If you could get rid of one Olympic discipline

So I guess around 4 years ago DH and I had a conversation like this
DH: "you know X was on earlier"
Me: "X is an olympic sport!? "
DH: "yeah has been a while"
Me: "what next? Pool? 10 pin bowling?'

Safe to say we can't remember what X is 😂
Just for fun: what sport do you think shouldn't be on there?

At the moment I'm thinking football because there's already too much football on TV and I'm not sure Golf is particularly thrilling 😂.

I'd probably eliminate the dressage after the recent Charlotte DuJardin debacle just in case other animals are being abused also.

It's not there yet, but I would not have 20 over cricket in the Olympics. Apart from the fact it is a joke format and not proper cricket, compared with the sport at elite level, countries in the Caribbean are in a way disadvantaged.

That's like saying we should get rid of gymnastics as gymnasts have been abused in the past, or that we should get rid of athletics because of all the doping. I think they did remove showjumping from the pentathlon for welfare reasons because it made very uncomfortable viewing. You wouldn't get rid of dressage and keep the other equestrian disciplines

I'm not particularly enamoured with skateboarding for example, but I'd prefer to add some new ones or bring back some older ones. Literature, sculpture and town planning were once events for example. Chuck in some darts as well. And add some challenge to existing events. Science means that the races are ridiculously close so they need to add in flip flops to the running or wrangling a toddler whilst doing the relay.

Walking is a joke. Full of cheating.

And boxing should be banned full stop.

Golf - really struggle to take it seriously as a sport. Game of skill yes but a sport ?

There’s none I’d remove - there’s plenty that I don’t find interesting, but others do.

Break dancing, skateboarding and all those that have big tournaments to shine in (football, rugby, tennis for e.g.)

I often wonder how that came about. Like did someone see all these runners and go: "Yeah yeah But you're trying to run fast! Bet I could beat you walking!'

Is walking really full of cheating? How do you know?

I would argue against all the people saying equestrian events, there are multiple huge equestrian tournaments world wide so removing it from the olympics would do nothing to help the horses. In fact having it on a world stage every 4 years is a good thing, it stops any abuse being hidden away in horsey only circles. And I say this as someone who has a nowhere near olympic level event horse.

The walking doesn't make sense, and I agree there is already to much football on TV

Well, I was joking really as walking should involve a flask and a cake stop.

However, the rules around race walking do encourage unfair advantage. The lifting rule - ie one foot must be on the floor at all time - only has to be visible to the naked eye and they train to circumnavigate this issue. They aren't technically walking, only giving the appearance of it. And you get warnings before being penalised so can get away with it for a bit.

Personally I love the more alternative sports. I love football, but it’s already got annual tournaments that are more prestigious than the olympics, same with tennis, golf and boxing. It’s been fascinating to watch the shooting, archery, athletics, sailing, gymnastics, skateboarding - I didn’t realise there was breakdancing! Skateboarding is a great sport to promote, most children have a skate park near and boards are relatively inexpensive compared to a lot of other Olympic sports.

I would ban boxing

And replace with ultimate frisbee

I do like the unusual sports that no one ever usually sees so I don’t mind watching a bit of skateboarding and so on.
