Swearing, nicknames etc

Afternoon Mumsnetters,

There's been a bit of discussion about offensive nicknames. We do allow swearing on MN, as you know - it's a site for grown-ups, not for children - but as our overriding aim is to make folks' lives easier and many Mumsnetters object to the use of the c-word, in particular, we think it would be best if folks didn't use it in their nicknames. Using it as a nickname effectively means you are using it not for effect but for every post. We all recognise the need to say cunting sainsburys every now and then but all the time is a bit much, we think.

As we say in our Talk Rules and Netiquette:

"It's not our policy to delete swearwords but we do draw the line at obscenity, so, if you're not sure which side of the line your swearword of choice may fall, it might be best not to use it."

Cheers.

I think the point is noone felt the need to object about names like anyfucker or queenoffuckingeverything but people did feel the need about cuntwhacker. I didn't object but I can see why others did. Is it such a hardship NOT to have offensive words in you name? Can you not be witty without it? I am pretty sure you can reading the posts on here.

BTW Morningpaper how the hell did you even find that link?????

Lulumama · 29/09/2009 17:31

MNHQ have the final say, i guess, but MN done fine as self moderating for a long while now. obviously it is the hot potato du jour and needs discussing. which is better than just saying

no more swearing ever or yer all barred

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2009 17:31

Are you trying to be tough, Lulu?!

chattermouse · 29/09/2009 17:31

If we want to get all shirty and outraged surely 'bastard' is a much more offensive, discriminatory and prejudiced word isn't it?

Censorship is nothing but a slippery slope....

CNyle · 29/09/2009 17:32

sassy
that word
banned

Slubberdegullion · 29/09/2009 17:32

I have read the thread, and the others.

Why is it insidious? It seems to be rather a victory for civility and manners to me (oh and I know how winceworthy those words are to some).

afaik mn haven't done any censoring yet, I'm assuming CW has namechanged of her own accord (I apologise CW if you are still on the thread, I'm a little slow on the namechanging pick ups today).

There is nothing wrong or bad or slipperyslopishness about a group of posters standing up and saying 'hey - too far' and mnhq concuring with them. There is only one word up for censorship discussion atm and only in the context of nicknames.

Mamazon · 29/09/2009 17:34

can i just say i am getting a tad concerned about the frequent naming of CW on these threads.
the posting name was indeed very ill considered but i realy do think she has taken quite a bashing over teh last 24 hours and it is quite unecessary.

so in that aspect alone CENSORED i agree with you

hullygully · 29/09/2009 17:34

How richly, richly ironic that the only word up for censorship on MN is cunt.

I've been reading the debate on and off today and have been wondering about my name. Does anyone find it offensive? I hope not; it isn't meant to be. I honestly hadn't thought of it in that way.

I have never figured your name out llareggub!

hullygully · 29/09/2009 17:36

I find your name hideously offensive. Get thee to the stake, there's an orderly queue forming.

llareggub · 29/09/2009 17:37

Read me backwards...

Buda · 29/09/2009 17:37

Aah! Ding. Penny drops. No - like it. It's clever!

Mamazon · 29/09/2009 17:37

well it just goes to show how dim i am....i hadn't even realised your name was well, what it is

nevergoogledragonbutter · 29/09/2009 17:38

Can I ask where I stand with my name then?
It was never intended to be offensive.
But it is.
But then not obviously offensive or recognisably offensive.
Does that make sense?

Bothers me a bit because i'm really not filthy but it does seem to make people laugh.

hullygully · 29/09/2009 17:38

Buda - as a non-practising Buddhist I find your name offensive as well, especially as you can't even spell it. Stake.

hullygully · 29/09/2009 17:39

NGDB. Stake.

Itsjustafleshwound · 29/09/2009 17:39
