If you are 40 something, do you wear denim mini skirts?

Just bought one because I have always had a short denim skirt for winter with tights. Bought it online and this one is a bit mini-er than I was planning (mid thigh rather than just an inch above the knee) and I'm not sure I can get away with it. If I was 25 then maybe but I'm 41. Will everyone think I'm mutton dressed as lamb? My legs are ok but not super toned and I'm short (5'2").

Does anyone else wear mini skirts in their 40s?

My other favourite is: 'If you wore it the first time round, you're too old too wear it now.'
I mean there is nothing in the shops I haven't worn the first time round. Nothing. Apart, perhaps, from that wimple, leedy Grin

Wear it. I am 5ft 2 and wear a mini one with bare legs. I do have very toned slim legs though. Just make sure you keep it casual with a t-shirt and flats, pref trainers, flip flops or espadrilles. Never would wear it with heels or a revealing top, regardless of age Grin

leedy · 22/09/2014 14:59

Nope, not much here either. Definitely had a pair of skinny jeans as a kid. Ditto ankle boots, ditto, ooh, lots of my wardrobe.

I do draw the line at revisiting fluoro deelyboppers, mind.

Hmmm2014 · 22/09/2014 15:00

I would wear it. But then I also wear tiny denim shorts in the summer. And am over 40. Stuff what anyone thinks!!!

Floisme · 22/09/2014 15:04

I draw the line at cartoon characters. And a ribbon in my hair. There are loads of other things I don't wear 'cos I don't have the body any more but that's different.

museumum · 22/09/2014 15:08

The flip side is that I bought one from eBay that comes down to my knees and Iook like a big frumpy frump in it. Seriously it's awful. I might take it to the tailor to have a good two inches hacked off it. I certainly can't wear it this length (and I'm 5'2" too).

PacificDogwood · 22/09/2014 15:10

Wear it, if you have the legs.

I've never worn miniskirts because I've never had the legs Sad. At least I have insight in to my condition Grin

Age does not come in to it

minkymuskyslyoldstoaty · 22/09/2014 15:15

wear it.

i wear mine with thick tights and biker boots when it's cold, and a big fluffy scarf.

my knickers aren't showing, my legs are covered. i am 5ft3 and 45.

I think women are supposed to be sexless once they're in their 40's. You know - past the breeding age so off the market or whatever. The fact is, middle-aged women can be completely sexy and beautiful. And men - often young men - feel very enthusiastic about that. This seems to upset and disgust some other women, I think.

Floisme · 22/09/2014 15:43

It definitely seems to touch a nerve.

victoryinthekitchen · 22/09/2014 15:43

I think it's a great look, especially with bright knitwear and funky boots, I get compliments when I wear these love seeing my friends in this :)

KristinaM · 22/09/2014 15:50

I wear mini skirts in my 50s. Not denim as that's not my style, I'm more classic

I wear wool skirts, opaques and loafers

My friend who is in her 40s wear leather shorts and tights, she looks wonderful .

gerbiltamer · 22/09/2014 16:24

Blimey, I like wearing denim skirts and wouldn't be perturbed by it.

lurkingfromhome · 22/09/2014 16:35

Also in my 40s (alas, will never even see 45 again) and love a short denim skirt in winter. Thick coloured tights, boots, chunky knit, nice big scarf. Sorted. These comments from young women basically telling us to put it away are really disappointing.

squoosh · 22/09/2014 16:44

Denim minis are hideous on anyone over 10. Makes the wearer's arse look massive.

Fabulassie · 22/09/2014 16:46

Speak for yourself, Squoosh.

squoosh · 22/09/2014 16:50

and flat

BravePotato · 22/09/2014 16:58

I am forty three (there, I have said it) and wear minis.

Not super super short ones, but between mid-thigh and knee.

Most dresses are a bit mini on me anyway as I am 6ft1.

One jersey Hobbs dress looks demure enough on my friend, but on me looks "mini" and a bit sexy.

I like how it looks. I also have a proper tweed-mini, which I only wear with opaque tights. I love the contrast between the demureness of tweed and the cheekiness of a mini.

BloodFlower · 22/09/2014 18:25

Wear it! With thick tights, unless it's positively bum-skimming, it can only be entirely inoffensive :)

50ShadesOfSummer · 22/09/2014 18:57

Bloody hell, another mutton thread! As others have said, wear it and ignore the nay-sayers. I'm mid forties and I wear minis with tights. (But I also wear shorts with tights so that probably condemns me in the eyes of some.)

Twinklestein · 22/09/2014 19:01

On the one hand wear whatever the hell you like. On the other, it depends whether you want to look nice or not...

MrsCampbellBlack · 22/09/2014 19:02

Wear whatever you like.

Personally at 42 I just don't feel like wearing minis anymore, mainly because I think they look better with flat shoes/boots and I prefer to wear heels.

MrsCampbellBlack · 22/09/2014 19:04

And 'mutton dressed as lamb' is a horrid phrase but I do wear different stuff now than I wore in my 20's and even 30's.

Possibly because my body is not what it was, if I looked like Sophie Vargero I probably would wear a crop top and mini skirt all the time Wink

Floisme · 22/09/2014 19:04

Do please finish Twinklestein Grin Why doesn't it look nice, if your legs are good?

Floisme · 22/09/2014 19:06

I wear different stuff too, not because of my age but because I look different and my body has changed.
