Swearing, nicknames etc

Afternoon Mumsnetters,

There's been a bit of discussion about offensive nicknames. We do allow swearing on MN, as you know - it's a site for grown-ups, not for children - but as our overriding aim is to make folks' lives easier and many Mumsnetters object to the use of the c-word, in particular, we think it would be best if folks didn't use it in their nicknames. Using it as a nickname effectively means you are using it not for effect but for every post. We all recognise the need to say cunting sainsburys every now and then but all the time is a bit much, we think.

As we say in our Talk Rules and Netiquette:

"It's not our policy to delete swearwords but we do draw the line at obscenity, so, if you're not sure which side of the line your swearword of choice may fall, it might be best not to use it."

Cheers.

I think its childish to put a swear word in your nickname

if they can't say it even after 9pm on the telly i reckon its safe to say it would be considered offensive

alwayslookingforanswers · 29/09/2009 21:03

well I don't watch some stuff after 9pm because I find the language to be awful.

CuntFace · 29/09/2009 21:05

I like swearing. Sometimes it is vital. Where does my opinion count?

AnyFucker · 29/09/2009 21:06

NotanOtter, I apologise to you

The thread I was referring to named OtterInASkoda, not yourself

I withdraw my last comments

NotanOtter · 29/09/2009 21:09

many thanks

NotanOtter · 29/09/2009 21:10

cf - i wish you'd chsange name - swearing is great

just not on every single post

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 21:10

I still think that the best option is to simply hide posters.

AnyFucker · 29/09/2009 21:12

I get my cute, bigeyed, be-whiskered swimming creatures terribly mixed up

preciouslillywhite · 29/09/2009 21:21

Oh, fucknuts! I'm only here for the bastard adolescent type incontinent uncensored swearing (they won't let me do it on the East Dulwich forum )

(aaaaaand it's full of twats [twat emoticon])

BoffinMum · 29/09/2009 22:26

If there's one reason to use swear words in names it's so the politicians that come on for webchats are forced to type them out nicely as part of their responses. Best bit of MN, IMO.

I would name change to PuntingBoffinMum at this point but can't remember how to do that.

preciouslillywhite · 29/09/2009 22:35

when you find out, Boffin, let me know- intend to change mine to Precioustwattinglillywhitemummyofthree- to upset just about everyone

4SucksFake · 29/09/2009 22:45

no,no you need to be Precioustwattinglillywhitemummyof3

vickiadele · 29/09/2009 22:47

overmydeadbody · 29/09/2009 23:00

thumbwitch · 30/09/2009 02:02

at many of you very funny people!

TheHeadbangingWombat · 30/09/2009 02:05

Oi Tw! Aren't you supposed to be doing some work?

DevonDorsetMum · 16/02/2010 18:00

Agree, and people shouldn't be told that if they don't like the swearing they should go elsewhere. Why should a site for months be dominated by the foul-mouths?
