If you could get rid of one Olympic discipline

So I guess around 4 years ago DH and I had a conversation like this
DH: "you know X was on earlier"
Me: "X is an olympic sport!? "
DH: "yeah has been a while"
Me: "what next? Pool? 10 pin bowling?'

Safe to say we can't remember what X is 😂
Just for fun: what sport do you think shouldn't be on there?

At the moment I'm thinking football because there's already too much football on TV and I'm not sure Golf is particularly thrilling 😂.

The boxing. People hitting each other for sport. And male individuals being allowed to beat up women for a medal.

SerafinasGoose · 05/08/2024 13:35

None. But I would like to see the rules greatly tightened up and various thresholds required to be passed by the relevant sport authorities before they can be entered for any serious international competition, including the Olympics.

This includes animal welfare and stopping cheating males from participating in female categories.

I’m in favour of skateboarding: it’s fast, risky, takes great skill and is far more accessible for all young people to try for than the sports that rely on huge expense (anything equestrian, sailing etc) or the sports only played at public schools.

I'd prefer funding so all schools could afford 'traditional private school sports'. That would be more equal than banning for everyone.

RaraRachael · 05/08/2024 13:49

Race walking
Triple jump
Martial arts

GU24Mum · 05/08/2024 13:52

I'd remove the sports which already have very well-known and established competitions which probably overshadow the Olympics anyway - so, Tennis, Golf, Football.

And Beach Volleyball!

SanDimasHighSchoolFootballRules · 05/08/2024 13:52

Football, Golf and Tennis - they already have their own massive global events. Rugby gets a pass because it's sevens at the olympics.

Agree with pp's that the walking is also nonsense.

TheresMillionsSaidGeoffrey · 05/08/2024 13:54

Dressage.

KateDelRick · 05/08/2024 13:55

Football. There's enough without this.
Tennis, ditto
Golf.

Boxing. Horrible pasttime

This

Butterflyfern · 05/08/2024 13:56

Boxing here too.

But I also agree that football, tennis, golf all have better platforms elsewhere and shouldn't be included. Lots of professionals in those sports choose not to compete in the Olympics, so I don't think they are particularly valued. But we should keep the Paralympic versions. (And perhaps the women's competition in the case of football)

I would ban boxing

And replace with ultimate frisbee

This. To both.

Aquamarine1029 · 05/08/2024 14:03

All equestrian events and boxing.

willowtree66 · 05/08/2024 14:05

Synchronised swimming. Just pointless.

mirrorlife · 05/08/2024 14:06

Football, and I say that as a football fan. In fact, any sport where the Olympics isn’t the biggest competition for that sport.

PfishFood · 05/08/2024 14:06

I'd remove anything with horses really. I'm not sure any "sport" that requires training of animals to do things at your behest is a true sport.

Golf is definitely a sport, but these multi-millionaire golfers competing in a competition where many other competitors struggle to make ends meet month to month, makes it feel strange to me.

Finally, I'm also conflicted about any sports that have to be judged, rather than just based on most accurate, fastest, highest, etc. I know that takes out a significant proportion of sports at the Olympics, but something that's not 100% under the control of the sportsperson themselves is difficult.

That said, the TeamGB shooter than lost yesterday when the adjudicator said she'd missed a target when you could clearly see it breaking in two was very hard done by, so even the definitive sports get it wrong sometimes!

Agree with this list - generally speaking the Olympics should not be for those who are multi-millionaires.

Yes - I'd used golf in my answer for the same reason, but had forgotten the football and tennis. I'm glad TeamGB don't field a football team.

The Olympics is a time to shine a light on sports that don't often get mainstream attention.

I've loved watching the shooting particularly and BMX cross is fun to watch too.

The mountain biking was really good too.

8008Bee · 05/08/2024 14:13

Walking
Dressage (actually anything with animals)
Table tennis

Agreed. It's nice to see poorer nations participate, and I'm amazed at Ukraine being able to send a team! Kudos.

muddyford · 05/08/2024 14:17

Football
Tennis

They have enough coverage and money already.

Kendodd · 05/08/2024 14:18

I'd get rid of all sports were the Olympics isn't the pinnacle of achievement. So, football, tennis, golf, road cycling etc. The Olympics should be the biggest event in any sport, if it isn't, like in football, that sport doesn't belong. I don't mind all the minor sports nobody's ever heard of.

CurlewKate · 05/08/2024 14:20

It breaks my heart, but dressage.

TellySavalashairbrush · 05/08/2024 14:23

Tennis
Football
Golf

Blackcats7 · 05/08/2024 14:25

All equine sections. Horses don’t consent to this.
