What SINGLE thing would make Mumsnet better for you?

bibbitybobbityhat · 19/03/2010 16:31

Thread rules:

  1. please be respectful to mnhq, this is not a bitch fest about MN
  1. only one THING per poster (or, if you must, you can have more than one but they must be on separate posts).

My thread. My rules. No arguments.

Right, I will start:

I do wish people would spend more time reading than posting. So often you have a thread (quite often an AIBU) where someone says "I haven't read the thread but YABU" or more often lately the highly unnecessary YABVVVVVVVVU when the thread has moved on hugely since the op, the arguments have all been had, everyone has bitched and moaned, made up, had a cup of tea, done a bit of ironing. If there is a slightly sparky looking OP and hundreds of posts on a thread, why not take that as a clue that the thread may well have moved on, questions asked and answers given, and read before you post?

OP posts:

someone suggested a bat sign when a thread kicks off

that made me lol

imagikne looking up intot eh sky and all running for PCs

leftangle · 20/03/2010 15:49

I'd like a further tab in the talk panel on the right for most recent threads. The most active tab means that the active threads get more active and the rest can get ignored. If there was a third tab for most recent threads it might change the balance a little.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/03/2010 15:51

Ability to choose your most used thread topics to be displayed prominently, rather than mumsnet choosing IYSWIM

notcitrus · 20/03/2010 15:51

Email notification of posts I write and followups to them. Very annoying that if I write a wonderful well-argued comment, I can't have it on my computer ready to post again if required or easily find out if anyone's responded more than 3 days later.

Livejournal do it very well.

BecauseImWorthIt · 20/03/2010 15:53

DG - you said you wanted 'I agree with Dumbledoresgirl' after all your posts.

I was simply obliging!

daisy5678 · 20/03/2010 15:54

On another note, would like it if people didn't go onto threads just to be awkward e.g. going onto a thread about what time your kids go to school just to say 'my kids don't go to school as they're 2 and 3'. Crap example, but I've seen that type of thing increasing recently. Or going onto a thread just to say 'yawn' or 'boring'. If people haven't got anything to contribute, don't know why they bother!

Dumbledoresgirl · 20/03/2010 15:55

I know, but when you slip over into narcissism, it does make me look at you!

BecauseImWorthIt · 20/03/2010 16:04

Now I'm a bit worried that I'm going to have to stalk you around the boards posting "I agree with Dumbledoresgirl" every time you post something!

THis offer applies to anyone posting today. I am not a troll I am a long standing poster of great integrity.

paisleyleaf · 20/03/2010 17:36

Like TrillianAstra, I'd like threads I'm on to be updated when anyone posts on them - not just me. So then if a thread gets posted on again after quite a long time, I'll see it.

I'd like to be able to delete threads I'm watching by clicking down a list. The time it takes now is why I put off doing it.

CuppaTeaJanice · 20/03/2010 18:09

I'd like to be able to hide a thread on the active threads list without having to go into it. Sometimes there's an offensive/upsetting/annoying thread title that keeps coming up on the list and I don't want to read it, I just want to quickly and easily get rid of it.

Also if I post on a long thread I'd like to be able to read from my last post onwards without having to search through multiple pages, or remember which page I posted on.

BecauseImWorthIt · 20/03/2010 19:14

Instant expulsion for anyone using "it's" instead of "its".

I think that's quite reasonable.

letsdoittogether · 20/03/2010 19:36

but only if it's the correct its of course

Alouiseg · 20/03/2010 19:40

An iPhone App.

hormonesnomore · 20/03/2010 20:23

Janice - you can hide threads from the active convo list without having to go into them. Just click on hide

CrosswordGeek · 20/03/2010 20:26

A tick next to threads that I've posted in, that takes me to MY last post.
I hate having to trawl through what I have already read find where I left off.

Lonicera · 20/03/2010 20:28

Sparkley tickers please

McBitchy · 20/03/2010 20:28

agree with bof

'stickies' to go on posters names so i can recall easily

  1. if they are my friend and why
  2. if they are not my friend and why
  3. what they used to be called
BitOfFun · 20/03/2010 20:42

Janice, if you go into Customise, there is an option to show the hide button in active convos.

StillSquiffy · 21/03/2010 10:10

As a paid-up member of rubberneckers united, I'd like to see an emoticon count next to the threads.

That way we can find the threads that are really or

SmileysPeepul · 21/03/2010 13:34

list of 'hits' on a thread or number of people reading/have read it not just the number of posts.

i think that would be a good reminder that mnay read/lurk with interst but don't post, so it is worth adding you advice to a thread even if there doesn't seem to be alot of posting on it.

Also a good reminder about how large and public MN is, not a bad thing.

lostinwales · 21/03/2010 13:36

A journalist filter so we don't end up with threads like this being quoted in articles like these.

CuppaTeaJanice · 21/03/2010 14:55

Thanks hormones and BOF, I've just been and changed my preferences so I can hide all the gumph I don't want to read! It could be improved by being able to tick a load of boxes next to all the threads and then clicking to hide them all at once. A bit like you do when deleting emails. My computer's really slow so that would save a lot of time.

There was another option called 'Ignore Thread Stickies' - any ideas what that means?

CuppaTeaJanice · 21/03/2010 15:07

Well I'm already getting really irritated by that hide button.

Straight after the thread title with no space, and repeated 50 times down the page. It makes it really difficult to read the thread titles properly. Why can't we just have a little x on the right hand side, or something equally unobtrusive?

Might have to go back into customise and get rid of it again...
