If you are 40 something, do you wear denim mini skirts?

Just bought one because I have always had a short denim skirt for winter with tights. Bought it online and this one is a bit mini-er than I was planning (mid thigh rather than just an inch above the knee) and I'm not sure I can get away with it. If I was 25 then maybe but I'm 41. Will everyone think I'm mutton dressed as lamb? My legs are ok but not super toned and I'm short (5'2").

Does anyone else wear mini skirts in their 40s?

After reading this, I want to go downtown and hunt for a denim over the knee skirt, maybe even a mini! I have only got a few more months to thumb my nose at those who think women in their 40s are too old, and i will then be positioned to immediately thumb my nose at those who allow it for the 40s, but not the 50s.

MrsEboJones76 · 22/09/2014 19:38

I'm 38 and my denim skirt is a year round staple! It's not very very short but well above the knee. I'm 5ft and have toned legs from running.
In summer I wear with crew neck t-shirts and cotton tops. Either with havaianas or low heel tan ankle boots.
In winter I wear with navy opaques (I dislike denim skirts and black opaques), a thick jumper and heeled ankle boots.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/09/2014 19:54

Yes. Am 44 and bought a really rather short one a few months ago, to replace my slightly less short but too big one. I wore it with bare legs and Converse or sandals in the summer, and have already worn it with tights and biker boots too.

Legs are pretty decent (one of the few bits of me that are!).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/09/2014 19:57

And I used to agree with Mrs E re denim skirts and black opaques but I've decided that so long as the boots are ankle and not knee high (overtones of ladies of the night) that I actually quite like it now. Mine isn't as short (quite) or as pale as this but I think the black tights actually work well here in a retro 80s sort of way.

Floisme · 22/09/2014 19:59

Your legs often hold out the longest as you get older, that's why some of these opinions are so bizarre.

Agree the skirt isn't nice - it was just to use as an example with black tights.

noddyholder · 22/09/2014 20:02

I think just above the knee is all wrong on me I think the Boden style denim is a bit frumpy. (runs) I prefer shorter like the pic Love that look and its something my friends would wear.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/09/2014 20:04

Just above the knee makes me look fatter and frumpier - short is deffo better for me. Glad that I'm not the only old slapper, Noddy. Grin

noddyholder · 22/09/2014 20:05

No I am even older and prob more slapper Grin

noddyholder · 22/09/2014 20:06

I have no denim minis but am considering one now

Floisme · 22/09/2014 20:07

I'd love to be an old slapper.... sadly my legs don't cut it any more, although from below the knee down, if I say so myself, they're still cracking Smile

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 22/09/2014 20:19

" I want to dress down "

I think this is where the age thing does come into play. I don't think a mini skirt can be dressing down unless you're very young (even 25 probably too old) and still in the "throwing on whatever and still unconsciously carrying it off" phase. There's nothing wrong with a miniskirt over that age, but it's not going to look as though you're dressing down.

Although if you're 5'2" then is that even going to be a mini on you? The model's 5'9".

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 22/09/2014 20:35

What's denim skirt, T shirt, flip flops then if it's not dressing down? What's age got to do with dressing down or not?
Do you think if your saw Jennifer Aniston in a denim skirt on Malibu beach you would think she's dressing up or down?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/09/2014 20:41

Not understanding the 'up/down' stuff at all. Denim mini skirts are pretty casual - that is the point of them, surely?

5madthings · 22/09/2014 20:45

I am 35 so not over 40 bit am currently rely wearing a denim mini skirt it is wEll above my knee but not independently short. O wear it with tights and boots or converse or leggings etc in a variety of colours and styles. I can dress it up for going out or just wear with a casual fitted top during the day. It's easy and comfortable and skirts with tights and boots a're a staple in my autum/winter wardrobe.

I run and cycle and have decent legs. Meh I feel happy in it :)

"What's denim skirt, T shirt, flip flops then if it's not dressing down"

A bit chilly at the school gates in late September/October (which is when the OP is planning to wear this)? And also looking a bit odd, and probably attracting attention, with thick tights and knee boots (which the OP is planning to wear with it). Not sure where the flip flops would go, really.

Mini skirt/thick tights/boots isn't formal wear, sure. But it's clearly a step up from what the OP's peers are going to be wearing (that being the whole thrust of the thread) so if she wears it she isn't going to feel as though she's dressing down. And she wants to feel as though she's dressing down.

Someone who didn't need to ask the question could probably make a mini look dressed down. Someone who does need to ask probably can't.

I'm 49 & have a black denim mini skirt that gets worn a lot in the winter with thick tights & flat boots. I bought it when I was 21 & re-dye it when it fades.

I have a blue/green checked tweed mini skirt bought from a charity shop years ago - it had a matching jacket that I wore with other things for a while before slinging out. Still wear it sometimes in the winter, again with thick tights & boots.

I have a leather mini skirt that doesn't get worn very often, but it is great - last time I wore it was to an outrageous party, with a tight long-sleeved top, lacy tights & over-the-knee boots Grin

Christ. I'm 41 and wear my denim mini (bought 10 years ago at Topshop) with tights and boots in winter, and with bare legs and flats in summer. I have great legs, I'm not putting them away just yet. Sure, the mini with platforms isn't a look I'd brave any more but styled as above - why not?

Twinklestein · 22/09/2014 21:45

Why doesn't it look nice, if your legs are good?

My legs are probably my best bit and I wear a lot of minis, but I draw the line at a denim because at 43, it's not very sophisticated & I don't want to look like Donna's mum from Two Pints. It's the female equivalent of Jeremy Clarkson dressing...

pinkflaming0 · 22/09/2014 21:50

I am 48 and yes, I wear a denim mini skirt. Only with opaque tights - grey or dark blue with grey suede wedge knee boots or black with black flat riding style leather knee boots.

I wouldn't wear heeled (non-wedge) boots.

I am tall and slim with very good legs which I still like to show off despite because I'm approaching 50. I even wear shorts with opaque tights sometimes even to work (but that's a whole other thread - pass the smelling salts!).

carlywurly · 22/09/2014 21:52

This thread is Confused
I love my faded denim mini and I'm late 30's. I wear with sloppy jumper, big scarf, tights and biker boots in winter usually, or sometimes on the beach with a vest top in summer.

I never realised it was an age restricted item. Why are we so harsh on each other?

noddyholder · 22/09/2014 21:56

Not sophisticated? What do you even mean by that. I have a suede mini and it looks great I am getting it out tomorrow in honour of this thread. I think a denim mini with wool tights sloppy jumper beanie hat, boots, looks great
