Shiny new thread for some shiny new perfumes (and classics and niche brands)

Oh I do love having a box of samples to rummage through when I can't decide what perfume I want to wear.

SOTD: Finally decided on Ambre Russe. I like it very much, though I daren't ever wear it to an AA meeting - everyone will think I've been drinking Grin

What is everyones favourite Frederic Malle out of interest? I've tried Portrait Of A Lady and it wasn't really me. I've heard Musc Ravageur is a little underwhelming and I'm expecting Carnal Flower to be death by tuberose (can't stand Fracas). Am intrigued by L'eau d'Hiver though. And Une Fleur de Cassie.

What say the Mumsnet perfumistas?

ToysRLuv · 15/08/2013 16:16

En Passant and Lipstick Rose. Then maybe Carnal Flower (which to me doesn't really resemble Fracas)..

ToysRLuv · 15/08/2013 17:59

Forgot to add that Musc Ravageur was OK. Nice enough, but nothing special. Didn't like Portrait of a Lady (if I remember right, it was a bit knickery and old-fashioned for my tastes). L'Eau D'Hiver is very nice, but nearly non-existent on my skin. Not worth a splurge IMO.

OneLittleLady · 15/08/2013 18:11

Have stolen DP's Hugo Boss Dark Blue. It's spicy yet sweet, lots of cedar, orange and I think sage. There's some other woody hint in there, but I'm not sure what it is. He has another bottle so he said I could have it if i really wanted it Grin I love mens scents, so different to the usual fruity floral aimed at women now

ToysRLuv · 18/08/2013 18:14

Everyone must be still in holiday mode Grin

Tried a sample of CiocoRossissimo today. I really like it. Thinking whether it is FB worthy.. my birthday is soonish, so need to think what I want as a present what I will buy for myself

wiltingfast · 19/08/2013 23:27

Ahhh, wafting about in l'air du desert marocain all evening, so gorgeous! I love it! Might consider forgiving mr tauer for carillon pour une ange but it will have to remain in isolation Grin

ToysRLuv · 20/08/2013 00:12

My Un Bois Vanille has gone off Sad. It's really alcoholic smelling now. Shite. It's happened almost overnight for no apparent reason. Oh well..

Wore Laura Biagiotti's Mistero di Roma yesterday and today. Really comforting vanilla and grapefruit.. Needed the familiarity now that DS is back at nursery. I'm always a bit on edge in the mornings, hoping that he will not start crying, or something.. Touch wood, it's been fine for the first 3 days.

Tried a sample of Muscs Koublai Khan today. OMG. First 15 mins or so, pure poo. I mean really! Then the poo sort of goes to the background and a lovely floral soapiness comes through. I would love it if it wasn't for the faint lingering memory of turds throughout the drydown. Ok. Not for me. Grin

ToysRLuv · 20/08/2013 00:13

Be careful with the bio-hazards, wilting! Grin

wiltingfast · 21/08/2013 09:57

Ha ha, it seems safe over there. V unintrusive Grin!

SOTD L'eau d'hiver, this is my third or fourth wear with this one. Don't dislike it but not hugely keen either. It's smells like baking with crushed almonds. V sweet, seems hardly there at first and then it ramps up a bit before starting to fade away again. Low key but persistent. Notes are just too high for me to really enjoy it. Don't get any specific note I'd identify as iris but some florals do come to the fore after about an hour or so of wear. That is probably the best bit of wear as the scent is fuller then. It has turned v gentle now. Almost soapy. Be happy to wash a baby with this smell!

Not a fb for me, I think I just like more complexity in a perfume. It is interesting to wear though.

Anyone fancy my sample? I've loads left as I got a 2ml spray from StC.

wiltingfast · 21/08/2013 09:59

Anyone used scentsamples on ebay? He has a 10ml decant of cuir de russie for about ?18 (ex postage) that I think I need to own... trouble is to maximise value I would just have to order a few more samples!

ToysRLuv · 21/08/2013 10:12

I agree about L'Eau D'hiver. It's very low key and high pitched in a funny way. Like dog whistle.. or something Grin

Yes, I have ordered from scent samples. The latest one was the Muscs Koublai Khan poo monster

Fuckitthatlldo · 21/08/2013 21:08

Oooh I'd love to try your L'eau D'iver Wilting. I've got tons to swap. Have a look at my list on page 22. I sent Toys the Vanille, Wazamba, Midnight Oud and Musc Maori, but I now have a few Annick Goutals up for grabs: Passion, Ninfeo Mio, and L'eau d'Hadrien. Take yer pick!

