Unbelievable Shock

And now extra time

It does not feel above board does it???

TheSleepingGiant · 18/01/2026 21:19

What a time to try a penalty like that Blush
Pleased it's gone to extra time, those decisions were harsh on Senegal. Never seen scenes like that.

burblish · 18/01/2026 21:34

The AFCON final is utterly bonkers. I couldn't believe the scenes after the (admittedly ridiculous) penalty decision. Such a shame to see. There have been a lot of teams complaining throughout the tournament about biases towards the host nation. It just all feels very tawdry. ☹️

burblish · 18/01/2026 21:44

OMG, how did he miss that open goal?!?!? That was almost as shocking a miss as the panenka penalty! Edited to say ok, replays show that Bounnou got his fingers to it - amazing goalkeeping. As you were, then!

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2026 21:57

Well done Senegal!!!

Senegal deserved the win after having their goal harshly ruled out and then getting that very soft penalty against them. But the actions of the Senegalese players and coaching staff after the penalty was awarded were not a good look, to put it mildly. (Kudos to Sadio Mane who didn't leave the pitch and was trying to get his teammates to come back on). Such a shame to tarnish an absorbing final between two fantastic teams in that way. Cor, I feel like I need a lie-down to recover from all the drama!

Brefugee · 19/01/2026 10:00

so glad i am no longer watching men's football internationals. That sounds infuriating.

My Boro supporting DH said some very unsavoury things about Newcastle yesterday - his hatred of Wolves (after the Boro manager left to coach them) could power our village for a week.

MrsMitford3 · 19/01/2026 12:07

I feel like they may need to look at the betting patterns for that match...
Follow the money...

I remember the 2002 World Cup and the bias that got one of the hosts to the semi-final.

And a certain goal in 1966 where I don't think the whole of the ball crossed the line.

Your DH may not get the opportunity to vent his feelings in person, as he may be supporting a Premier League team next season, unlike Wolves fans.

Brefugee · 19/01/2026 13:36

here's hoping!! (but he so rarely gets to matches, shouting at the TV or his phone is probably the best he's going to get. He's seen Wednesday in person more this season than Boro)

Scoobydoobydoo19 · 19/01/2026 17:05

From what I've heard from Middlesborough fans, Edwards leaving was a blessing in disguise. His replacement (whose name escapes me right now, sorry) is doing a really good job so far.

Brefugee · 19/01/2026 18:42

Oh yes, my DH is very happy with how it's going. But the whole thing leaves a sour taste.

There was also the ballboys trying to take Mendy's towel...Diouf did well keeping hold of it!

I couldn't believe what I saw seeing, especially when I watched back clips. Seriously, how did none of the match officials step in?

DuncinToffee · 19/01/2026 22:26

That was quite a goal from the young Brighton player, overhead kick.

He is a very talented young man. And clearly confident too!

TheNewGaard · 19/01/2026 23:07

I wasn't supporting either particularly. Brighton were diving around the area in the first half, and then Bournemouth dived for the penalty.

But then Bournemouth brought on Adli, and I remembered him stooping to try and headbutt Gabriel's elbow in one of the worst attempts at winning a penalty I've ever seen. And he didn't even get a yellow card - frankly he should have got a red for such a desperately awful attempt to cheat!

So I then cheered on Brighton, and - what a goal!

TheNewGaard · 20/01/2026 19:02

Come on Bodo/Glimt!

MrsMitford3 · 20/01/2026 19:06

And City down to 10 men.

TheNewGaard · 20/01/2026 19:58

Apparently that means that we've already qualified in the top 8 without even kicking a ball tonight!
