If you are 40 something, do you wear denim mini skirts?

Just bought one because I have always had a short denim skirt for winter with tights. Bought it online and this one is a bit mini-er than I was planning (mid thigh rather than just an inch above the knee) and I'm not sure I can get away with it. If I was 25 then maybe but I'm 41. Will everyone think I'm mutton dressed as lamb? My legs are ok but not super toned and I'm short (5'2").

Does anyone else wear mini skirts in their 40s?

OP posts:
noddyholder · 22/09/2014 12:25

I love her! Life is for living I spent years on dialysis only able to wear clothes that could access my 'tubes' in my neck so while I am healthy I will dress as I please and sod 'the rules'

OnlyLovers · 22/09/2014 12:27

burnished, people might feel unsure about certain clothes more out of social pressure than because they genuinely don't feel uncomfortable about them. If people IRL as well as on here didn't try to lay down the law about what's 'appropriate' so dogmatically, others might not listen to their opinions but just wear what they liked instead.

noddy, frankly that woman sounds like a tosser.

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 22/09/2014 12:28

Noddy, who says tarty? That woman sounds really bitchy. I bet you looked great.

noddyholder · 22/09/2014 12:39

I know I am not tarty whatever that means quite the opposite in fact.

foxdongle · 22/09/2014 13:09

noddy she was Envy and what she happened was that you looked so fab, that her words came out all wrong!

Agree with Kylie about mutton.

Anyway yes I do wear denim minis, I have two, one shortish that I wear more in summer with bare skin (and fake tan) and another that is just above the knee, with buttons down, that I wear more in winter with thick tights. And I've just had my birthday, which means I'm now in my mid to late 40's. I'm 5'5 and slim 8-10- is that relevant? prob not.

foxdongle · 22/09/2014 13:10

oops - see just like mine did Wink

AstoriaMalfoy · 22/09/2014 13:18

Weirdly I dug out black denim mini this morning and was thinking the same thing . Tried it on with thick tights and boots and it looked great . I'm 40 by the way .

Fabulassie · 22/09/2014 13:41

I am 44 and I wear very short, tight skirts - with thick tights (and sometimes knee boots and leg warmers.) I have really great legs and I'm not putting them away just because of some number.

Fabulassie · 22/09/2014 13:45

"No minis after 40, fuck that. I'm 45, have a wicked body, tonnes of confidence, and wear mini skirts and have loads of short dresses. Oh and I have really long hair too."

Exactly!

There are certainly things I can't carry off anymore: anything baring my midriff is out (due to post-baby belly and the fact that I'm not a teenager anymore.) But I have a fantastic body with long legs and I don't mind showing it. You can show your figure without showing a lot of skin.

I don't have cleavage to speak of so it's easy for me to adhere to the "rule" that you have to pick between legs and breasts to carry off an outfit without looking tarty.

Floisme · 22/09/2014 13:51

Excellent: my afternoon off and a 'mutton thread' Grin I don't even think a denim mini skirt is a particularly young look these days. Most of the women I see wearing them are over 30.

However I think the issue is whether or not your legs can carry it off. If, as you say, they're not 'super toned' and you don't feel comfortable then possibly not. But it's not your age, it's your body.

noddyholder · 22/09/2014 13:58

I agree flo my ds is 20 and none of his girl friends wear them Its an older look any way

Floisme · 22/09/2014 14:04

I do hope someone will be along soon to tell us how wrong it is when your face doesn't match your legs Grin

BIWI · 22/09/2014 14:07

I can't stand this kind of casual ageism on Mumsnet. Angry

OP - do you like the skirt? Does it fit you? Does it - do you think - suit you? If yes, then wear the bloody thing and stop worrying about it.

And as for all of you who think we're too old once we're past 40 - please can you explain why?

Floisme · 22/09/2014 14:09

They can't explain it BIWI - that's why these kind of threads are so funny.

ilovehotsauce · 22/09/2014 14:16

I'm late 20s and I wouldn't, what's wrong with skinny jeans or nice skirts or dresses?

noddyholder · 22/09/2014 14:17

No BIWI flo is right I have never seen an explanation for it.

leedy · 22/09/2014 14:21

Are "skinny jeans, nice skirts, and dresses" the only appropriate wear for women over about 25 then?

Or have we over 40s entirely tipped into "something lovely and floral from Per Una that covers your crinkly knees and makes sure people respect you as one of their elders" territory? :)

leedy · 22/09/2014 14:25

Actually I have come up with a brilliant new street style look that will get me into the pages of Grazia/all over the blogosphere: NANCORE.

Currently wearing skinny jeans (age appropriate, phew) and a t-shirt, but as soon as I get home I'm into the crimplene relaxoslacks, a nice beige blouse, popsocks, and a pair of those fleecy slippers that zip up the back they advertise in the Sunday supplements. Understated. Sexy. NANCORE.

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 22/09/2014 14:32

I'm going to chop of my super thick beautiful fish tail plait, rock a bob, wear a knee length Boden skirt, ditch all my leather stuff and Dior bags and get a Cath Kiston bag and matching but not quite matching humongous 'mum' purse.

leedy · 22/09/2014 14:34

I think that bob might be a bit too youthful and swishy, Chicken, have you considered a nice tight wash and go perm? Also I hope that skirt covers your shins.

OnlyLovers · 22/09/2014 14:34

There's nothing wrong with them. The OP might even wear any or all of these things sometimes. At the moment, though, she's wanting to wear and asking about a denim skirt. Problem?

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 22/09/2014 14:43

Good point Leedy the 40's shouldn't be about swishing, or feeling confident and wanting to wear a different look everyday of the week. Apparently it's all about being tailored, whatever that is.

leedy · 22/09/2014 14:48

Nice wimple, anyone?

IgnoreMeEveryOtherFuckerDoes · 22/09/2014 14:49

Yes that will look good with tights and boots I'm 40.

Funny though because if it was a pair of jean shorts same length in summer nobody would bat an eye lid.

leedy · 22/09/2014 14:51

Oh I'm sure somebody would.

I suspect after a certain age some people think women shouldn't visibly have legs. Like Daleks.