Fuckitthatlldo · 21/08/2013 21:12

Grin Toys, I love MKK. I've asked for a bottle for my birthday. I don't get poo, I just get a really sexy, animalic musk. Although I will admit, it is a little funky at first. Probably not one for the PTA annual dinner Grin

wiltingfast · 21/08/2013 21:59

Ooh fuckit, I'd love to try tabac blonde! Pm your details and I'll send off l'eau d'hiver.

Does your ds not like nursery toys? Mine is up and down with it. Dd now, she cries 'cause she's not going!

I'll have to try mkk some day but don't feel ready just yet!

ToysRLuv · 21/08/2013 23:46

Fuckit: I was very surprised at the extremely realistic poo note in MKK. I have to apply some to DH (on a day when he doesn't have any meetings Grin ) to see if it's only me who gets the poo effect..

wilting: DS was loving pre-school after the first weeks and a half, but soon after that came the summer break (he started in the middle of spring term), so he is now having another wobble. First 3 days skipped in, and yesterday cried when I took him there (school's already started in Scotland). A bit better today - no crying just a "no" and "but why?!" at the door. I'm already dreading drop-off tomorrow. It's so nerve racking. The funny thing is that he really enjoys it in the nursery and comes out all happy, having had a fun day. Confused

wiltingfast · 23/08/2013 11:25

Aw poor babe. You feel so sorry for them when you think of all the bloody school they have in front of them. I wouldn't like to be doing it again, no way!

So am off to Spain next week Grin, cannot WAIT! Any tips for perfume shopping in Spain? Will be north near Girona. Would love to pick up some gorgeous 'hard to get here' bargains.

Might buy in duty free too but selection will be v mainstream. Am hoping they will have Hermes at least. Probably too much to hope for Annick Goutal alas. Torn between Jardin sur le Nil and Jardin sur le Toit... anyone fond of either of these?

SO(yesterday) Azuree, thought I hated this initially, was nothing like the notes, totally wet, musty choking wood, awful. Sniffed away for a bit then forgot about it. Was wandering around when I kept getting wafts of something delicious, what was it? The azuree drydown! Gorgeous, sparkling citrus and wood and faint leather. Lasted really well, if I can just get past that first 30-40m it's wonderful. Will have to do some more testing.

Plus the bottle is lovely

ToysRLuv · 23/08/2013 11:32

Wilting: Oh, I hated school. Hope it's better for DS! Today he went in fine again... Confused

Sur le Toit is pretty wonderful! Sur le Nil is ok, but not special..

Sotd:Tuscany per Donna by Aramis. Nice sandalwoody floral.

Armadale · 23/08/2013 11:42

Hello perfume geniuses Smile

I am after recommendations for a perfume present for my friend, based on her old one which has been discontinued.

I don't know what the etiquette is but didn't just want to crash your thread and derail with all my questions so I've started a new one here if any of the experts on this thread have got time to have a look. Thanks

Fuckitthatlldo · 25/08/2013 09:31

Oooh. I'm blogger of the day today! (show off) Grin

ToysRLuv · 25/08/2013 12:47

Yay, Fuckit! Will have a look later..

SOTD: Nothing yet.. will probably try the Cuir Venenum sample.

ToysRLuv · 25/08/2013 12:55

Feminine hygiene? Grin There's no smell that bad that a squirt of Muscs Kouoblai Khan can't mask! Although you might end up from the frying pan in the fire (in my case anyway).. Grin

Fuckitthatlldo · 25/08/2013 21:45

LOL Toys Grin

They should start selling it next to the tampons!

ToysRLuv · 25/08/2013 22:21

You know what, they should sell Cuir Venenum next to the wine, in that case. It smells like the sludge you get at the bottom of a bottle bank. Wine and beer dregs.. I'm not saying that it's not good, though!

CointreauVersial · 25/08/2013 23:58

Helloooo fragranistas - you fell off the bottom of my "Threads I'm On" while I was on holiday.

I forgot to put on any fragrance today - felt naked!

I am so not buying MKK after the descriptions above. Grin

ToysRLuv · 26/08/2013 23:24

Hi, Cointreau!

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend MKK, but there are a few people here who like it, so it might not be pooey on everyone.. Smile

SOTD: Intrigant Patchouli. Beutiful spicy, balmy patchouli. Definitely worth a FB when (if) I've got enough money..
