I am thinking of joining Slimming World but unsure as to do Group membership or online, at present

noodlezoodle · 01/08/2016 16:15

Morning all, thanks for the lovely welcome. It's just occurred to me that I'm going to be popping up on this thread at really weird times - it's 8am here Smile

It is pretty great having 2 HEAs, I do end up using them for milk and cheese pretty much every day. Syn values are the same, so I think that's why we get fewer syns - to account for the extra HEA. Apparently it's because the recommended health guidelines in the US require more calcium per day than in the UK.

Went out for dinner last night and ate... a burger. Whoops, not even a slightly good choice. Eating out is definitely my weak spot. Argh. Today is going to be:

B: Weetabix
L: Chicken salad
D: Leek and goat's cheese omelette, maybe some SW chips

chough · 01/08/2016 16:26

noodle, I'm an old-timer at Slimming World, and it used to be 1 or 2 "a" choices here in the UK, and I liked having 2.
Emigration could be the answer.

noodlezoodle · 01/08/2016 17:03

chough, that made me smile. If syn values are the same (which I think they are), would it work out the same if you did have 2 HEAs and only 10 syns?

One real downside is that with the new US website, they've just removed all the brands from the syns database. The official explanation was that they want people to focus on free foods, but I think it may also be because it's hard to keep it up to date. Either way it's really annoying.

abigwideworld · 01/08/2016 17:50

I love having 2 A choices. I'm going to miss it loads when the baby is born!

It's weigh day for me, 1/2 off this week. Just bought a countdown which ends the week the baby is due. Exciting times!!

emwithme · 01/08/2016 17:52

I haven't even thought of synning a small amount of cheese each day (I have been doing SW on and off for so long that not only do I remember 2 of each healthy extra but I have recipes that spell "syns" as "sins") and limiting myself to 10 syns. I could so do that.

I may well do that next week, in fact (already shopped and planned for this week)

EmilyK83 · 01/08/2016 17:54

A HexA works out at 6 syns, for the most part...so guess we could easily have milk AND cheese and still have 9 syns to play with...?

I actually weighed out 12.5g of cheese to put on my pasta last night which worked out at 2 syns. Was so worth it, though - I always grate it on the small side of the grater so it looks like more!

chough · 01/08/2016 18:19

Cheese as syns could be the way to go.
Em, I remember syns as sins, too!
And corned beef quiche!
Heinz tinned macaroni cheese was free!
Happy days.

froubylou · 01/08/2016 18:26

Evening all

Funny day food wise as don't have much in and not going properly shopping until tomorrow now.

B. Coffee
L. MuseLi and ff yog
T. Jacket spud, gammon and a bit of manky veg. Really don't like the look of it so might see if I have any in freezer.

Syns will be this g and t and that's probably it.

chough · 01/08/2016 18:28

manky veg Grin Grin

maygirl · 01/08/2016 18:29

Well done Chough, Wing and Abigwideworld! You get 6 Healthy extras if you end up breastfeeding Abigwideworld! How I miss those days on SW, long gone now, and was hard to give them up! (The extra food not the bf!) So have u got 6 or 12 weeks to go? Exciting!
I second doing an SAS log Gedlams, and join us on here posting your food and if something jumps out we'll let you know. I've made mistakes thinking something was a Speed food before and at our group someone sometimes puts avocado in the slimmer of the week basket! The last stone can also be hard, i've got just under to go and regularly maintain or go up/down by half pound. It's really disheartening. I think I'm in denial that I need to stick to 5-10 syns now perhaps! If I have much booze as syns I don't lose either.

gedlams · 01/08/2016 18:33

chough
thanks for the info. I will be speaking to the consultant on Wednesday to see if there is anything I can do to help. I must be doing something wrong. I do not even feel like im losing weight anymore. six weeks off work for summer hols. So I guess that means I have to work that bit harder and keep active. I am not going to beat my self up to much I have lost and feel much better for it.

chough · 01/08/2016 18:34

Yes, gedlams, you could put your food on here.
Fresh pairs of eyes and all that.

