick tights. In summer tend to go for just above the knee with bare legs.

DiaDuit · 22/09/2014 10:28

I'm 20 something and wouldnt wear one as denim skirts look hideous with everything, but especially with thick tights and i'm assuming knee boots of some description.

Only1scoop · 22/09/2014 10:31

I think they look awful unless really tall and slim and then only with thick tights and loafers in winter....

Sorry

Makinglists · 22/09/2014 10:37

Only with thick tights/leggings - never, ever without something covering my lumpy legs. I'm 5'8 and about 1.5st overweight - so prob not really a good look but i'm ok with it.

burnishedsilver · 22/09/2014 10:55

No.
However, I have a denim pencil skirt.

hellsbellsmelons · 22/09/2014 10:58

Only if it's black with thick tights and boots in the winter.

PolyesterBride · 22/09/2014 10:59

Hm. Not sounding too positive! I could still take it back and look for a just above the knee one. I really like the mini, and I like denim skirts, but there's no point having it if I am filled with doubt every time I put it on and never wear it.

Yes I'd wear it with thick tights and usually knee boots. Is that just a bad look?!

I am 45 and wear them in winter with opaque tights and boots and leather jacket. In summer I wear mine with white sort of hippy blouse, tan leather sandals and bag. I am five feet 1.

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 22/09/2014 11:04

I think it is a good look.

PolyesterBride · 22/09/2014 11:05

Is that a mini mini chicken? Or more like a normal pencil skirt? Concerned about the shortness of mine!

OP posts:
JennyOnTheBlocks · 22/09/2014 11:05

do you feel comfortable in it, OP?

yes?

then that's the perfect 'look' for you

DiaDuit · 22/09/2014 11:05

It is in my book tbh. Sorry! Ive seen it on lots of people and it looked awful on them all. I honestly think denim skirts are 'cute' in that they are cute on children/young teens but just dont transfer to grown women. Sorry. Again.

LaCerbiatta · 22/09/2014 11:05

I'm 40 and want one. Also with boots and thick tights. I think they're fine. Maybe not super trendy but imo some looks are just classic, even if not cutting edge.

smoothieooo · 22/09/2014 11:06

Yes (and I'm 47). My legs are fairly slim/toned although I've got patches of thread veins. I don't care if I look like mutton dressed as lamb! Grin

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 22/09/2014 11:07

Its about 3 inches above my knee, not bum skimming and not a pencil shirt either. Because I am so short it would probably be a mini, mini on someone else.

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 22/09/2014 11:10

I am not bothered about mutton, dated or whatever and just love wearing mine with rolls necks, roll tops etc. It is just a denim shirt, same as my cord, leather, knitted and velvet skirts.

Redefined · 22/09/2014 11:12

Other people will always tend toward flattery on the basis that we should all do as we please...... "of course you can wear it if you want to"..... but if you are not sure you can get away with it, then you probably shouldn't try, and if you think it could look like mutton dressed as lamb, then it probably will.

bonkersLFDT20 · 22/09/2014 11:13

I think shorter looks better than just above the knee to be honest (unless it's a pencil skirt).

I have an indigo thick cotton mini (not quite denim, but that sort of look). I wear with thick tights and boots. I have nice legs and am 43 (until Friday!).

I am pretty sure I don't look like mutton, but probably not particularly on the cutting edge of fashion, but hey....at 43 (until Friday :-) I don't care! It's comfy and warm and shows of my nice legs.

Penguinsaresmall · 22/09/2014 11:16

Yes I wear them but only a really short mini with thick tights & boots of some description.

I think longer denim skirts of any description generally look a bit crap though.

Redrosesplease · 22/09/2014 11:16

No no no!

A 40 + woman really can't get away with a) light denim and b) a mini, regardless of tights!

If you aim to look sophisticated but trendy this is not a good look, especially if you are a bit short.

If you don't care or miraculously look in your 20s then it's ok but if you look mature ..sorry!

OnlyLovers · 22/09/2014 11:18

It doesn't look that short.

I have two much shorter, one dark denim and one yellow denim. I wear them with opaque tights, knee boots and a chunky jumper. I'm only a bit younger than you, although I'm taller. I love my thighs and think they're much better than my lower legs, so I show them off more.

If you like your legs and feel comfortable then fuck it, wear it. Wear what you like. People who don't like it don't have to like it.

burnishedsilver · 22/09/2014 11:21

It's too short imo.
