If you could get rid of one Olympic discipline

So I guess around 4 years ago DH and I had a conversation like this
DH: "you know X was on earlier"
Me: "X is an olympic sport!? "
DH: "yeah has been a while"
Me: "what next? Pool? 10 pin bowling?'

Safe to say we can't remember what X is 😂
Just for fun: what sport do you think shouldn't be on there?

At the moment I'm thinking football because there's already too much football on TV and I'm not sure Golf is particularly thrilling 😂.

Dressage

Because it is totally elitist and it's about the horse and not the person I think.

Netball isn't an Olympic sport... yet it is played up and down countries, it's played by millions worldwide, yet... not at the Olympics. My DCs played it, I played it. Apparently, it might be part of 2032 Australian Olympics because they play it a lot and are pushing for it.
Also another reason it hasn't been recognised is because men don't play it Hmm

Boxing 100%. We have some female boxers (Ireland) who have done well but I cannot bear watching it, in fact I've never seen them box.

I've enjoyed the gymnastics but feel a bit guilty. It's a sport that's replete with issues for young women and girls. Weight issues, physical and mental pressure, increasing pressure to perform difficult (and dangerous moves).

I've just finished the first two episodes of the Simone Biles doc on Netflix (eye-opening) and finished the book "The Little Communist Who Never Smiled" on Nadia Comanenci and just learned about Elena.Mukhina. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elena_Mukhina

It's actually a very dangerous sport at this level

Olympic football is pretty pointless. Both the men’s and the women’s tournaments have been going on in stadiums around France since before the opening ceremony and nobody is interested. The broadcasters are ignoring it. The written media is ignoring it. The top players aren’t competing. Team GB haven’t entered. It’s only a few weeks after the men’s Euros and before the start of the new season. I have absolutely no idea why anyone bothers. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@BustingBaoBun I hadn't realized netball wasn't there. That doesn't seem right.

Surfing
Skateboarding

Oh I love the skateboarding. I think it's a great addition. So much more interesting to watch than bloody swimming.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/08/2024 21:20

Boxing.

Agree

LonelyInDville · 05/08/2024 21:43

I actually love the odd events like skateboarding and breakdancing. I would eliminate equestrian and mainstream sports like football/soccer & tennis that you can watch anytime.

XelaM · 05/08/2024 21:45

Skateboarding where they all jump on the same rail with air pods doesn't look very impressive. People on YouTube/in the local park do more impressive tricks 🤷‍♀️

Dressage - not because of the recent video but because it's boring and the judging is bias.

ChocHotolate · 05/08/2024 21:46

3x3 mini basketball - 3 players per side shooting into the same hoops. Weirdest thing I've seen in these games

Yes, this is totally bizarre.

Puppiesmakemehappy · 05/08/2024 21:47

Skateboarding, BMX, break dancing.. anything that should be at the X Games.

SockQueen · 05/08/2024 21:49

Boxing. But I'd ban it as a sport completely.

I went to a lecture once (about head injuries) and they said that the aim of boxing is basically to give the opponent a serious enough head injury that they lose consciousness. If you had a sport where the aim was to, say, kick each other in the shins until one breaks, it would be instantly banned, so why is boxing different?

Topseyt123 · 05/08/2024 21:51

The speed walking race. It just looks utterly stupid.

Boxing. I just don't see going into a ring to beat each other up as a sport.

Most of the rest I do enjoy watching.

Thetraitor · 05/08/2024 21:51

Another vote for dressage and I’d like to see an addition of the egg and spoon

Aaron95 · 05/08/2024 21:52

Golf.

For a sport to be at the Olympics the olympic title should be the pinnacle of that sport. Golfers would rather win a major than the Olympics. Same goes for tennis - players careers are judged by winning grand slam tournaments not Olympic titles.

CardiffNameChange · 05/08/2024 21:55

Dressage

m00rfarm · 05/08/2024 21:55

The original Olympic sports included running, javelin, long jump, boxing, shot putt and a variety of equestrian events.

Boxing is now being excluded from the next Games, and I do not agree with equestrian events being removed.

As entertaining as the BMX is, I don't like this as an Olympic "sport", and neither do I think the basket ball and volley ball events meet the quality required for the Olympics. Same with skateboarding - I lost an hour watching a load of women trying to do a trick that only one person could do - what is the point of that?

I loved watching the tennis, and you can see how much it means to the players when they win (plus the number of players competing for zero income - GB does not pay its gold medal winners anything although most other nations so). However, apart from the finals, there were low numbers of people spectating and therefore maybe this needs to be excluded in the future (but only if some of the really rubbish events are removed first).

There seem to be a ridiculous number of sailing events, and the fencing seemed to go on forever. Plus the outrageous behaviour of some of the competitors in the fencing.

The football seems pointless when the teams exclude major players because of the IOC rules.

DandyClocks · 05/08/2024 21:56

Get rid of anything equestrian would be a good start. Nothing remotely sporty and athletic about it.

Topseyt123 · 05/08/2024 21:58

I would just add that the speed walking race just makes me think of Monty Python and the Ministry of Silly Walks. John Cleese was the Minister.

queenofthewild · 05/08/2024 22:04

If I was queen of the IOC, golf would be binned in favour of crazy golf.

Imagine the intricate themed courses. Marvellous.

anything with a horse and anything that is prettier rather than faster, higher, stronger, if you need a judge then it's not for me.

You do realise that the, erm, 'prettier' sports fit those categories far better than so-called traditional sports like football, tennis, and ... Erm.. golf...!

Not to knock these sports but objectively speaking

Holding the body in certain poses, and doing so with enough control to fit music of varying speeds requires an extraordinary amount of strength. Every movement you make depends on your ability to effectively carry and channel your bodyweight through muscles of varying strength.

The scoring code of points literally has all 3 elements in their purest forms , examples :

Higher - Elevation of the Jump demonstrating the desired shape.
Faster - the amount of technical elements that can be performed , dynamism in moving through them
Stronger - Power in handling the apparatus , and similar to the 'faster' if you're too weak you won't have enough control to move smoothly or jump high enough. Moves such as summersaults, standing on their hands etc also require strength.

Fair enough for people to prefer some sports over others. However, the sheer athleticism required should be acknowledged.

KnittedCardi · 05/08/2024 23:09

The first woman to win an Olympic event was the trainer of the horse who won the chariot race. So it was the trainer and the horse that won the medal rather than the rider. I rather like that.

I really enjoy the equestrian events, the triple is great, as is the jumping. I also enjoy gymnastics, for their sheer strength and agility, and triathlon, again for their mastery of speed, and endurance.

The highly paid golfers, tennis players and footballers shouldn't be included.

Oh, the canoe cross today was brilliant, mental, but brilliant.
