If you are 40 something, do you wear denim mini skirts?

Just bought one because I have always had a short denim skirt for winter with tights. Bought it online and this one is a bit mini-er than I was planning (mid thigh rather than just an inch above the knee) and I'm not sure I can get away with it. If I was 25 then maybe but I'm 41. Will everyone think I'm mutton dressed as lamb? My legs are ok but not super toned and I'm short (5'2").

Does anyone else wear mini skirts in their 40s?

I don't wear denim mini skirts as I'm not much of a denim wearer but I do love short skirts and wear them all year around.

I'm forty in a couple of week's time and this is what I wore today (I post outfits pretty regularly to horrify my Instagram followers!) - tartan Black Milk skirt (I get most of my clothes from there at the moment), 90s throwback T shirt, tights, Doc Marten boots. I dress like this pretty much every day during the autumn/winter - short skirt/t shirt/cardigan/tights/boots or skater dress/cardigan/tights/boots. It's easy to throw together and doesn't attract incredulous stares so I think I'm doing okay?

I'm guessing that quite a lot of people think that I ought to put it away, dress in a more 'age appropriate' way and maybe crack out the beige a bit more but I'm really happy, comfortable and confident when I dress this way.

Spartacus the discussion is not about minis, which most posters seem to wear including me, but about denim minis...

WanderingTrolley1 · 23/09/2014 15:46

As long as you're not bare-legged, I think it's fine.

Fabulassie · 23/09/2014 16:41

I have to admit that I'm not crazy about denim minis. The one I have is a dark denim and has a fair bit stretch to it so it doesn't have that A-line look to it and it flatters my bum.

NoImSpartacus · 23/09/2014 16:54

Twinklestein thanks for your input, always good to have the thread police on hand. As it clearly bothered you, I will take the time to explain to you why I didn’t mention the denim mini, and shock horror, came off topic ever so slightly.

Some of the comments haven’t specifically been about the denim mini, for example redrose’s comment "No no no! A 40 + woman really can't get away with a) light denim and b) a mini, regardless of tights!" and burnishedsilver didn’t mention the fabric, just the length, “It's too short imo”.

HTH

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/09/2014 17:09

GobblersNob and Noddy I actually think I love you both. That is all. :)

Sootgremlin · 23/09/2014 17:57

Going back to the original post, that skirt looks fine, and imagining the look of it I can't see think of anything wrong with it at all. I wear that all the time and see women of all ages in it.

Denim is neutral and goes with everything. If life is too short to stuff a mushroom then it's certainly too short to categorise fabric according to age group.

I'm early thirties and tried on a midi dress the other day and I felt awfully frumpy in it because it just didn't suit my figure at all, and wouldn't whether I was twenty or forty. I've seen women in both age groups look great in them. The age thing is just such a nonsense.

whattheseithakasmean · 23/09/2014 18:17

I thought about this at work (how sad am I?) and decided I will never be convinced that a denim mini is anything other than awful. However, the OP could go for a needlecord skirt in place of denim, which would hopefully achieve the casual winter look without the 80s bubbleperm throwback connotations.

I won't engage with the ranters - this is Style & Beauty, so of course we will comment on clothes we like and those we don't.

Floisme · 23/09/2014 18:50

Where is the ranting whattheseithakasmean? I think this has been a pretty civilised thread - you should have seen the last shorts at 40 one Grin

Twinklestein · 23/09/2014 19:07

I'm not policing anything Spartacus, you got on a soapbox to address - what - 2 posters? Most people here said minis are fine...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/09/2014 19:22

Needlecord good; denim bad???!!! Why do I feel as if I am living on a farm and probably called Boxer?

foxdongle · 23/09/2014 19:38

I'm wearing one of mine today, feeling a bit rebellious obviously, no-one arrested me or laughed or took a blind bit of notice

Sootgremlin · 23/09/2014 19:39

Because some skirts are more equal than others Remus Grin

I own a dark blue cord skirt and a denim skirt, I didn't realise one was awful and one not. They create remarkably similar looks. It's like trying to choose between Han Solo and Indiana Jones. (I suppose that is a throwback reference to go with my look though!)

Floisme · 23/09/2014 19:44

40-year old woman wears denim mini skirt shock!!

If you are 40 something, do you wear denim mini skirts?
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/09/2014 19:46

So it seems, Soot. Am at work all week, but guess what I'll be wearing at the weekend! :)

PolyesterBride · 23/09/2014 20:26

Oh thank you TimeForAnother! I am going to order that one.

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/09/2014 20:28

The Indigo one is the one I've got. I'm 5'2 and it is very short - shorter than mid thigh on me (I have v long legs compared to the rest of me though!).

PolyesterBride · 23/09/2014 20:46

Hm...I have short legs so maybe it will be ok. Also had to order a bigger size than usual as my normal
Size was out of stock. Even if it's just an inch or so longer than the other one, it might seem less "mini" and more just "short". It would probably help if I actually got off my arse and went to the shops to try things on...

Outside a sports centre today, I saw a women over 50 rocking this outfit - Barbie pink denim jacket and pink lace up shoes, blue and white stripe tunic, navy leggings, short stylish white hair.

I thought of this thread and told her how fab she looked and how I'd heard " someone " say that 41 was too old for a denim mini. She disagreed. And told me she was 67 Grin

Lizzylou · 23/09/2014 20:50

I am 41 and wear denim/other minis, I am 5ft 9" and have disproportionately long legs for my height as well.
So, there you have it. Really, nowt worth getting het up over, surely?

TimeForAnotherNameChange · 24/09/2014 08:06

OP the indigo collection one wad three inches longer than the other mini when I measured, 18" vs 15". The 18" on me sat wonderfully above the knee, two inches or so perhaps - short and youthful but not arse skimmingly indecent. I love it!

toptrumps1 · 24/09/2014 13:27

This thread is weird, lots of people confusing style and fashion imho.

The fact is that denim skirts aren't "in fashion" at the moment. The minute they are and all the style bloggers start wearing them/be given them for free to promote, we'll be all over them, and I'd love to revisit this thread when that happens. Ditto how its all about ankle boots at the moment and not knee high boots, and dare I say it, there was a time a few years ago when it was the height of cool to wear leggings (but lets not pull on that string!). They WILL all come back round again.

Anyone can wear anything if worn with the right combination of other clothes, on the right shape body and for the right occasion. Denim skirts, knee high boots, leggings. That is style. (But as I said, just my opinion). Being 40yrs old or otherwise is irrelevant.

Fabulassie · 24/09/2014 13:36

Well said, toptrumps!

Surely being in your 40's and above means you know what you like, know what looks good on you, and can wear what you like.
