This is the feedback thread for the 11 Mumsnetters who attended an exclusive DFS event in London to be matched to their ideal sofa.

Here’s what DFS has to say: “We know that choosing a sofa that’s right for you is something which everyone wants to get right, but it can sometimes feel like a challenge. At DFS, we have nearly 50 years of experience designing and hand-making sofas and want to make the sofa buying process as simple as possible. ‘Match Made at DFS’ was a chance for Mumsnetters to see how simple sofa shopping can be, when you consult those in the know.

On Wednesday 19th July we invited 12 Mumsnetters along to be ‘Match Made’ to their ideal sofa. During the match making process the Mumsnetters and DFS sofa experts chatted in detail about their sofa requirements. From colour and style, to product protection and financing, the Mumsnetters put the know-how of the DFS experts to the test. At the end of the match making process, the Mumsnetters were given the chance to choose the right sofa to meet their needs and suit their lifestyle.”

See the DFS 'match-making' process in action with their 'Ultimate Sofa Buying Guide' video here:

Attendees, please answer the following questions on your experience at the event

  • What did you enjoy most about the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Do you think that DFS has a good selection of sofas?
  • What did you think of DFS before attending the event?
  • Did your view of DFS change after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Would you recommend DFS to a friend after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?

Non-attendees, please answer the following question to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher.

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Thanks and good luck!

Non-attendee - The most important thing is if it is both comfy and supportive. No point it having a sink into softness if you can't get out of the thing and the cushions lose their shape after a month!

The most important things are that it is comfortable and it is suitable for the room it is going in, size, shape, etc.. :)

Size. Will you actually get it into your house??

Chose a neutral colour black, white or brown in case you re-decorate your room. You don't want the sofa to clash with the decor.

RueDeDay · 08/08/2017 16:49

Non-attendee here... Making sure it fits (both through the door and to the style of your room) and is comfortable! I have a DFS Zinc and love it, have had lots of compliments.

Practically - for me this is definitely the main factor, I have 3 dogs and a cat who moult horrendously. So a beautiful fabric sofa may look nice but it certainly won't when it's covered in dog hair, so leather would be more practical! Why make life more difficult, buy something that's practical and will withstand your household

veegstez · 08/08/2017 16:56

I'd say not to overspend and only buy what you can realistically afford. Oh and make sure its comfortable!

MAForster · 08/08/2017 16:56

As we get older, the height of the seats above the ground and the firmness of the cushions have become much more important so that we can get up from the sofa easily.

How quickly the cushions will go flat and be unsupportative is my biggest concern

I think the most important thing to remember is the space you have at home. It is easy to decide on a sofa when it is in a large showroom that you think will fit your house and than find it's far too big.

Yaracuy · 08/08/2017 17:07

Apart from the obvious reason, that being the price. The next important issue about a sofa is that it does not cave in. I have made that huge mistake and now I'm stuck with it.

hdh747 · 08/08/2017 17:11

The most important thing is to make sure it will fit, closely followed by trying it out for comfort.

The most important thing for me is to check it's hard wearing because sofas get a lot of wear. Also that the material is easily cleaned in case of accidents. For me, I find the sizes difficult to imagine as well, in my actual living room how big the sofa will look.

Make sure it has the proper fire safety labels.

The most important thing when buying a new sofa is to make absolutely sure it is comfortable and it fits in your room.

glennamy · 08/08/2017 17:22

Comfort is far more important than style, lay on it, sit on it, in fact anything you do on it at home test it out! :)

Funkyferret · 08/08/2017 17:30

Non-attendee. For me, it's comfort and unlike a lot of people I hate a soft, squishy soft. It's got to be firm and supportive.

HELENSCRESCENT · 08/08/2017 17:34

Non tester - I think the most important thing is to remember what it is going to be used for and by who. There's no point choosing a small cream velvet sofa is you are a family of five with messy children! 😆

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?*

Does it stain easily and is it washable? Our sofa is too light and the kids have it absolutely filthy. We're gonna have to pay to get it professionally cleaned.

ThemisA · 08/08/2017 17:38

Comfort and size (will it fit through doors and in your space). Quality of craftsmanship and materials.

rupert23 · 08/08/2017 17:43

Non attendee .the most important thing i would look for in a sofa is the quality of it.i need to think how practical colours would be with my kids jumping on it everyday.it needs to be tough stain proof and look good .

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Space - Will it fit where you want to put it
Quality - It needs to a decent quality to last
Comfort - Obviously the more comfy it is the better

I take a long time researching before I buy , I have kids so I consider the colour and how easy it is to keep looking smart also comfort is big deal will it support my back and neck and can we lay out on it.

ForTheSnarkWasABoojumYouSee · 08/08/2017 17:52

Non-attendee: Washability! I wish o could blame the DC and cats, but I'm an incorrigible coffee spiller and ink dropper myself.

farhanac · 08/08/2017 18:00

Non attendee - size and shape right for the space
