I loved that. It was a fabulous game. (I'd be saying that even if I wasn't English).
Had to bob out few mins towards the end of the second half, praying for the Lionesses to maintain 2-1. I literally punched the air when they got the third goal.

I totally agree with @WeetabixTowels ' sentiments. DD has been playing grassroots football for 5 years, since she was 7. The girls always get the flooded pitches, the really early KO (to clear the pitch for the "proper" matches), the bottom of the barrel of any amenity going.... all the girls on the pitch will have overcome being secondary to everyone else so many times. Look at them shine now.

DownNative · 16/08/2023 14:06

Well done, England! Now to win it!

Hemp's pass to Russo was fantastic and Alessia's finish faultless. Australia's goal was smashing too!

Some cracking goals in this WC. Spain's winner crashing in under the bar was totally crazy!

England v Spain - get your treats in! 🍿

Parky04 · 16/08/2023 14:09

Hemp was fantastic. James available for final but won't start and rightly so.

I’m actually quite emotional.

I’ve been following England women’s for over a decade. When the stadiums were empty and they players weren’t even close to being household names. It used to really frustrate me that people didn’t even know a women’s team existed.

Just been to our local where people of both sexes and all ages, crammed in together to support the Lionesses and cheer the way they do the men.

wonderful

This, so much. There's been huge injustice done to women's football over the decades and it's almost unbelievable the vast strides it's made in the last few short years. But it still annoys me the way there are flags hanging everywhere when it's a male competition, and when the men's world cup is just called 'the world cup', and when I see the vast numbers of male managers now in the women's game when you know exactly what the response to a female manager running one of the men's clubs would be. There's some bitterness mixed in with the huge joy and excitement.

Congrats England. But like the rest of Australia I’ll be cheering for Spain in the final!

Cheer for who you like. Barring us imploding, it's coming home to England on Sunday 😘

Nice.. I've found the Aussie spirit quite vile at times. There SM have been spiteful constantly. Never pays to be unkind to others. You do as you wish and chew on a lemon whilst your at ti

@rockingbird SM?

It's quiet at the moment because of the world cup. And there will be a new thread for next season Football

Great match, England. Bad luck Australia - but two out of three ain't bad! You should be proud because getting to the semis in a really competitive competition is progress. Beaten by a better team with a better coach.
England look like they can match anyone. We were so professional as well. I don't mean the gamesmanship, I mean staying calm when Australia equalised, not forcing passes, not overreacting to anything. We really do look like champions. England Vs Spain on Sunday!

Am Scottish. Cheering for the lionesses

That's the spirit 😀 I always shout for Scotland when they're not playing against England. I know all the words to Flower of Scotland too 😘

WeetabixTowels · 16/08/2023 16:20

I haven’t noticed any spiteful posts from the Matilda’s social media?

Bluejaybean · 16/08/2023 17:35

Yes!

Watched with my 6year old son who loved it.

WeetabixTowels · 16/08/2023 21:29

Watching the highlights on TV, feeling so proud!

I also made it in the tele - our local TV channel was in our pub and there’s me at 6pm resembling something that looks like a potato jumping up and down nearly squashing my children 😂😂

WeetabixTowels · 16/08/2023 21:34

What I love about this team is that there is no one carrying the whole team - they are all stars shining equally, and without Mead, James, Williamson, Kirby we still deliver a strong game. The depth of talent is unreal and the fact any combination of line up delivers a top performance shows just how brilliant and together this team is.

I hope that this humility stays with the Lionesses even as they become more and more successful. I sometimes worry England Men’s are too well paid to give a shit anymore

Just on recognition, I was looking at the England women's team page on wikipedia and what I found remarkable was how many players from previous years are genuinely very well known to the public (most definitely among general football followers).

Hope Powell (very well known as a female manager)
Kelly Smith (former Eng record goalscorer, she also appeard in football magazines (Match, Shoot etc.)
Ellen White (current Eng record goalscorer)
Rachel Yankey
Alex Scott (now on Match of the Day etc.)
Karen Carney (always on radio/tv doing commentary)
Jill Scott (won IACGMOOH)
Faye White (appears on Sky Sports News doing commentary)
Eniola Aluko (lots of media work, you can hear her voice in the Messi video below)

And theres now loads from the current team.

Anyone of these could appear on Question of Sport and they'd be known.

Kelly Smith for me will always be the poster girl of English womens football. An article on Gazza or Lineker for example would then be followed by one on her, this was common in Match and Shoot magazines.

The womens game has exploded over the last four/five years but there has always been some presence before that.

Been playing ' three lions ' today
Please tell me it's not going to Spain on Sunday ?..
I really want the girls to win. (If only to put the men's game to a bit of shame !)
I know it's only a game.

Hemp was fantastic. James available for final but won't start and rightly so.

Hemp wasn’t that great in the first match, Lauren James comes in for the next 3 and plays amazing, gets suspended, hemp was like ‘hold my beer’ and has been fantastic since. Such a talented bunch of ladies… some of them still very young so got a couple of world cups still in them..

Mindovermatter247 · 16/08/2023 22:38

It’s Millie brights 30th birthday the day after the final…. Fingers crossed we win it so she can really celebrate.
lucy bronze 3rd World Cup …. 3rd time lucky maybe?

A lot of the England men have been fully supporting the lionesses tbf …. Although the ladies may have 2 major titles in 2 years and the men still haven’t won anything in 57 years and counting.
the men will never win when Gareth picks his core 5, some of who haven’t even played team football properly in months. His excuses are shoddy for why he don’t pick people that have been outstanding. I like Gareth, he’s got us further than previous managers but I think it’s time for a change…

Bluejaybean · 17/08/2023 07:33

I think that by saying "look how well the women are doing compared to the men" just invites men to put women's football down in response. Meanwhile the England male players are actually really supportive towards the lionesses. It's better to just talk about how great this is for the progression of women's football and how the lionesses are bringing so much joy, nobody can argue with that.

I agree. Same at club level. In addition, it's (unintentionally) disrespectful to the women's team because it's making their successes somehow all about the men.

It's great to demand equity - same opportunities, facilities, coaching and other support, but basically men's and women's sport are parallel universes. I listened to a really interesting podcast about women's football shirt sales (I know that sounds dull, but it really wasn't!) which tangentially discussed the differences in the fan bases of men's and women's football. So even on that level, they are different. It will be interesting to see if this changes as the women's game grows.

Ladybrrrd · 17/08/2023 08:53

I wouldn't knock Southgate too much. Like you said, further than ever in a very long time, and actually more wins than ever. England have only lost 14 of 81 games, won 49. A mistake putting those 3 young lads out for pens with no play time, but otherwise he did so well.

Sarina is just marvellous. I'm just so excited that women footballers are household names, and all that means for the future of the sport in general.
I was even half tempted to kick a ball about myself but I'm beyond malcoordinated 😂

Can I ask what the podcasts name is, @BellaAmorosa ?
