Because people within his nation embraces his win rather than put the boot in..

And what's his nation?

I've heard the nation a lot this week on the BBC. What is the nation? Just perhaps a wee bit of acknowledgement that they mean the English nation is enough to not antagonise people quite so much!

That's nothing against the players - they have done brilliantly.

But they play for England. Murray represents UK so he is representing the 4 nations.

OppsUpsSide · 12/07/2021 00:30

We’re you saying the England team would have become the British team if they’d won?

FootballisgoingtoRome · 12/07/2021 00:31

@Fandangoes

1966 was proof that it’s possible a team from our little nation can win, if it had been ANY of the teams the commentators would still have been talking about it. What do you want them to do not mention it because the other teams are jealous it wasn’t them and they have never managed it!
Little nations there is very few countries in Europe with a population as high as England’s and even those are only a few million more. A country as big as England should be winning all the time .

They weren't representing UK.
TracyBeakerSoYeah · 12/07/2021 00:32

I've reported HidingFromTheChildren too.
It's absolutely disgusting what they've said.
If it's down to statistics re individual players then they should have said not a lump it altogether racist remark.

DoucheCanoe · 12/07/2021 00:32

@ssd, yes and that's something I commented on at the time.

But Andy Murray doesn't represent Scotland. I'm proud to be British - born in Scotland.

ssd · 12/07/2021 00:32

Oh bloody hell

Im off to bed

ssd · 12/07/2021 00:33

That was to oops

Well it seems he does when he loses........

It is possible to be proud to be British but still see the bias of it all !

England played well but Italy were absolutely the better team and deserved the win. Surprised it got to penalties as they were stronger throughout but particularly in the second half.

DoucheCanoe · 12/07/2021 00:38

As I said, I do and did see the bias but England are the only team able to represent the home nations because none of the others succeeded!

I don't watch tennis so I've no idea if Andy Murray's nationality changes back and forth depending on his score but I do remember the fuss about him suddenly becoming British.

OppsUpsSide · 12/07/2021 00:38

@ssd I have not a fig what your point is now! Never mind, good night

Tavannach · 12/07/2021 00:42

I'm Scottish and so disappointed in how the Scots have behaved!! Absolutely rubbish and such bad sportsmanship.

Eh?
What you on about?
The Scottish fans were delighted to be taking part in a major tournament and were well behaved.

Italy's taken it home

Yes and actually tonight I have seen more Scots wish them well than ever before.

I'm in England so I am most definitely not anti English. I just think it's important for some to realise that it's not just bitter nationalism that makes many Scots want England to lose (although the shocking Headline in National sugges so) but its a culmination really bad coverage primarily from the BBC over the last 55 years plus shocking media too where before a ball has even been kicked the team has won the competition. That's what I think many find annoying. But actually it's a bit of a Death Knell for the English team so they are the ones who suffer the most from it.

DoucheCanoe · 12/07/2021 00:48

@OppsUpsSide I can't speak for ssd but I took it to be that in media terms other home nations need to prove their worth before being accepted to represent Britain.

Basically, had Andy been English he'd be a winning Englishman.

But as he's Scottish he's a winning Brit instead.

NCkitchen · 12/07/2021 00:51

*AlpineBell

I was quite shocked at the Italian players constantly assaulting English players. Quite unsettling to watch such dirty playing*

There was one very clear dirty foul when Chiellini grabbed Saka's shirt. But other than that it wasn't that bad!

Jorghinio's studs on Jack Goulash was accidental I think

I can't believe the amount of diving from the England squad this tournament.

Fouling and diving from all sides is all part of of game it seems!

Andy Murray has always been a British Citizen. That's his nationality. When he was a young up and coming player he was very vocal about being Scottish, and the fact that he always supported whoever England was playing against. This didn't particularly endear him to English tennis fans, or the English in general. Though I never remember the Wimbledon crowds cheering for his opponent as, in his own words, he would do if the roles were reversed. He went to the Olympics as a Team GB member and some people took the piss because he was happy enough to be British for that. He gives as good as he gets does Andy. That's what pp was referring to I imagine.
nattiee · 12/07/2021 00:56

It can't go home to Italy as football originated in England

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 12/07/2021 00:56

@NCkitchen love it - Jack Goulash 🤣

OppsUpsSide · 12/07/2021 00:58

@DoucheCanoe thanks for explaining I was genuinely confused.
I thought it was different re tennis and Andy also got a say, I don’t know though.
It’s a funny one for me because I am half a mix of the GB nations and half I don’t know what, not exactly ‘English born and bread’ which is same as the England team actually. But although I would call myself British I only feel properly accepted in England where everyone seems to be a mix of something.
If I had a choice I’d rather be Welsh!

Wakeupin2022 · 12/07/2021 00:58

Andy Murray is British. He's not English. I think he's proud to be British.

He got asked an awkward question. Why would him not supporting England make him any less British.

There may be a lot more English that other nations, but they have no greater right to be British than me........

Fandangoes · 12/07/2021 00:59

That is pure speculation and typical Scottish xenophobic tripe! As it has been mentioned already Andy Murray was representing the UK not Scotland. And English people fully supported him and cheered him on. My Facebook feed is full of Scottish people accusing the English squad of being poor losers for removing their medals. The irony is astounding!
