Swearing, nicknames etc

Afternoon Mumsnetters,

There's been a bit of discussion about offensive nicknames. We do allow swearing on MN, as you know - it's a site for grown-ups, not for children - but as our overriding aim is to make folks' lives easier and many Mumsnetters object to the use of the c-word, in particular, we think it would be best if folks didn't use it in their nicknames. Using it as a nickname effectively means you are using it not for effect but for every post. We all recognise the need to say cunting sainsburys every now and then but all the time is a bit much, we think.

As we say in our Talk Rules and Netiquette:

"It's not our policy to delete swearwords but we do draw the line at obscenity, so, if you're not sure which side of the line your swearword of choice may fall, it might be best not to use it."

Cheers.

I know what llarerggub's name means.

Mine is not as white as the driven snow either.

chattermouse · 29/09/2009 17:40

Your name choice reveals you as a right cunt nevergoogled

hullygully · 29/09/2009 17:40

IJAFW - inappropiate use of a French word. Stake.

Slubberdegullion · 29/09/2009 17:41

Ah back to the 'fuck you' strategy eh censored?

chattermouse · 29/09/2009 17:44

I temporarily changed my name to CuntFuckerSmith earlier as a show of solidarity for CW and so as to fly in the face of proposed censorship. I used it for a few hours and no-one from mn contacted me to complain.

but the beauty of names like yours Dragonbutter and LLareggub is that you aren't being offensive in an obvious and rather childish way.

your names are inspired...even if you hadn't meant to.

As i said if you really need to use foul lanugage in your posting name then post as sCUNThorpe or something.

at least make an effort to try and seem creative

hullygully · 29/09/2009 17:46

How is objecting to censorship the same as having a fuck you attitude? Inconsistent argument. Stake.

Lulumama · 29/09/2009 17:46

also not keen on the 'fuck you' strategy

what is wrong with some compromise?

hullygully · 29/09/2009 17:48

Compromise. How about if everybody gets to use any words they choose and everybody gets to ignore any they don't like?

hullygully · 29/09/2009 17:49

Taking offense is pointless and dull, unless actual harm to a person/persons has been proposed.

Stake?

Buda · 29/09/2009 17:54

hullygully - sorry about that. Couldn't be bothered typing Budapest.

Dragonbutter - wasn't your name originally a because you like both dragonflies and butterflies? I seem to remember reading that once. And I laughed when you discovered what it really meant. I have never plucked up the courage to google it! And I really loved what you did when you added "nevergoogle" to the original.

noddyholder · 29/09/2009 17:55

Tbh its a bit puerile and cringey.Everyone likes a good swear and there are times when no other woeds will do but day in and day out on here it loses its impact and just looks a bit try hard-y.Well done Mn

hullygully · 29/09/2009 17:55

NH horrific reminder of offensive 70s band. Stake.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 29/09/2009 17:57

It was a year ago i added the nevergoogle.

Until then nobody noticed. I hope.

Thanks Buda. That is exactly what happened.

Slubberdegullion · 29/09/2009 17:58

FU attitude wrt censored's experiment.

I see you are testing to see if mnhq will actually interevene, but why do it? How childish. If you put cunt in your nickname then first and foremost you offend (some) people. Why do you want to behave like this? What benefit to you or to this site/community does that have.

Why is your 'right' to use cunt as a name more important than someone else's right to come on mn to talk about hoovers and not see an offensive name coming up again and again and again in active convos?

noddyholder · 29/09/2009 17:58

why is dragon butter a problem?

hullygully · 29/09/2009 18:00

It's NOT first and foremost. First and foremost is your right to put what ever you want. You can choose whether or not to take offense.

Slubberdegullion · 29/09/2009 18:01

hullygully

"Taking offense is pointless and dull, unless actual harm to a person/persons has been proposed".

"Compromise. How about if everybody gets to use any words they choose and everybody gets to ignore any they don't like?"

What a load of utter bobbins to both of those posts.

Mamazon · 29/09/2009 18:01

Noddy - it is the name given to an act performed by two utterly derranged consenting people

noddyholder · 29/09/2009 18:02

I suppose I'll have to google now I didn't realise I was SO square
