Not sure how it is with televised football in the UK now but in Germany, when it went to pay tv, it was: first match of the Bundesliga each season was on free tv because it's always the team that won the league the year before, they play on the Friday.
And all the other matches were on pay TV (was called Premiere at first, then Sky took them over)

And it was expensive-ish but you could see all the football. all 3 leagues, and the cup. Then the government had a massive brainfart and made the Bundesliga sell the matches to 2 TV (subscription) services. So you paid the same on sky but only got half the matches, and if you wanted to see all the matches you had to fork out for the other broadcaster too. It is still like that with only a few on free TV (the first match of the season, and the cup final). and everyone hates it

And now the league is going to take on an investor and have told fans "no, it won't mean we get English or Spanish style football where the matches are spread all over the week." but nobody believes them so there are a lot of fan protests. It is going to get "very interesting."

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 17/02/2024 10:55

@Brefugee

Yes. the same thing happened here. We just had Sky and then the EU decided that there needed to be more competition, so we now have to sign up to two broadcasters and pay double!

They are absolute idiots.

I actually like the matches spread over the week. What don't you like about that? Is it because the evening ones are difficult for people to get to?

MrsMitford3 · 17/02/2024 15:28

My DIL was at the women's game and now at an Arsenal pub watching the mens.
So they can show it?

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 17/02/2024 16:54

Not usually. You often find it available at pubs near the ground though. Not sure how legally...

Oblomov24 · 17/02/2024 16:58

Spurs lost to wolves. Awful.

Yeah that's what I was thinking...
It looked like it was a great atmosphere there-everyone seemed to go straight from the Emirates.

What a day to be a Gooner

Last minute equaliser from Matt Richie of all people today. We weren’t good enough again. Injuries have destroyed our season. No recognised striker available, only 3 fit midfielders, one of whom is on 9 yellow cards so is effectively playing at 60% and Dan burn getting skinned every week at LB.

Just Arsenal away next week. They’ve not been scoring much recently so that’s something 👍🏻😂

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 17/02/2024 18:44

Oh and Schar has gone off after the game today using his shirt as a makeshift sling. You couldn’t write our injury luck this season. Callum Wilson is out for 12 weeks with a broken tit ffs 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 17/02/2024 21:17

Yep, good week for Arsenal. Hopefully Arteta's doing the the Pep thing of putting a run on at this time, as we seem to be hitting some kind of form.

Oh. Yeah. Don't do that "hope" thing. That never works out...

We're all for Arsenal as PL champions here on the red side of Manchester 👍

I want matches I can get to - and get home from. I get up early for work and a match starting at 20:45 is way too late.
It should be on Saturday afternoon.

That's nice to hear. If you could please beat Liverpool and City for us in the next few months it would help a lot.

burblish · 19/02/2024 18:48

Best wishes to Roy Hodgson - a gentleman and scholar of the game. I hope he puts his health first now and enjoys a well-earned retirement.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 19/02/2024 19:33

Hear hear!

The thing is because we have played so well recently, I am actually optimistic for once, but I don't think that is a good thing.

I remember a few years ago when we played Monaco and everyone expected us to win and we didn't.

I think that we play better when we aren't expected to win.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 21/02/2024 17:49

What he said! I feel quite confident about tonight, but that can come back to bite you in the bum...

MrsMitford3 · 21/02/2024 18:05

I agree-it's the hope that kills you.

Playing as we have been we "should" be hopeful but I never am 😂

The team seems in such a good place-I hope it's a wonderful night.
And the mum in me hopes the fans over there are pacing themselves as the pre-gaming looks pretty full on.

We were at the away game in Milan-DC were pretty young but really fantastic experience!

Brefugee · 21/02/2024 18:21

Big news in the German football world today. There have been discussions about getting an investor into the league - there have been fan protests, and now it seems the potential investor has pulled out.
That's it in a nutshell. There is a lot more background, but that's it.

MrsMitford3 · 21/02/2024 19:49

@Brefugee what would that mean?

And although not drinking in the week I will admit to pouring a large glass of wine...
COYG

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 21/02/2024 21:56

Well that was inevitable...

burblish · 21/02/2024 22:03

Wow - 10 senior players injured (7 of whom are either nailed on starters or guaranteed to come on as subs), 0-1 down at halftime, and Liverpool somehow managed to win 4-1. Just incredible. With 9 games in 30 days, though, I am so terrified of anyone else getting injured.

MrsMitford3 · 21/02/2024 22:04

omg

so bloody awful

they were diving the whole match-the referee def had main character vibes as blew up everything. no flow at all.
just awful

so we need to smash them at the emirates

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 21/02/2024 22:07

Well, we weren't at the races tonight.

Hopefully we will have a better referee at home.

The Bundesliga said the investor would put in an amount over 20-25 years to be shared by the 36 clubs in the 1st & 2nd divisions. So per club not that much.

The issue the fans have is that the German 50+1 model of ownership gives the fans a say in club decision making. No club polled their members (including mine, I'm cross about that) so the protests were about that. It's a slippery slope argument.

There was also talk of some matches being played abroad, and moving more kick-off times. The latter NEVER plays well here. We've managed to stop Monday league games. But next season a 3rd Sunday Bundesliga match is coming in. At 7:30pm. Fans aren't happy because of travel and one less on TV (unless you pay)
