This is the feedback thread for the 11 Mumsnetters who attended an exclusive DFS event in London to be matched to their ideal sofa.

Here’s what DFS has to say: “We know that choosing a sofa that’s right for you is something which everyone wants to get right, but it can sometimes feel like a challenge. At DFS, we have nearly 50 years of experience designing and hand-making sofas and want to make the sofa buying process as simple as possible. ‘Match Made at DFS’ was a chance for Mumsnetters to see how simple sofa shopping can be, when you consult those in the know.

On Wednesday 19th July we invited 12 Mumsnetters along to be ‘Match Made’ to their ideal sofa. During the match making process the Mumsnetters and DFS sofa experts chatted in detail about their sofa requirements. From colour and style, to product protection and financing, the Mumsnetters put the know-how of the DFS experts to the test. At the end of the match making process, the Mumsnetters were given the chance to choose the right sofa to meet their needs and suit their lifestyle.”

See the DFS 'match-making' process in action with their 'Ultimate Sofa Buying Guide' video here:

Attendees, please answer the following questions on your experience at the event

  • What did you enjoy most about the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Do you think that DFS has a good selection of sofas?
  • What did you think of DFS before attending the event?
  • Did your view of DFS change after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Would you recommend DFS to a friend after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?

Non-attendees, please answer the following question to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher.

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Thanks and good luck!

After Size, for me, with young kids it is the ability to clean it :)

After recently buying a sofa most important thing to remember is size- not just to fit in your room but if it'll even get in your house. It was touch and go there for a bit with ours!!
Otherwise I'd say making sure it's practical for you and the family

The most important thing to remember is comfort - no point getting something that looks great if you can't sit on it for hours when having a movie night in. I also look for washable covers as the dc always manage to spill something, and plenty of space for everyone to fit.

gamerpigeon · 30/01/2018 11:47

Non attendee - that it should last you a long time so you should pick one that fits your lifestyle now but also what you think your life might be like in 5 years.

Intotheclouds · 31/01/2018 12:01

Non attendee.

You should remember to look for comfort. And try the sofa out properly and sit in it how you would normally at home otherwise you may think it's comfortable but when you get it at home it may not be as comfortable as you had hoped.

Intotheclouds · 31/01/2018 12:03

Also remember to measure where it's going but most importantly your door ways! No good getting a new sofa that won't fit through the door!
Learnt this the hard way and had to have our window taken out to get the darn thing in the house! 🙈

MummyBtothree · 02/02/2018 14:48

Non-attendee = Make sure that the sofa is the right size for the room and have measurements handy so you know that on delivery, you will be able to fit it through the door etc.

vickyors · 08/02/2018 20:13

Non attendee- the most important thing- are the covers washable?
Then, comfort..!

mrsglowglow · 27/02/2018 20:06

The size of the sofa and how it will fit in to your room. Showrooms tend to make the sofas appear smaller than they are. Measure the length but don't forget the depth (especially with recliners that require clearance at the rear).

That it’s supposed to be comfortable, and however lovely it looks, if it’s not suitably squishy then it is no good!

Cheekyandfreaky · 08/03/2018 10:27

Non attendee here. Most important thing would be down to stain concerns. So not white or cream, not a fabric which can’t be easily cleaned and something which draws attention to stain proofing. Also it has to be comfy obviously.

For me, the most important thing when buying a sofa is that it can cope with having the dogs on it (not that our dogs are spoiled, ohhhh no Blush). We currently have a leather sofa and armchairs (from DFS, as it happens), and it works really well for us. It is easy to clean off the odd spill, and because we chose leather with a natural finish (ie. it has imperfections in the finish - marks on the leather that were on the animal's hide, differences in colour etc), any new stains or marks that have appeared, don't stick out like a sore thumb.

Previously, we had a sofa with removable, washable covers - we thought that, as we had small children at the time, this was a good idea, and to a certain extent, it was. But we could only wash the covers easily in the summer, when we could hang them out to dry - in the winter, we could put them on the radiators, but that was nowhere near as easy, and in spring and autumn when it wasn't hot and sunny enough to dry them outside, or cold enough for the heating to be on, it was really hard to dry them.

I also found that, even though I followed the washing and drying instructions, they shrank, and were a real mare to get back on, after washing.

Imgettingcheesefries · 08/03/2018 11:22

Non attendee, I've got 4 kids a messy husband and a dog so for me it's important to know how easy it is to clean

What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa? SIZE! If it won't fit in your house, no point in buying it Grin

Sixgeese · 22/03/2018 17:33

Most important thing is if the sofa will fit in your house. My DPIL recently got a new sofa and despite the showroom saying it would fit through their front door - it didn't!

DoryNora · 22/03/2018 18:19
  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Longevity! Buying a hard wearing sofa that isn't going to go out of style within 6 months, a plain colour that you can accessorise with throws and cushions rather than buying a brightly coloured patterned one and painting your front room a year later to something that clashes! Also something easy to clean and conceal stains from them darn kids!

For me, it's comfort, there is no point buying a sofa that may look amazing or be inexpensive if you can't enjoy sitting on it.

For this reason I spend hours trawling the shops when I'm ready to buy a new sofa, as I spend an age sitting in differneny positions on them.

PorridgeAgainAbney · 02/04/2018 19:52

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

How does it feel to lie on rather than just sit on? I found out just how much I hated our last sofa was when I injured myself and was consigned to it for three weeks as I couldn't get upstairs to the bedroom. It's important to know how it will feel when you're lazing as a family to watch a rainy afternoon film or laying on it with a bout of the flu for a couple of days Smile.

MTBMummy · 04/04/2018 12:57

The most important thing when buying a sofa is considering how you use it - do you like snuggles on a couch, or do you prefer your own chair, do you want something you can tuck your feet up on, or something more formal.

And space, having bought a sofa from a friend I latterly discovered I couldn't actually move around my own living room with it in - was sad to pass that one on, it was perfect in every other aspect.

And my personal check list does it have a coating that bastard cat will ruin when he inevitably tries to sharpen his claws on it, and with 2 messy kids, does it hide stains well and clean easily (ie removable covers)

CathBookworm · 07/04/2018 17:01
  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa? - it's going to be a long standing fixture in your home, so choose comfort, practicality and classic style.
Byrdie · 08/04/2018 14:56

In tester... does it fit, not fit just in your room but through the doors and into the room it's meant for!

Byrdie · 08/04/2018 14:56

In tester?? I meant NON tester.

The most importing for me to remember when buying a sofa is durability. Is it washable, will it withstand my 7year old doing headstands on it etc!

SillyMoomin · 09/04/2018 21:23

@JustineBMumsnet was there ever a winner for the non tester on this thread please?

Sugarhouse · 09/04/2018 21:38

I think it’s most important to remember it’s going to be a big part of your house for many years so a colour that won’t show up dirt easily especially when you have little ones and you really need to love it
