Shiny new thread for some shiny new perfumes (and classics and niche brands)

SOTD: Tocadilly. Very nice and refreshing in this weather. Lilacs, cucumber..

Fuzzy: What was L'Air de Rien like? I'm curious, but I'm scared that It's going to be too knickery IYSWIM..

Fuzzybirds · 08/07/2013 14:26

Toys It is knickery, but it also has a gorgeous sweet hay/ ambery quality which I love. It reminded me of habanita (with added knickers [ grin] )

CointreauVersial · 08/07/2013 22:43

Snap, Fuzzy, I was wearing Eau de Cartier today too! Perfect for this weather, beautiful.

Looking forward to my mystery samples.....Smile

Fuzzybirds · 09/07/2013 10:07

Cointreau I owe you an apology- I was packing up the samples this morning and can't find no.5- I think I've left it at the in-laws so I've sent 1-4 and will send along the fifth as soon as I get it. Typical me, I always leave something behind!

Eau de Cartier is great in sunny weather, I find it quite cooling. SOTD is Tea Rose by the Perfumer's Workshop, rose, rose, rose! Great sillage and longevity and bargainous to boot Smile

coffeeinbed · 09/07/2013 10:16

I managed to lose this thread in my I'm on folder.

Linus, L'Artisan La Chasse Aux Papillons or La Chasse Extreme would be a lovely summer floral for you.
Also L'Eté en douce.

Annick Goutal Eau de Ciel is close as well.

wiltingfast · 09/07/2013 13:01

Aargh, I'm still in tuberose recovery, the mere mention of it makes me fell a bit ill Confused (tea rose has tuberose in list of notes)

I've retreated to EAs green tea for now.

My StC samples have shipped but the site says it could be 2 weeks before I get them Don't they know I need my Ninfeo Mio sharpish?!

wiltingfast · 09/07/2013 13:02

To make matters worse my cheapsmells purchases haven't turned up yet either Sad I ordered them WEEKS ago...

CointreauVersial · 09/07/2013 13:07

Wilting - my SOTD is Ninfeo Mio; I'm also contemplating a bigger sample than the titchy one I have.

I don't go near tuberose (eugh.....)

The StC order will be worth waiting for - it's all packaged up so beautifully it feels like such a treat to receive.

LinusDKD · 09/07/2013 19:40

Thanks coffee! Will try and see if I can find those scents and try them.

coffeeinbed · 09/07/2013 20:32

They are along the Fleurs d'Oranger, A La Nuit, Diorissimo lines, except more wearable in the heat.
You can also try the new Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Nerolia Bianca - it has a high pitched note in the middle, but if that doesn't bother you it's worth a try.
Widely available too.

ToysRLuv · 10/07/2013 12:12

SOTD: Amouage - Lyric Woman. Very oakmossy/gingery sharp beginning, but a lot better now. Getting the gorgeous spices and flowers. Surprisingly light - I thought it would be a sillage monster!

wiltingfast · 10/07/2013 12:49

How do you guage sillage? Ask the dh? Mine's nose isn't great!

CointreauVersial · 10/07/2013 12:59

I suppose I just judge sillage by how much I can smell my fragrance wafting around me as I go about my day. Sometimes (Dior Oud Isphahan) I can almost see a cloud of it, but with others I forget what I'm wearing.

My DCs are my harshest critics, especially when I get into the car, and will always point out if I'm a little "overpowering".

ToysRLuv · 10/07/2013 15:58

Wilting: I do what Cointreau does. With some perfumes you can smell it all the time. With others you have to take a deep sniff of your skin before you get anything. DH doesn't really comment. Maybe I'm quite shy in spraying stuff. I really stank of Vent Vert when I last put it on, because I poured (accidentally) a quarter of a mini bottle on myself. I felt a bit self-conscious picking DS up from pre-school.. Grin

wiltingfast · 10/07/2013 18:28

Ah ok, was eondering if you went around asking people! Lady at the chanel counter told me it's a sign the perfume really suits your skin if you can't smell it!?! (Was complaining that no 19 doesn't last on me).

evertonmint · 10/07/2013 19:19

Hello - can you help? I do not know how to pick a fragrance! I need to find a nice smell.

In the past the only 2 fragrances that have ever worked on me are Hugo Boss Woman and Bulgari. But I have worn them rarely and not at all for the past year really.

Any ideas on where I start?

Ta x

coffeeinbed · 10/07/2013 20:01
Hmm I think lady at Chanel counter was talking utter rubbish.

I'm usually careful when I spray, but some things just carry.
Fleurs d'Oranger is a really sllage monster.
Evertomint - best way is just go and try a lot. Take a willing child so you have two more wrists to spray on.

Don't buy a thing, write down what you like.
Repeat as necessary.

