What SINGLE thing would make Mumsnet better for you?

bibbitybobbityhat · 19/03/2010 16:31

Thread rules:

  1. please be respectful to mnhq, this is not a bitch fest about MN
  1. only one THING per poster (or, if you must, you can have more than one but they must be on separate posts).

My thread. My rules. No arguments.

Right, I will start:

I do wish people would spend more time reading than posting. So often you have a thread (quite often an AIBU) where someone says "I haven't read the thread but YABU" or more often lately the highly unnecessary YABVVVVVVVVU when the thread has moved on hugely since the op, the arguments have all been had, everyone has bitched and moaned, made up, had a cup of tea, done a bit of ironing. If there is a slightly sparky looking OP and hundreds of posts on a thread, why not take that as a clue that the thread may well have moved on, questions asked and answers given, and read before you post?

OP posts:

I'd like to be able to delete threads from 'Threads I'm On' like you can with 'Threads I'm Watching'.

A) it would tidy up my list, and B) some things you just don't need to be reminded of

sausagepastie · 21/03/2010 17:22

Cider that's not too hard, you click on hide on the thread itself and bang it vanishes from I'm on page too - discovered by fluke! It is a pain I know but possible if you have a few minutes.

sausagepastie · 21/03/2010 17:23

but really should be a delete button on threads I'm on.

southeastastra · 21/03/2010 17:24

being able to edit in say a minute or so, would be good

Hermya321 · 21/03/2010 17:25

Sometimes I would like to be able to send private messages to other MN members without giving out my email address ifywim.

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 21/03/2010 17:36

Thanks sausagepastie - I'll remember that for when I've got a truly horrendous one to blot from my memory

Usually the ones I'd remove are the ones which I threadkilled turned out to be tedious, or mildly irritating, so may just as well be zapped from my list

Nymphadora · 21/03/2010 18:15

Hi Hermya [stalker]

sausagerolemodel · 21/03/2010 18:24

Better, more clearly descriptive thread titles. I hate those "I can't believe THIS happened" (or similar). They usually end in three or four full stops like this?.

...and I have to open it to find out if I am interested in reading the contents. My time on here is precious. I hate clicking and waiting for a page to load only to find out its some codswallop I have zero interest in.?.

Chunkyrice · 21/03/2010 19:11

To be able to read posts when screen is minimized without having to scroll across. Could fit in with iphone app.

Maratch · 21/03/2010 20:07

Being able to give a thumbs up & thumbs down to a post (like on Facebook)

hairymelons · 21/03/2010 20:10

Love this thread, I've learnt loads.
Before I go off hiding threads, we definately need Blackberry/ i-Phone versions for mning on the loo go.

fruitshootsandheaves · 21/03/2010 20:13

I would like a 'confidential' section where you can post stuff that can't be found by Googling or by journalists other unscrupulous people / stalkers.

hairymelons · 21/03/2010 20:41

Right, I've just posted on another thread and remembered what really winds me up! When you hit 'post message', the screen refreshes and takes you back to the OP at the top. This is really annoying cos you then have to scroll down to see how pithy and incisive your post looks.

Slubberdegullion · 21/03/2010 20:42

melons you can turn the thread round, somewhere in customise you can do it.

Slubberdegullion · 21/03/2010 20:45

yes, customise, other options, reading direction.

all your pithy posts will now be at the top

Pengimum · 21/03/2010 20:51

A spell check pl... cos my typing and spelling are both v crap and I'm always in too much of a hurry to read things back properly.
x

hairymelons · 21/03/2010 22:44

This is the thread that just keeps giving!

Thanks, Slubber.

hairymelons · 21/03/2010 22:46

Pengimum, feel I must give a little back...
If you use Opera as your internet wotsit instead of Internet Explorer it has a built in spell check.

LaRagazzaInglese · 22/03/2010 00:14

To update the acronyms page, i often find new ones i don't know and they're not on the acronyms list

Mongolia · 22/03/2010 00:17

A timer that prevented me from spending hours a day in Mumsnet.

CarrieDaBabi · 22/03/2010 08:38

a breatherliser on my laptop, so i cant mn while drunk

Jamieandhismagictorch · 22/03/2010 09:51

I haven't read the whole thread

But people saying wtf, or ffs, or fgs, without thinking of the other person's emotional state. There are other ways to get someone to see your point of view, without ffsaking them

Jamieandhismagictorch · 22/03/2010 10:00

Right. Have now read the whole thread, because I agree with whoever it was who said it's arrogant and annoying when people don't.

I agree with DDG. AIBU is becoming a Bad Thing.

Clydesdale · 22/03/2010 10:22

I too would like to be able to edit my posts - nothing worse than when you hit the post button and find a spelling mstke misstake mistakk that you can't spell!
