Not sure how it is with televised football in the UK now but in Germany, when it went to pay tv, it was: first match of the Bundesliga each season was on free tv because it's always the team that won the league the year before, they play on the Friday.
And all the other matches were on pay TV (was called Premiere at first, then Sky took them over)
And it was expensive-ish but you could see all the football. all 3 leagues, and the cup. Then the government had a massive brainfart and made the Bundesliga sell the matches to 2 TV (subscription) services. So you paid the same on sky but only got half the matches, and if you wanted to see all the matches you had to fork out for the other broadcaster too. It is still like that with only a few on free TV (the first match of the season, and the cup final). and everyone hates it
And now the league is going to take on an investor and have told fans "no, it won't mean we get English or Spanish style football where the matches are spread all over the week." but nobody believes them so there are a lot of fan protests. It is going to get "very interesting."