Fuzzybirds · 10/07/2013 21:34

I agree with you Coffee, I've heard this before but think it's a perfume myth. It seems kind of pointless, seeing as I wear fragrance pretty much only for my own pleasure (so if it's true then I'd prefer to wear perfume that doesn't suit my skin so I can smell it for longer!)

Wilting did you try the EDT or EDP? I generally find with Chanel that I prefer their EDPs as they last a lot longer on me.

Evertonmint yes go sniffing! It's so much fun (and free.) I think the ones you've mentioned are light-ish florals so maybe avoid the Thierry Muglers to start off with Smile

I had a freebie sample come today of Escada's Cherry In The Air. It's like cherry flavour sweets, with a bit of creamy marshmallow and a light muskiness. It sounds awful, but I kind of like it, although it didn't last very long.

Fuckitthatlldo · 11/07/2013 12:48

Hello everyone. Have been away for a bit so have a lot of catching up to do!

Have received quite a lot of samples recently - was a little disappointed by the Montale musks and ouds. I'd be interested to know if they have a base they use for all their perfumes as they all seem to have a similar whiff in the beginning. Liked Black Aoud once it settled down and you could smell the rose. And the Chocolate Greedy is fun, but a little sickly sweet to really wear much in real life.

I enjoyed Ambre Precieux by Maitre de Gantier very much - a really deep, expensive smelling amber. Better than Ambre Sultan in my subjective opinion. Well worth a full bottle purchase.

But the sample I loved the most was Musc Koublai Khan by Serge Lutens. After reading various reviews describing it as 'vile', 'fecal', and smelling of 'ball sweat', of course I had to try it Grin And I think it smells fantastic. A really sexy, animalic, slightly dirty smelling musk. Which is what musk should smell like as far as I'm concerned. Clean white musks always seem a kind of contradiction in terms I reckon, although they can be lovely in their way. But Musc Koublai Khan is definitely a perfume that separates the women from the girls. I've got a full bottle on my birthday list.

wiltingfast · 11/07/2013 13:54

Fuzzy I have the EdP. My skin must have v expensive taste ;)

Am a bit worried about my cheapsmells order. Just sent an email there to them now and then I thought I'd look and see if they had any interesting offers and there were no perfumes on its site whatsoever EEEK!

Now am in Ireland so may be running afoul of some EU laws or whatnot I don't know. I just hope my order turns up soon.

Am intruiged by the MKK fuckit but a bit nervous too! Where would you wear it? To bed? Grin

CointreauVersial · 11/07/2013 19:35

I received the mystery sample package this morning (from Toys via Fuzzy). Eeek, very exciting!

I tested No.1 today, but I am not mad keen - is it a Guerlain? It reminds me of L'Heure Bleue, but has too much white flower/powder for me.

ToysRLuv · 11/07/2013 20:20

Cointreau: It's not.. will PM you, so I don't reveal to wilting (who is next)..

I never thought of it as a floral - It really isn't floral at all, on me! But it does have flower notes.

SOTD: Fille en Berlin. I like the rose in it, but find it borderline nauseating. Weird. Hmm..

ToysRLuv · 11/07/2013 20:57

Fuckit: I sampled some Montales as well, and they are a bit samey. On me they are Windolene to start with.. I only like Chocolate Greedy, White Aoud and Aoud Greedy, so far..

Also, I luuurrrve Ambre Precieux, but I only have a 5 ml decant so far.

I have said it before, but Musc Koublai Khan is a bit scary. Haven't tried it yet, but you and Frugal are really selling it to me! Will sample soon and hope it doesn't smell of sweaty balls

florascotia · 11/07/2013 21:29

Hi Wilting Am sorry to hear that you've been having trouble with Cheapsmells. I ordered something from them at the end of June and it arrived safely here in Scotland, last week. So - at least from my experience - they do still exist and are functioning really rather efficiently. I wonder whether your particular package has got lost on its way from Guernsey? As you say, it might have disappeared into some customs black hole.

This is a link that - about 10 mins ago - showed perfumes in stock on their site: www.cheapsmells.com/productListing.php?category=1
It seems promising at first sight....

All this sounds as if I am somehow on Cheapsmells's side. I'm not; I have absolutely no connection with them. I'm just reporting my good experience of dealing with them recently, in the hope that it might be encouraging!

SOTD Guerlain Eau de Cologne Imperiale. Not subtle, but certainly refreshing. Probably heresy to say so - it's been around a vv long time, and in exalted company - but, for my taste, considerably too much Vetiver.

wiltingfast · 11/07/2013 22:24

Oooh! Blind sampling what a treat! Looking forward to it toys!

I'm sure you're right flora, I had an almost instant reply from cheapsmells and they said if I don't have the package this time next week, they will send it again. Bet customs have their hands on it, grrr >:(

May have to do a raid on the local chanel boutique, my sister tells me they offered her samples!!! And she only took one the wagon.
