Erk. DH has invited his nan for dinner this week. To cut a long story short, he was estranged from that side of the family for years. I've met her a few times now and she is lovely, but I'm panicky at the best of times when I have people round who I know well.

What the hell can I make that we can all eat?! DH has suggested spag bol, but I want something a bit more interesting.

Help!

tabulahrasa · 21/08/2016 22:49

What would you make if you weren't doing SW?

MollyRedskirts · 21/08/2016 23:01

Good question! I would probably do a big salad with wraps, then some kind of meaty filling for them, like coronation chicken, or pulled pork. Then shop-bought sides, like coleslaw and potato salad. A bowl of grated cheese, maybe some oven chips or wedges. Everything laid out on the table for everyone to help themselves to what they like.

The only problem is that I'd have to make all of that myself from scratch for it to be on plan, so I think I need to think of something simpler.

DH is a great help, but not a great cook, so realistically he'll end up watching the kids while I cook.

tabulahrasa · 21/08/2016 23:21

Well wedges are a doddle, I don't even parboil, I can't tell the difference so I don't bother, salad's the same, obviously, lol.

Tesco do a pulled beef that's 2.5 Syns for the whole packet or pork that's 5..,and there's definitely recipes for pulled pork if you'd usually make it, they also do a pink slaw that's free, it's vinegary rather than mayonnaisey but it's really nice. (That's why I looked up the pulled meats from there, lol)

So actually that's fairly do-able, I'd have thought?

maygirl · 22/08/2016 00:22

Sounds lovely! SW pulled pork is dead easy, hardest part is cutting the fat off the joint! Can make quick coronation chicken using the syn free chicken tikka packs mixed with yogurt/lightest mayo, curry powder and tbsp mango chutney 2 syns, but could be pricey to use these for a lot of people. Lidl pulled beef is 0.5 syn per serving, not tried it yet but it sounds nice! I usually serve HeB wholemeal rolls with pulled pork and coleslaw, goes well with baked beans (for the DCs!) or a bean salad. Wedges, or even easier jacket spuds. Hassleback potatoes are also a dead easy halfway between wedges and jackets , cook quicker than a jacket and can fit more onto a baking tray than wedges, but they end up like wedges when eating them. I slice in half lengthways, then slice down lengthways as if cutting chips but only cut 2/3 way down , on baking tray with spray oil and salt for 35 -45 mins. Get DH grating for the coleslaw!

Changed menu today as HAD to have a Sunday roast. Unfortunately decided this v late in day and had to race to shops and wasn't ready till nearly 8pm. So worth it though! Nom nom nom.
Hi Calzone!

Itwillbefine · 22/08/2016 06:29

I've been doing SW this year, only 11.5lb down but I'm not 100% strict with myself. I love having new recipes but don't really want to put them on my SW FB group....

Welcome back calzone!

Molly - how about burrito bowls? I do separate bowls of the following, and give everyone a bowl to add what they want:

Rice with lime juice and chopped coriander stirred through
Shredded lettuce
Homemade salsa with chopped tomato, red pepper, onion, chopped jalapeños from a jar and a bit of the jalapeño juice
Sliced jalapeños
Sweetcorn
Mexican chicken slices (I buy them from Asda's cooked meat section)
Cheese
Fat free yoghurt instead of sour cream

So good!

wishingchair1 · 22/08/2016 08:28

Going to wheat bran all week. Hopefully order some scan bran online tomorrow.
Lunch will be subway salad i think. All free no cheese.
Tonight going to make an arrabiata sauce with linguine.
May do some more weigh ins this week to keep focused.

wishingchair1 · 22/08/2016 08:33

abigwideworld · 22/08/2016 09:53

Hi again everyone. Forgot about this thread! Had a 4.5ln gain a few weeks ago when I think baby had a growth spurt but have since lost 1/2lb of this. Got WI tonight and hoping for another lb off but I'd be happy with a maintain.

How is everyone doing?

wishingchair1 · 22/08/2016 10:03

Can i ask, is it 1 hexa and 1 hexb or is it two hexb. I can't remember now.
Using wheatbran

EmilyK83 · 22/08/2016 10:37

Hi wishing - it's one of each for regular days. If you're doing SP, it's one HexA and 2 HexB choices.

