This is the feedback thread for the 11 Mumsnetters who attended an exclusive DFS event in London to be matched to their ideal sofa.

Here’s what DFS has to say: “We know that choosing a sofa that’s right for you is something which everyone wants to get right, but it can sometimes feel like a challenge. At DFS, we have nearly 50 years of experience designing and hand-making sofas and want to make the sofa buying process as simple as possible. ‘Match Made at DFS’ was a chance for Mumsnetters to see how simple sofa shopping can be, when you consult those in the know.

On Wednesday 19th July we invited 12 Mumsnetters along to be ‘Match Made’ to their ideal sofa. During the match making process the Mumsnetters and DFS sofa experts chatted in detail about their sofa requirements. From colour and style, to product protection and financing, the Mumsnetters put the know-how of the DFS experts to the test. At the end of the match making process, the Mumsnetters were given the chance to choose the right sofa to meet their needs and suit their lifestyle.”

See the DFS 'match-making' process in action with their 'Ultimate Sofa Buying Guide' video here:

Attendees, please answer the following questions on your experience at the event

  • What did you enjoy most about the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Do you think that DFS has a good selection of sofas?
  • What did you think of DFS before attending the event?
  • Did your view of DFS change after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Would you recommend DFS to a friend after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?

Non-attendees, please answer the following question to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher.

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Thanks and good luck!

I recently bought a new sofa a few months ago and was torn between comfort and quirky/ looks cool. I went for comfort in the end. Good arms on them and a good back so its comfortable to sit and lie down on! I love my sofa it's fab.

I think the most important thing is whether it fits your home and your needs.

For my family of 6 it would need to be large, durable and easy to clean!!

MummyBtothree · 08/08/2017 15:25

Non-Tester = Always buy something that is fit for purpose and is built to last. If it's for everyday use and going to get some hammer, make sure it is solid and spring based. Those foam cushioned seats are horrendous and go saggy with no support.

Is it comfortable and will the cats destroy it!

  1. Comfort
  2. How will it look in 5 years time? Still classic and/or stylish, or outdated?
  3. Will stains show easily on it?

Make sure you measure and double check again to make sure the sofa fits in the space you want to put it as well as through any doors and tight corners it needs to get around on the way in.

Make sure the colour and material are appropriate for the age of your kids in terms of cleaning and wear and tear.

victoriagranger92 · 08/08/2017 15:44

The most important thing for me when buying a sofa is definitely comfort! It's where you spend we spend our 'down time' and relaxation and chill out is so important after a hard day. A comfy sofa and a cup of tea are the perfect remedy!

sammylea80 · 08/08/2017 15:45

Non-attendee Removable seat cushions are a must for me as I can remove them to re-plump and even wash the covers.

stefalfie11 · 08/08/2017 15:45

The size of your room at home, it's very easy to get carried away in the shop because of the massive space that the sofas are in but you've got to remember that your room at home is much smaller and that you need a sofa to fit and to look good in that space instead of in the show room.

most important thing when buying a new sofa is will it be hard wearing

I think the most important thing is the size and how hard wearing/east to clean it is.

With young kids the most important thing for me is ease of cleaning. At the moment we have a leather sofa which is brilliant as it's wipe clean!

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?
Cost, comfort and praticality. Especially having youngs kids means it should be easy to clean whilst looking good too

fionabird75 · 08/08/2017 16:07

Non-attendee What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Making sure you can get it through the door! And if it is practical for kids and dogs

lizd31 · 08/08/2017 16:09

Will you be able to get it into the house! I've known people buy a suite & then find it's too big to manoeuvre into the house

happysouls · 08/08/2017 16:10

The most important thing for me when buying a sofa would be to think beyond the sinking down into a lovely comfy sofa feeling and consider whether it would give me backache after an hour or two! As a pair of back problem sufferers this would be the priority by a long distance!

For me the most important thing is will I still like this in a year?

mo3733 · 08/08/2017 16:15

the most important thing before choosing a sofa is to make sure it will actually fit through the door of your house !

ButterflyOfFreedom · 08/08/2017 16:24

The size & shape - it needs to fit comfortably in the room.

Comfort has got to be one of the most important things when buying a new sofa

To invest as much as you can for the right sofa. We spent much more than I wanted to on ours, but once I remembered how much time I spend sitting on it I realised it was worth every penny!

prwilson · 08/08/2017 16:34

Non-attendee: Try before you buy. Give it a good ol' test run.
