The basics: a healthy diet, no drugs, cigarettes or vapes, lots of water, fresh air, exercise and sleep. Avoiding sugar, caffeine and alcohol for most of my life has definitely helped me stay young.
Once I switched to a high protein, low carbohydrate diet, my rosacea vanished and the condition of my skin, hair and nails significantly improved. Don't be vegan and don't drastically diet: malnutrition is no beauty aid.
Reassess your make-up as you get older: nowadays I just wear lipstick and mascara. Less is more.
Don't sunbathe, but don't overdo the SPF either- I gave myself a vitamin D deficiency!
Be as happy as you can: manage stress, value yourself, cultivate friendships and interests, be interested in the world, keep learning, practice gratitude.
Let go of youth, but keep a young outlook. Age is just a number.
Create inner beauty and it will radiate outwards. I'm no flawless beauty, but I feel more attractive at nearly 60 than I did at 20.

If I'm a winner, I shall treat myself to a lipstick.

Buy a silk eyemask - the best you can afford and large enough to fit around you eyes and forehead to reduce the sleep lines that stay longer on your face the older you get.

simpsonmaggie · 26/03/2025 13:40

Don't overpluck eyebrows

Smile more - it's the best exercise for your facial muscles

Drink plenty of water it helps the skin keep clear, and hydrated. My 80 grandmother had lovely skin and sweared by this tip. Less gin for me and more water is making a difference...

ParsnipPuree · 26/03/2025 20:14

Ditch foundation entirely after 50. I use a light spray tanning lotion instead with concealer for uneven tones.

itsywitsy · 27/03/2025 08:56

darker eyeshadow at the outer of eyelids, working to lighter towards the inner for a more striking look - and mascara is the last thing to apply.

lillypopdaisyduke · 27/03/2025 17:56

less is more

If you haven’t time to fully wash your hair, tie your hair back or put shower cap on and just wash your fringe. Makes you feel so much better and your hair still looks good

DrummingMousWife · 28/03/2025 02:18

Thank you mumsnet!! Nude lip collection is on the way !! ☺️

CarrotSeeds · 28/03/2025 03:38

Don’t obsess about your age but do make the best of yourself. Growing old is a privilege and can also be a joy. As I get older I take better care of my skin, I use a good moisturiser and factor 50 sun screen every day, tretinoin in the evenings. I have totally given up alcohol which is probably my best beauty tip. 😊

The best time was to loose the black eyeliner - and move to a brown eyeliner, my make-up did look too harsh, now looks so much more natural. With a soft eyeshadow and muted down lipstick I look so much better than I did - and look less 'dated'

Love this! I will act on that

Definitely try and get enough sleep. I've not been sleeping well at all and the effect on my skin is huge! I am determined to get back in better sleep habits and have also got some great tips off this thread to try out 🙂

Time for a lipstick refresh for me I think!

Griffyn · 30/03/2025 08:13

Drink plenty of water
Sleep lots
Brown mascara instead of black - black washes me out.
SPF on your face

@MaddyMumsnet
Sorry for the delay in getting back to the thread! I've just had a baby and getting into the swing of things. So, (after much deliberation) I ordered the radiant skin tint and eye perfecter. The staff at Delilah were great at helping me find the right colour for my skin btw, which is always so useful! The products are so nice and light. Perfect for a quick application when there's not much time. They subtlety smooth the skin and give a lovely dewy finish.
Thanks so much again!! 😍

Wear sunscreen in all weathers. Sun is the biggest factor in premature ageing and it is caused by UVA rays. UVB rays make you tan and are a risk in sunny weather whereas UVA rays are present even on the gloomiest days. So sunscreen must be on always, both outside and inside, as well as in the car, as UVA rays can penetrate the windows too.
I have been wearing sunscreen religiously and my skin is absolutely fantastic at nearly 46.

Me too. Best thing j have ever done for my skin. And drinking water like a loon.

aldisud · 06/04/2025 08:42

A little lipstick can lift any face. That and get enough sleep!

IhadaStripeyDeckchair · 07/04/2025 15:59

Moisturise morning & evening
Use sun screen

TheGirlWithGlassFeet · 11/04/2025 22:47

Start with good skincare. All makeup will look better on good skin. I would get this if I win...a bit of everything barrym.com/collections/bundles-and-sets/products/value-makeup-goody-bag-topaz-dreams

Frozenpeace · 15/04/2025 18:10

For me - give your face as many make up free days as you can.
I use make up when I want to make an impact or hide how tired I am, but my skin also has lots of days off from it.

Also, for a very quick "make over" , just blusher and a bit of lip colour and mascara honestly give such a lift

best tip, babywipes make the best cleansers for removing make up

They really don’t!
