Swearing, nicknames etc

Afternoon Mumsnetters,

There's been a bit of discussion about offensive nicknames. We do allow swearing on MN, as you know - it's a site for grown-ups, not for children - but as our overriding aim is to make folks' lives easier and many Mumsnetters object to the use of the c-word, in particular, we think it would be best if folks didn't use it in their nicknames. Using it as a nickname effectively means you are using it not for effect but for every post. We all recognise the need to say cunting sainsburys every now and then but all the time is a bit much, we think.

As we say in our Talk Rules and Netiquette:

"It's not our policy to delete swearwords but we do draw the line at obscenity, so, if you're not sure which side of the line your swearword of choice may fall, it might be best not to use it."

Cheers.

But isnt that censorship???

sorry to shoite stir maybe but how do you choose what is offensive and what isnt....

if someone picks an offensive name will they be warned??

I find some names really quite funny, rather like some comedians jokes...and it is all about choice isnt it, I mean you dont have to read the posts do you ?

hullygully · 29/09/2009 14:55

Burn Stopin! Burn her burn her. Dissent in the ranks. I'll get the pitchforks.

CayPeag · 29/09/2009 14:57

How's poor old cain these days anyway? Still stuck in teh punt? [out of touch]

stoppinattwo · 29/09/2009 14:57

Im unburnable I tellya.............

Dont give in to peer pressure hully

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2009 14:59

I particularly liked this one, especially given the review that it was given by one its readers

"There is a wide range of projects in this book, from the reasonably straightforward to those which call for a sizeable degree of skill. I rather struggled with the hydraulic probe, but what an intense burst of satisfaction I experienced on completion! This is a fine selection of designs certainly, but I shall only be giving it four stars. Doreen has grown quite attached to her 'Bastille Battering Ram' and I am being asked to refuel the petrol-driven engine at least once a week! However, personally I believe that natural ways are the best and I soon found myself returning to more traditional methods- a king-sized tub of lard and a rubber glove is more than enough for me!"

Makes Friday night on MN seem fairly tame!

Nobody is pinning your face infront of the screen and forcing you to read...........Im only mnetting because ive run out of everything else i can do and the only thing left is to tackle DD's room or do the garden.....and its raining......so i mnet

hullygully · 29/09/2009 15:00

I can no longer resist. I must burn, I want to smell smoke and hear penitents crying at the stake. I think I was Torquemada in a previous life. That's what we need, an Inquisition - did you intend offence, or not? If you burn you're innocent and if you don't you're guilty and we'll drown you instead.

seeker · 29/09/2009 15:01

I'm not shocked by the use of the word 'cunt" However, I am outraged that a word that means a woman's genitals continues to be one of the worst swear word there is. It is a basically a woman hating word, and perpetuates the mysogenist mind set that still pervades Britain today.

Ahhhhh but isnt Twunt an adopted mn word...imvho is far more offensive as it is made of the C and the T word........an offensive synergy non??

ApplesinmyPocket · 29/09/2009 15:04

Marvellous book, thanks for pointing us to it MP!

A review review: "This is a wonderful book and I am glad that I came across it."

curlyredhead · 29/09/2009 15:05

So does that mean you want the word cunt used less or more seeker? Or is it a change of juse from figurative to literal?

I am not sure MN are going to censor - I read it that they are asking people to think first about what posting names they chose.... Or am I misreading?

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2009 15:09

Not sure I really agree with this either. I thought we were consenting adults on this site?

Somebody is always going to be offended by something. There will be as many people who think 'AnyFucker' is offensive as there are who think it's funny.

Where will it end?

Hmm
BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2009 15:13

Sounds like there will have to be the establishment of a name approval committee

Remotew · 29/09/2009 15:14

Where will it end if it's a free for all having as many swear words in their name as possible, cos that's where it was heading.

Thank Justine, I'm glad you have asked people to change their posting names.

WhereYouLeftIt · 29/09/2009 15:20

Oh those books - that's Christmas sorted then . I must be really naive, I've never even imagined such items on Amazon ...

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2009 15:20

So what? I really don't mind. They're just words.

And sometimes it's funny.

We've already been asked not to swear in thread titles (no more 'cunting Sainsbury's') and now been asked not to use swear words in our nicknames. How long before we have to start typing sh!t, or bl**dy, like you do on other sites?

VulpusinaWilfsuit · 29/09/2009 15:22

Quite depressed by this tbh. Anyfucker's name makes me smile every time I see it.

Can't you just say 'There are other parenting talk sites available should you find this one offensive'?