Today's plan for me:

B - fruit and yoghurt
L - bacon, spinach, eggs, HexB toast
D - Aldi sweet chilli basa (0.5), boiled baby potatoes, veg

HexA probably milk in a hot chocolate this evening. Not sure on syns - aiming for 10 or under...

derikthesheep · 22/08/2016 10:47

Fab wing! So I managed my sp day yesterday. Had 2 biscuits for syns and a couple of other bits. WI day today gulp!pretty certain I've gained as I weigh myself at home but can't be helped. Was gonna do sp again today but I actually found it pretty restrictive-maybe I just need to plan it better:)

froubylou · 22/08/2016 11:34

Morning all

Yesterday was a good day. Saturday nit so goof. Had pizza hut for tea. Was yum though lol.

Todays plan.

chough · 22/08/2016 12:06

Hello, all.
Well done on losses and thanks for nice meal ideas.
I've been to group this morning, and lost two pounds.
That's 6 and a half over the last two weeks, so just another 2 and a half to get back into target.
I've been on a "Big Push" for the last two weeks:
2 scan bran every day
portion control
SP meals at least once a day
5 to 10 syns daily
Also was Slimmer of the Week today, and received a lovely basket of fruit and veg, and a summer recipe booklet.

PositiveAttitude · 22/08/2016 13:10

Well done on losses and nearly getting to target!!

I am away from home to be with my DD2. Her baby is doing very well, long way to go yet. Born over 14 weeks early and tiny, but he is a fighter and doing well. I have spent the entire last few days sat waiting around for hours at a time. The only place to sit and wait is the cafe!!!! Hmm I have been trying to turn my back on the cakes, cookies and snacks when all I want to do is scoff the lot! I am hoping that stress will have counter-acted the off-plan-ness!! I have tried hard, but ........

I should be travelling home tomorrow, all being well here, so I should be able to get along to WI tomorrow evening. Although I wonder if the travelling will make me retain fluid and give me a higher weight? or am I just clutching at excuses???

chough · 22/08/2016 13:21

Positive, that's good news that baby's doing well.
You have enough on your plate at the moment without worrying about counting cafe syns: sometimes, life gets in the way.

EmilyK83 · 22/08/2016 14:07

Glad to hear he's doing well Positive - and I agree with Chough!

Nice loss there Chough, you're doing amazingly!

WingDefence · 22/08/2016 14:58

Oh glad to hear your news Positive - congratulations!

Right, I need your advice, lovely MN SWers!

I've just spoken to SWHQ. When I reach target as an online member I have to keep paying or I can transfer my membership to a group and it will be free; I just need to weigh in once every 8 weeks at least which I should be able to do.

The only thing is, I think I might want to drop my target by a bit, possibly half a stone. Giving you my details (eek) I started at 12 stone 3 and I'm now 10 stone 1. I originally wanted just to lose 2 stone but reduced my target to a round 10 stone instead. I'm a good 12 now but would be happy just losing a little bit more really. But apparently if I swap to group membership and want to drop target again to 9.5 stone I'd have to become a weekly member again. I don't mind paying £4.95 (or whatever it is) every week to do so but I can't make weekly meetings. So the very helpful SW lady suggested a drop target now while I've got some prepaid membership already and then when I hit target again I'll move to group.

Bearing in mind that it's taken me seven months just to lose this much Blush so I am looking forward to being at target but I am also happy continuing what I'm doing now as I don't feel deprived or anything.

So my questions are:

  • should I drop target now?
  • Should I drop it another 7lbs or should I just reduce it by a few lbs? (I think you can stay within 3lbs or target as a group member so I could reduce it to 9s 10lbs and then still sit happily at 9.7)?

I can't decide. Weirdly I can't picture myself at 9.7, I can't remember how much I weighed when I got married ten years ago but I was a bumpy size ten then. I'm happy as a size 12 but things could be a little bit looser iykwim?

Sorry to brain dump - I have no consultant to discuss all this with! Flowers for your thoughts please x

ALemonyPea · 22/08/2016 15:00

Glad to hear your grandson is doing ok Positive, I hope he continues well with no major setbacks.

ALemonyPea · 22/08/2016 15:05

X posted with you there Wing.

Once you hit target you have to stay 3lb either side otherwise you have to pay the normal weekly until you're back in target.

Also, meetings, if you work shifts, there is a box you tick on the joining form and you don't need to pay when you can't get there for work reasons, so that could be a good option. You also get access to the online system.
