If you could get rid of one Olympic discipline

So I guess around 4 years ago DH and I had a conversation like this
DH: "you know X was on earlier"
Me: "X is an olympic sport!? "
DH: "yeah has been a while"
Me: "what next? Pool? 10 pin bowling?'

Safe to say we can't remember what X is 😂
Just for fun: what sport do you think shouldn't be on there?

At the moment I'm thinking football because there's already too much football on TV and I'm not sure Golf is particularly thrilling 😂.

I would ban boxing

And replace with ultimate frisbee

Ultimate fucking frisbee. No, just no. Any sport that has to be prefixed with some kind of dynamic adjective to make it sound better then it actually is does not deserve a seat at the Olympics

Efacsen · 05/08/2024 16:02

Boxing - head injuries and risk of dementia - worldwide ban not just the Olympics

Equestrian events - animal welfare reasons - Olympics shouldn't be a circus for performing animals

Notreat · 05/08/2024 16:04

If I can have two I'll say
Dressage and boxing

I agree boxing shouldn't be encouraged as a sport.

I would be sad to see the equestrian events go, but there does need to be tougher regulation at the elite level. Most horses at the lower levels of competition are adored by their owners and very well cared for, but there does seem to be evidence that at the top levels horses are being pushed to the limit and training methods can be abusive, in at least some cases. The Charlotte DuJardin situation is really shocking because she came across as someone who really cared for her horses.

Yea, dressage and boxing, to echo many pp.

The IOC are reading MN - apparently boxing may be out.

From Sport Bible:

^”Following the controversy an International Olympic Committee spokesperson told the i: “As it stands, boxing is currently not on the sports programme of the Olympic Games LA 28.
“The IOC has made it very clear that it cannot again organise such Olympic boxing competitions.”^

The sport that risks being thrown out of the Olympics

The IOC is adamant boxing will not be at the 2028 Games unless it can prove it is 'credible' and 'well-governed'

Rhythmic gymnastics. Only a few countries still compete in it, it’s so boring. Would replace with team gym or acro which are much more exciting gymnastics events that are growing in popularity internationally.

Id also add frisbee. My son is a gymnast, his team mate represents GB in frisbee and team gym. They’re both really exciting!!

I don't disagree that rhythmic gymnastics has its problems. But boring it isn't - it's a lot like dance, they're so graceful and beautiful to watch with the music.

All those other things you mention have aspects covered in artistic gymnastics.

Personally I'd love aerial arts and pole dance included and as PP said, exclude sports that have other major events. Football for example ...

Ellmau · 05/08/2024 16:28

Boxing (and all the other fighting 'sports' while I'm at it).

Excellent news!

It's unbelievable that a 'sport' which involves hitting another person around the head attempting to knock them unconscious and resulting in known brain damage [sometimes death] is allowed anywhere in the world of modern sport

BeyondOlympicLevelProcrastinator · 05/08/2024 16:32

I'd say surfing, purely because it has to be held in a particular place to make it possible - it can't just be in or near the city that is hosting.

Makes it a bit silly imo "here is the Paris surfing, live from Tahiti" 🤷🏼‍♀️

MangosteenSoda · 05/08/2024 16:36

Football just because there’s enough of it already. Maybe 5 a side would be acceptable 😂

Hockey because I’m always disappointed when it’s on. Like right now 🙁

Football, and I say that as a football fan. In fact, any sport where the Olympics isn’t the biggest competition for that sport.

I agree that it should be for sports where the Olympics is the pinnacle event in the calendar. And I would have said that should include tennis. But seeing ND's emotion on winning (and his interview where he said it was for his country), and Andy Murray's sheer joy at playing (and the fact that Dan Evans dropped a large number of ranking points to take part) has made me rethink.

ACynicalDad · 05/08/2024 17:04

anything with a horse and anything that is prettier rather than faster, higher, stronger, if you need a judge then it's not for me.

I agree with that - and have rarely been as disappointed in anyone as I have am in Charlotte Dujardin. Nor, unfortunately, do I believe she's an isolated case.

I'm all for tougher regulation. If Dujardin's shone a spotlight on cruel practices in high-end dressage, so much the better if that means a better deal for the horses.

But just watch Laura Collett riding her beautiful eventing dressage test on London 52 (not the same as stand-alone dressage), for which she's just helped win us the team gold and also got the individual bronze. That horse went like a dream, ears pricked and forward, obviously enjoying himself.

Charlotte Dujardin has been eliminated before for blood on flanks. IMO, any history of that and would-be competitors should go through extra vetting and jump through more hoops; perhaps with periodic, unannounced inspections as to training practice. Two strikes and they're out - that is, permanently out. And I don't see why anyone needs to be using spurs.

A good shake-up is certainly in order but it would be a sad shame to see the baby thrown out with the bathwater.

Excluding anything with a judge takes out a LOT of sports...
Gymnastics, diving, weightlifting, boxing, Taekwondo, judo, artistic swimming, trampolining, breaking, equestrian, fencing (? not sure about that one), and wrestling. Seems harsh!

Ooh no keep the surfing. That's one I do follow, and I have do that on the internet with scheduled updates because most of the TV money and privileges in the UK go to football. It's a rarity to see it included in a mainstream sporting competition!

ShowOfHands · 05/08/2024 17:26

I'd like Tug of War back as well. Individual, pairs, team.

And a Mum and Dad's race.

Yogibearspicnic · 05/08/2024 17:27

Swimming races using anything other than front crawl, and there's too many multiple distances. What's the point in races for using different techniques just to do the same thing? If the same person can win the 200, 400, and 800m then there's too much overlap. You might be able to get a runner who could win the 100 and 200m, but not the 400m.

WhatMe123 · 05/08/2024 17:28

The football 🙈 who wants to watch Olympic football

FadedRed · 05/08/2024 17:28

Boxing, golf, football, beach volleyball, tennis, for all the reasons stated repeatedly above.
Half the swimming and cycling - too many at different distances, especially that strange cycling one where they have to go really slowly without falling off then suddenly break into a sprint (can’t remember what it’s called).
And very controversially, I would get rid of the 100 metres sprint - far from being the ‘epitome of sporting prowess’ and all that bollocks, there is a ridiculous amount of build-up & hype etc when it has become impossible to actually see who’s won without using the technology that is not applied fairly across other sports (e.g. gymnastics, shooting where dubious decisions have been made).
Or maybe I’m taking this thread too seriously and need to chill a bit? Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 05/08/2024 17:28

Boxing. Should be banned full stop.

The reason it’s called “ultimate” is because frisbee is a trademark, and cannot be used in the official name of the sport.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 05/08/2024 18:40

Skateboarding. So dull. I said it this year and then a Facebook memory came up from Tokyo 2021 and I said it then as well so at least I'm consistent. BMX on the other hand is brilliant. Which I also said in 2021.

I like this.

We could add cheer too. That seems to be a big thing currently and is fascinating to watch!

I'd like to see something like beach ball added instead of football and tennis. Proper summer sports that anyone can have a go at cheaply. You even really need a beach 😂

selfesteemfan · 05/08/2024 19:08

Boxing and golf 💯
