This is the feedback thread for the 11 Mumsnetters who attended an exclusive DFS event in London to be matched to their ideal sofa.

Here’s what DFS has to say: “We know that choosing a sofa that’s right for you is something which everyone wants to get right, but it can sometimes feel like a challenge. At DFS, we have nearly 50 years of experience designing and hand-making sofas and want to make the sofa buying process as simple as possible. ‘Match Made at DFS’ was a chance for Mumsnetters to see how simple sofa shopping can be, when you consult those in the know.

On Wednesday 19th July we invited 12 Mumsnetters along to be ‘Match Made’ to their ideal sofa. During the match making process the Mumsnetters and DFS sofa experts chatted in detail about their sofa requirements. From colour and style, to product protection and financing, the Mumsnetters put the know-how of the DFS experts to the test. At the end of the match making process, the Mumsnetters were given the chance to choose the right sofa to meet their needs and suit their lifestyle.”

See the DFS 'match-making' process in action with their 'Ultimate Sofa Buying Guide' video here:

Attendees, please answer the following questions on your experience at the event

  • What did you enjoy most about the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Do you think that DFS has a good selection of sofas?
  • What did you think of DFS before attending the event?
  • Did your view of DFS change after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Would you recommend DFS to a friend after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?

Non-attendees, please answer the following question to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher.

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Thanks and good luck!

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Will it be functional for who you are and how you live your life

pfcpompeysarah · 08/08/2017 21:42

Non-attendee. I think the answer to your question is that it has to feel comfortable as its where you spend a considerable period of time supposedly relaxing .. its all very well it being washable (obviously important with kids and pets) easily, being snazzy looking and the right size but if it doesn't 'feel' right then its not for me.

Price, comfort & reliability of the store

tia3456 · 08/08/2017 21:47

One definite important thing make sure you can fit it through your front door, we ordered one once and forgot about getting it in the house! Other things to remember is, choose a hardwearing one, if it is comfy, also choosing a suitable colour bearing in mind if you change the decor will it suit?

hmariez · 08/08/2017 21:53

Non-attendee- make sure it's easy to clean if children with sticky fingers get their hands on it 🙈

user1496053440 · 08/08/2017 21:54

Non-attendee - the most important thing to remember is that it will likely not stay pristine so it is not really worth going for a ridiculously expenses sofa

freefan · 08/08/2017 21:54

With hindsight we made the mistake of buying a sofa on sight which lost it's oomph in the cushions very quickly so I would say always find out if the sofa has springs.
Our sofa is only 8 months old and already had the repairman out to put more padding in ... no springs in it at all and guy said in the future to always ask if it has springs and if not to stay clear :(

madge47 · 08/08/2017 22:12

Non-attendee size that it fits in my living room and doesnt take too much space.

Realitea · 08/08/2017 22:28

The most important thing for me when buying a soda is durability. It might look pretty now but will it look the same in a year or two..or more! Removable covers are great but when they've been washed so many times they don't match the body of the sofa it doesn't look so great.

HoisinSource · 08/08/2017 22:31

Non attendee: comfort! It's all well and good having a beautiful sofa but if it's akin to sitting on a bag of rocks what's the point Grin

CheeseEMouse · 08/08/2017 22:33

When buying a sofa measure properly. The times I have done it I have made a newspaper cut out of the space the sofa will take up so I can visualise it in the room

Cailin7 · 08/08/2017 22:37

non-attendee, the size fits your space and the comfort and quality. Stain repellent or easily cleaned fabrics. When we bought our first sofas they were very beautiful but cream and a nightmare to clean.

sbruin1122 · 08/08/2017 22:57

comfort :P it's always about comfort.

Back support, I hate the multiple cushion sofas that look like they'll cuddle you but that you actually fall through and your head smacks into the wall behind because the support doesn't go high enough! HmmConfused

tillymint21 · 08/08/2017 23:29

It needs to be hard wearing, look good and be comfortable. When you consider how much it's used and by how many, it's worth making sure you take the time to make a careful decision.

Make sure it fits the room, we recently got a new sofa and it almost didn't fit.

svalentine60 · 09/08/2017 00:00

That it will be the centrepiece of your living room so make very sure that you take your time to pick one that fits in with your home and decor perfectly

Assuming you can get the sofa into the room, the most important thing is that it is hard wearing and doesn't look dirty (so avoid cream fabric with kids and pets).

How easy it is to clean, price and comfort

Most important its got to be comfortable and will it fit nicely without overpowering the room, the fabric needs to be easily cleaned for sticky hands!

Rosehips · 09/08/2017 08:23

Depth I'm short and often find my legs stickingout on sofa s cos they're too deep

It is something which you are likely to have for several years and use everyday so make sure you are 100% happy with it and its worth investing in quality.

That fabric sofas look wonderful for about 5 minutes until your toddler sets about destroying it. The treatment dfs recommended to us (and we paid extra for) has done nothing.

EmilyK83 · 09/08/2017 08:55

For me, it's taking your circumstances into account - leather or fake leather is easier to clean than fabric if there are pets/kids around - and darker coloured fabrics or patterns show up stains less!

Personally, I also look for nice deep sofas so we can curl up and relax comfortably, not just have to sit upright and straight the whole time :)
