This is the feedback thread for the 11 Mumsnetters who attended an exclusive DFS event in London to be matched to their ideal sofa.

Here’s what DFS has to say: “We know that choosing a sofa that’s right for you is something which everyone wants to get right, but it can sometimes feel like a challenge. At DFS, we have nearly 50 years of experience designing and hand-making sofas and want to make the sofa buying process as simple as possible. ‘Match Made at DFS’ was a chance for Mumsnetters to see how simple sofa shopping can be, when you consult those in the know.

On Wednesday 19th July we invited 12 Mumsnetters along to be ‘Match Made’ to their ideal sofa. During the match making process the Mumsnetters and DFS sofa experts chatted in detail about their sofa requirements. From colour and style, to product protection and financing, the Mumsnetters put the know-how of the DFS experts to the test. At the end of the match making process, the Mumsnetters were given the chance to choose the right sofa to meet their needs and suit their lifestyle.”

See the DFS 'match-making' process in action with their 'Ultimate Sofa Buying Guide' video here:

Attendees, please answer the following questions on your experience at the event

  • What did you enjoy most about the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Do you think that DFS has a good selection of sofas?
  • What did you think of DFS before attending the event?
  • Did your view of DFS change after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Would you recommend DFS to a friend after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?

Non-attendees, please answer the following question to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher.

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Thanks and good luck!

Non-attendee - most important thing is that the back is high enough so I don't end up with a sore neck when watching TV

From experience, the most essential thing to remember is the dimensions of your room and also the measurements of your doors and hallways.

Having to pay a specialist to have two brand new sofas taken apart on your front lawn and reassembled inside your house is not something you ever forget (or live down)!

It is important for me to remember I have 2 heavy handed children using the sofa. It needs to look good but also be robust!

Most important thing has to be comfort. Closely followed by dimensions and durability. How it looks is also important but without comfort it would be meaningless Smile

asuwere · 08/08/2017 19:46

Non-attendee:
Most important things are size, price, practicality and comfort - I don't think I could say just one of those things as they are all equally important. Choosing a sofa is difficult with messy, jumpy children!

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?
that it fits into the space you have.
fld14 · 08/08/2017 19:59

I think the most important thing is back support as I suffer with back pain.

MrsDramaQueen · 08/08/2017 20:07

What I need from a Sofa, is one that is hard wearing, and also one that is easy to clean or white down with the kids. They are always spilling something. To be honest so am I.

Marg2k8 · 08/08/2017 20:11

Non attendee. Make sure you have space for where you want to put it and make sure it will go through your front door (or back door).

raspberryblush23 · 08/08/2017 20:20

Non attendee: the practicalities really- the size, durability and how easy to clean especially if you have kids.

MrsPeppercorn · 08/08/2017 20:21

I actually have a DFS sofa (well, two)... and I love it. For us, the most important factor was considering the stage of life we were at. We have new puppies and a baby on the way, so that guided our decision. We wanted something wearable, washable and affordable. We wanted it to last us a few years til we are out of the crazy phase of raising babies and fur babies, and then replace it in a few years without feeling like it was a waste of money.

It has to be something that is comfortable, but also has to be stylish and durable

GruffaloPants · 08/08/2017 20:27

Non attendee here.

Get a sofa that you love the look of, but make sure it is comfy too!

carolacr · 08/08/2017 20:29

Measure the space it is going into, also will it fit in the doorway

moneypenny66 · 08/08/2017 20:36

For me the most important consideration when buying a sofa is comfort! Although colour is also a factor so that it doesn't clash.

mave · 08/08/2017 20:42

Non-attendee

Comfort and that it fits in your living room properly!

Narnianescape · 08/08/2017 20:45

That it is practice and comfortable

AngelwingsPetlamb · 08/08/2017 20:59

Non attendee: I think you need to consider whether it is good quality and will last a few years or whether it is cheaply made and will turn out to be a false economy ultimately.

rhinosuze · 08/08/2017 21:07

Non attendee - that it fits, that it's comfy (years ago I bought one you could barely sit on) and that my child can't ruin it!

socat · 08/08/2017 21:20

Has to have a high back so head supported. Too many these day are so low causes neck ache!!
(though it naturally has to fit through doors and into a space in sitting room etc.)

MSHGW · 08/08/2017 21:23

How durable it is!

The most important thing is size and shape. Whenever we change ours, I always go armed with the height, width and depth of our existing ones. It's so easy to buy a two and three seater to replace yours, and to assume that the size will be similar when it's way off! I've seen two seaters that are nearly as wide as our three seater, and no way would they fit in the space we have!

Catmadroo · 08/08/2017 21:26

Most important to me is comfort, can I sit on it comfortably in the different ways I like to curl up on the sofa and will it support my back. Then got to take in account colour for all those little stains my son manages to leave on the sofa!

I think the most important thing to consider is who will be using it and is is going to be suitable for you. I have 2 teenagers and a 3 yr old so i need something that can withstand a toddler diving all over it , something easy to clean and also something large enough for a 17 and 18 yr olds to sit on

LeeR1985 · 08/08/2017 21:40

Non -attendee. Most important thing to remember is how big your door frame is!! It's all well and good picking a sofa that looks great in your room but you're stuffed if you can't get it through the door