maygirl · 01/08/2016 18:36

Omg corned beef, I remember those days, I used to keep macaroni cheese and ravioli tins in my desk drawer at work for lunches!
And loads of recipes that are seen as tweaks now. Do you remember lochen pudding? A whole bag of angel hair pasta cooked then mixed with fromage frais, egg, sweetener, cinnamon and raisins, just a few 'sins' for the raisins, we were encouraged to eat the whole baking tin full lol!

chough · 01/08/2016 19:12

maygirl, no, I've not heard of that lochen pudding.
Here's the thing , though: people still lost weight, didn't they?

maygirl · 01/08/2016 19:23

Yeah there were always big losses. I think the people with a several stone to lose lost really well. I got stuck above target (like now!) and jumped ship to Rosemary C to finish the job! It was when I was still living at home before DH and DC were on the scene. I can't face calorie counting now, SW feels right for family life!
I remember a lot if of people having huge losses, living off McCain chunky oven chips and beans !

chough · 01/08/2016 19:29

Yes, SW does fit in well with family life.
DH and I started pre-Extra Easy days, when DS was a teenager and still at home.
The plan wasn't quite as family- friendly then, with the red and green days, but I just used to cook some potatoes or rice or whatever, to add to DSs meal.

MollyRedskirts · 01/08/2016 19:38

I suppose it was more 'diet-like' back then, when diets tended to be gimmicky, whereas now I think SW are very good at taking on board the latest nutritional advice and incorporating it. I had gestational diabetes and got used to carb counting, and I noticed that the speed free veg and fruit are all the lower carb ones as well as being lower calorie than the free fruit and veg.

Buttwing · 01/08/2016 19:40

I first did slimming world when I was 18 I weighed 10 stone 2 and thought I was fat (I'm 5"7) I got down to 8"13 which was the lowest target weight you could be at 5"6 (I lied about my height!) I was so thin.
Now at 38 after 4dc I wish I was 10 stone 2! I remember living on baked potatoes and beans, I don't like corned beef but I remember everyone talking about it a lot also stock cubes used to be synned, not sure why it's not really something you would binge eatConfused

Cinema was great, we went to frankie and bennys for food afterwards which was not so good! I had grilled chicken and lettuce pitta with corn on the cob and chips not great but could have been so so much worse!

chough · 01/08/2016 19:45

Agree, Buttwing, no one ever got fat eating Oxo cubes!

EmilyK83 · 01/08/2016 19:49

Sounds like things have really changed - hadn't realised that corned beef was free before! the Heinz macaroni cheese would have helped me to get past my cheesy pasta cravings if it was still free too!

Realised I haven't actually had my HexA today. Might use half of it as milk in an Options to feel a bit decadent, and the other half on a Cheestring...

chough · 01/08/2016 19:51

Emily, did you go to the consultant opportunities event?

maygirl · 01/08/2016 20:00

I was similar age Buttwing, was 9 stone something, then moved on to Rosemary C and got to 8 stone 7. Aiming to get back to 9 stone something!
What's 'fast forward' chough? Maybe I need to do this? I've been on Success Express in the old days and did lose but felt rough on it, but was still partially bf.

chough · 01/08/2016 20:09

maygirl, I don't know if the fast forward is a thing anymore, as I've not heard it mentioned in group for a while.
It's for when members get really stuck at a certain weight, and the usual solutions don't seem to work ( increasing speed, etc).
It's a completely different plan, followed for a week, very restrictive and prescriptive.
You would need to ask your consultant for the plan, but I seem to recall it was very specific about what to eat.
Also, it seemed to be given out as a last resort.

ALemonyPea · 01/08/2016 20:23

Evening all, welcome newbies.

Went to WI tonight and I lost a surprising 3lbs! Really pleased with that, got my 2.5 stone award as well 😇

Have ordered Indian food, I am in holiday mode until Friday morning, and then will try claw back the fuckton of syns I will have consumed.

Good luck everyone, I'll catch up when I get back.
