I've got enough good vibes to light up Blackpool Illuminations ... Sending some your way @Brefugee Come on Gladbach

TheSleepingGiant · 17/01/2026 17:48

After 10 games Gillingham have won a match! 2-1 down until the 91st minute against Newport (who didn't play like a club at the bottom tbf) and we ended up winning 3-2. A really enjoyable game.

Please can I also ask for some good wishes for Spurs today? They really do need to win. Given it’s against West Ham, they should pull it out the bag, but you never know with Spurs 😂😂 I have to say, I was quite hopeful for the first couple of months of the season, but I’m no longer feeling that way…

You jinxed it with the "should pull it out the bag" comment 😂I didn't listen to any of the game as attending Gillingham's match but can imagine 🙄

Brefugee · 17/01/2026 18:58

Wednesday, predictably lost. But i'm ok about that.
Gladbach drew 0-0 at Hamburg but had 0 shots on target and 0 shots that were not near target. Only the fact that Hamburg were equally awful and then unlucky saved us a point.

TheNewGaard · 17/01/2026 19:27

Well that was annoying. We didn't really look like we wanted it enough.

DuncinToffee · 17/01/2026 19:30

I think you should have had a penalty but beating Forest isn't for everyone Wink

Yikes, Glasner isn't holding back - leaving "by mutual consent" on Monday rather than at the end of the season, methinks.

At first look I thought it would have been soft, but with subsequent showings it looked much more deliberate.

But, as I say, we shouldn't have needed that, and we didn't look like we wanted it enough.

MrsMitford3 · 18/01/2026 08:54

I thought we looked tired.
Also a lot of chopping and changing the team-all good players but some combinations click better than others-this did not.

All of that aside we should have won this game.
You know when the opposition goal keeper is man of the match what that says.

Re the penalty. Steven Gerrard after the game saying it would have been harsh on Forest is not the reason to not give a penally.
The ball did hit his shoulder but he then used his arm to guide the ball to keep it in play to not concede a corner. The very definition of a penalty.
So yes I am frustrated.
We shouldn't have needed it but we also should have had the penalty.

Tiswa · 18/01/2026 09:27

What frustrates me is there is still NO consistency over decisions - in terms of actual points I think it evens out (for Arsenal with the Everton penalty) and it comes out in the wash for league places

but we are still seeing things given one day and not the next and the given some explanation as to why the Man City goal was disallowed but a similar Arsenal one allowed (both should IMO)

at least when it was just onfield decisions you could accept why somethings were spotted and some not we have just as much uncertainty now

I stand by the proposal that if you can’t make a VAR decision within a minute the onfield decision stands apart from offside where if it isn’t clear within a minute of looking at frames and lines the goal gets given because the spirit of offside was to make the game flow and not given an unfair advantage to attackers and I don’t think that is unfair to attackers.

VAR should be limited in its use- did the ball cross the line, was the foul in or outside the box, perhaps off the ball incidents. With a time limit for checking say of 15 seconds.

Or have the cricket idea that captains can only ask for it three times in a match.

The best option is to just get rid of it, the FA Cup third round demonstrated how much fans prefer no VAR.

Brefugee · 18/01/2026 10:37

since VAR isn't going anywhere my "solution" is: if the VAR has to use a calibrated line - the automatic decision goes in favour of the attacking side. (makes football more exciting by ruling out fewer goals)
And
All VAR decision making to be capped at 60 seconds, no pitch-side reviews by ref, if there is no decision in this time, the decision stays with the on-pitch original referee's decision.

I think it should be more - I think there are often clear cases where the referee has missed/doesn’t have the angle to see that a ball was handled or the defender got the ball, things that are clear to see within a minute of checking.

@Brefugee i agree entirely that is pretty much my thoughts!

it does need to be overhauled though and a time limit for me is perfect and the on field decision very much favoured.

this would still have inconsistency I have to say

I agree. I don’t see the point of the pitch side reviews given how rarely they go against the VAR

Still on a high today ...

Come on DFM and Everton.

TheNewGaard · 18/01/2026 18:25

Well done Everton!

And thanks!

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2026 18:31

I enjoyed that Grin

Didn't expect anything and we actually played well.

This thread is so funny-I do feel like I watch games differently-first thing I thought was I must pop on to congratulate and thank you @DuncinToffee !!

You did play well-much deserved!

JasonTindallsTan · 18/01/2026 19:10

Another snore fest away from home for Newcastle. Four 0-0 draws away from home this season now. Dreadful.

Tiswa · 18/01/2026 19:24

I will be honest these last two seasons have been dull - DS is now into NFL and the broncos/bills last night was proper edge of your seat stuff I haven’t seen in premier league football (barring some Bournemouth) matches since the 3 way title race of the 23/24 season

not sure if it is VAR, too many manager changes, FFP or what

at least this season has some relegation jeopardy I guess

I watch every match and I must admit this one was so boring I was shopping for clothes on my phone with only one eye on the dullest match all season. Whilst my DS ranted at me on WhatsApp as the time ticked down and we were no closer to scoring.
We need to learn where the net is and do some business this month given our dire injury list. Although the players on the pitch had the ability to win easily. We just didn’t.

TheSleepingGiant · 18/01/2026 19:25

I liked Everton's kit today, love pale yellow.

Afcon final now. I'd like Senegal to win, DS is team Morocco!

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2026 20:28

Ouch, that looks a nasty one.

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2026 20:55

Oh wow, why did that not go to the VAR? That was a goal.

OP posts:
DuncinToffee · 18/01/2026 21:00

And that is not a penalty, shocking decision
