Awake with newborn, anyone else? :)

My little boy is nine days old. He sleeps pretty well during the day but at night just wants to be held and breastfed. He doesn't settle in his moses basket at night (but he will quite often do so during the day)

Anyone else up doing the same?! I'm not keen on the idea of co-sleeping but would be grateful for any advice. Baby sleeps in a gro-snug and we have a dream sheep but I'm guessing this frequent feeding and love of cuddles in the night is probably just par for the course at this early stage? 😊 I am napping during the day so I'm probably averaging about 6 hrs sleep in a 24 hr period.

Loving my dd would only sleep on her tummy and we gave in and let her. She was a much better sleeper when we let her do that.

Jellybabie3 · 03/11/2017 09:05

Ds ended up in bed with me Confused does anyone have a good link with images of safe cosleeping arrangements?? Feel bad i nodded off!

How did you sleep with him on your chest? Do u prop yourself up?

Lovingtyrells · 03/11/2017 09:05

Hi hashtag, he will sleep on front and side but I have been scaremongers by midwivesand healrh visitor about this, did you use a breathing monitor ?

Lallypopstick · 03/11/2017 09:15

@Jellybabie3 here you go www.isisonline.org.uk/image-archive/images/

I tucked the duvet in each side of the bed to my waist and laid my head on propped up pillows so I was a bit of a slant with my elbows on mattress holding him. When I woke up I was in exactly the same position. I woke up before he even went to a cry for the next feed and was wriggling.

HashtagTired · 03/11/2017 10:08

Loving. Yes. That’s why we got it because we were made to feel bad! I got the angelcare one and it helped us put our mind at rest (a little bit). I remember when my HV visited and she asked me how she was sleeping and I, for a split second, was going to lie. But I thought ‘sod it’ and just told her that she would only settle on her front and that’s how she was sleeping. It was a tumbleweed moment but she was then supportive of my decision as it meant I got rest.
Don’t feel bullied by them (or try not to). Do what feels right for you.

I co-sleep most nights. It's either co-sleep or no sleep!

DD finally asleep after figting sleep for 3 hours! I am already shattered and am not looking forward to tonightSad

mummarosie1 · 03/11/2017 15:57

Saw the health visitor today who mentioned that co-sleeping was a big 'no-no'... when it seems like literally all of us do it for at least part of the night if not all of it!

AMagdalena · 03/11/2017 16:13

I think it's actually more dangerous to fall asleep holding the baby out of exhaustion than to co-sleep safely!
I fell asleep once feeding DD and it scared me to death.

GinUnicorn · 03/11/2017 17:08

Co-slept as well last night. Was so tired. I sleep with arms protecting her and wake up aching but at least I get a few hours

Jellybabie3 · 03/11/2017 17:14

I woke up with a crooked neck but still felt victorious getting an hour and a half. Sweet jesus the things we do.....

HashtagTired · 03/11/2017 18:29

Of course they will say it’s a big no-no, what else could they say? Of course it’s better for baby to sleep in a crib next to the bed (or in the same room), with no loose sheets or items inside with baby. They can’t be seen to be saying it’s ok to do any different. I would be the same. I wouldn’t tell my friend it’s ok, doesn’t mean to say I wouldn’t do it.

GimbleInTheWabe · 03/11/2017 22:13

I woke up last night with my DS between me and DP. I’d fallen asleep accidentally whilst feeding him in the side by side position and I woke up with my back to DS. I was so worried and angry at myself for falling asleep even though obviously I didn’t mean to.
He’s only 3 weeks old and already has his first cold poor little guy. Just used saline and the squeezy bogey thing for the first time. Weirdly satisfying..

AMagdalena · 04/11/2017 06:50

DD did 4 hours in the cot before I woke her up accidentally.
Only 2 wake ups Wink

Jellybabie3 · 04/11/2017 06:53

I'm in feed number 3. Down at 10.30pm. Up at 1.30 ish 3.30 and now 6am. Feels like a huge victory! Hoping for another couple......fx

GinUnicorn · 04/11/2017 07:38

Great news Magda and jellybean! Xx

GimbleInTheWabe · 04/11/2017 07:41

Just finished feed #3 too.
Did One after his bath at 10ish then up at 1, 4 and 7. Hopefully get another hunk of sleep now until 9:30ish.
Even though he’s still newborn I think doing his little routine has helped. He has a bath for just a few minutes between 9 and 10 (which he likes!) then I give him a little massage with oil. Fresh nappy and clothes and then a feed, a story (I know - he’s got no idea!) then cuddled upright for 30 mins whilst he nods off and disgusts his milk as he’s quite refluxy. Has worked quite well the last 3 nights.

Jellybabie3 · 04/11/2017 09:15

Having another feed now so nearly another two hours 😊. I do exactly the same as you gimble although last night we added a fleece to the bottom of his sleepyhead as i noticed the night before it was cold to touch, added daddys t-shirt, hw bottle to warm before putting down, sort of swaddled but only to the arms as he likes to wave em, put ewan on at the end of feeding when he does the gentle sucks to help him nod off, as hes in the side cot i also do last bit of feed laid down on the bed so i can literally lift him slightly and plop him in sleepyhead. Sooooooo happy to get some sleep!!

Ive not had two good nights in a row so fx!!

AMagdalena · 04/11/2017 14:18

Good stuff, Jellie!

Lovingtyrells · 04/11/2017 18:14

Well done ladies! I can’t go only 3 feeds that long yet

Hatstand · 04/11/2017 20:54

Just popping in to say gagh fireworks! Hope it's nice and quiet for the rest of you tonight Smile

Jellybean2017 · 04/11/2017 21:41

Same, Hatstand, blooming things!!

Feed #1
Could do with some good quality sleep tonight, but whilst he’s just finished, he doesn’t loo all that settled. 😩

sleepycat13 · 05/11/2017 02:47

we have been on feed number 1 for the last two hours now. he feeds for a bit, falls asleep, I put him down in his crib and 5 mins later he is awake and unhappy. he suffers reflux but also think startling may be part of the problem.
has anyone tried the gro snug swaddle sleeping bag things? tempted to try...
failing that it's sleeping in my bed but there isn't much room with the husband too and I'm not sure it get much more sleep as scared of cosleeping

Jellybean2017 · 05/11/2017 03:02

We used the gro snugs in the early days and they worked well. Baby big enough for gro bags now.

We are on second feed. I'm going to wake DH at 6 so he can take baby and I can sleep!
