Swearing, nicknames etc

Afternoon Mumsnetters,

There's been a bit of discussion about offensive nicknames. We do allow swearing on MN, as you know - it's a site for grown-ups, not for children - but as our overriding aim is to make folks' lives easier and many Mumsnetters object to the use of the c-word, in particular, we think it would be best if folks didn't use it in their nicknames. Using it as a nickname effectively means you are using it not for effect but for every post. We all recognise the need to say cunting sainsburys every now and then but all the time is a bit much, we think.

As we say in our Talk Rules and Netiquette:

"It's not our policy to delete swearwords but we do draw the line at obscenity, so, if you're not sure which side of the line your swearword of choice may fall, it might be best not to use it."

Cheers.

Blackduck · 29/09/2009 18:02

utter bobbins oh I haven't heard that in a long time

hullygully · 29/09/2009 18:03

Bobbins...! Marvellous. But hardly an erudite rebuttal.

noddyholder · 29/09/2009 18:03

Where is the vomit emoticon when you need it!

hullygully · 29/09/2009 18:03

I'm afraid Bobbins does mean the stake. Join the queue.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 29/09/2009 18:04

Use of * instead of unt. Stake. Oh no, you've already been sent there.

fanjolina · 29/09/2009 18:07

Slubber - just been told on grapevine that CW got de-regged and banned by MNHQ

BitOfFun · 29/09/2009 18:12

And what is this grapevine of which you speak?

Does it have mould on it?

massivepants · 29/09/2009 18:12

Really? Banned? OOOOOOOOOOOO! I read the CW thread a thought it was funny. Although i do think the C word is a trifle unnecessary.

no mould, just a book of faces

Mamazon · 29/09/2009 18:16

i would imagine that MNHQ have asked her to name change and when she has refused she has either de regged herself or MNHQ have explained that the posting name is offensive and that they have listened to the majority and acted appropriatly.

I would like to hear form MNHQ as to whether CW has indeed been banned or whether this is a chinese whisper.

LuluSkipToMyLou · 29/09/2009 18:16

If that's true then I guess this isn't the place for me. Unless there's a HELL of a lot more to it than just the nickname.

noddyholder · 29/09/2009 18:17

You can't choose whether or not to take offense how ridiculous. If that was the case no one would ever choose that option! And no one would ever be offended. It doesn't offend me but I still don't like it because it seems unneccesary and lacking in imagination.

Not aimed at you Mamazon...

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2009 18:18

Who was CW anyway?

Seems a bit off to de-reg and ban her - why not just ask for her to change her name (back)?

fanjolina · 29/09/2009 18:18

It does seem a severe action from MNHQ.

And if CW is who I think she is, there is no doubt she would have changed name if requested.

chattermouse · 29/09/2009 18:19

OMG at CW outcome if true. That is shocking. Welcome to Babycentr*, have a hug, hun xxxxx

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 18:22

Now, here is an experiment for you Censored and hullygully.

The entire next week you introduce yourself as Fanny Cunt-Whacker, and in addition wear your name on a badge, and see if you get a few eyebrows in real life. Similarly, change the signature line of your email, and tell people in your work place that you have changed your name by deed poll and this is what you prefer to be named as of now.

My thought is, if you cannot do it or say it in real life, then you shouldnt on a forum.

Oh FFS how stupid are some people? You know, the reason 'Fuck off you silly cunt' is the only response to people who bleat and whine about swearing is because they are such narrow-minded smug morons. 'Waaah!' they cry. 'My child might read a naughty word and its head might fall off.' People like this never seem to be worried about their DC reading far more upsetting things than swear words over their shoulders - should we ban threads about DV, or dying children/parents, because they might frighten DC or give them nightmares?
ONce and for all, a few swear words won't kill you. It may well be silly attention-seeking behaviour, but the more you shit yourselves with outrage and insist that Something Must Be Done, the more aggravation it is for everyone all round. A very simple lesson that some people are sadly too stupid to learn is that being offended every now and again is the VERY LOW price you pay for freedom of speech.
