Swearing, nicknames etc

Afternoon Mumsnetters,

There's been a bit of discussion about offensive nicknames. We do allow swearing on MN, as you know - it's a site for grown-ups, not for children - but as our overriding aim is to make folks' lives easier and many Mumsnetters object to the use of the c-word, in particular, we think it would be best if folks didn't use it in their nicknames. Using it as a nickname effectively means you are using it not for effect but for every post. We all recognise the need to say cunting sainsburys every now and then but all the time is a bit much, we think.

As we say in our Talk Rules and Netiquette:

"It's not our policy to delete swearwords but we do draw the line at obscenity, so, if you're not sure which side of the line your swearword of choice may fall, it might be best not to use it."

Cheers.

Censored don't think mnhq looking for a fight or to 'prove' anything , just hoping posters will use common sense i guess!

Cheese ooh much blaspheming ahead

Sassy you back then

Mamazon · 29/09/2009 19:35

because i have no desire to deliberatly wind people up.

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 19:35

Censored - a rebel without a cause. Taking on the great battle against "freedom of speech".

I don't object to swearing in posts. I do object very strongly to the use of the word "cunt" as a swear word - for reasons which should be obvious to any woman who thinks about it for more than half a second. It's misogynist and woman hating and claiming to use it in a 'reclaiming' way is the same as the "laddettes" of the 1990s trying to convince the world that drinking 10 pints of lager and falling over was in some way a feminist statement.

Grown up women know better.

cheesesarnie · 29/09/2009 19:43

QueenOfFuckingEverything-yep!friday is move day!we got the house we wanted!tis a bit annoying as its a new build and its not been signed off yet by builders so council tax/water etc is confusing!

chattermouse · 29/09/2009 19:44

So Sassy is CW?

CayPeag · 29/09/2009 19:45

QS - a prude without a clue - "Taking on the great battle against "freedom of speech". "?

QueenOfFuckingEverything · 29/09/2009 19:45

Ah cracking news cheesesarnie

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 19:50

Geeez, I did type a bit of incoherent nonsense there.
not against, naturally.

Mamazon · 29/09/2009 19:53

its hardly prudish to ask that people try and post with some common sense and at least attempt some wit

NotanOtter · 29/09/2009 19:55

if you think you want to use swear words of whatever ilk in your name please do continue

censorship would be awful

i grew out of this sort of thing at about 15 when i realised it was not nice to offend people - even if their sensibilities were not the same as my own

I love clever usernames

CayPeag · 29/09/2009 19:59

Well Mamazon, I guess the pram thread's next for the axe then

Mamazon · 29/09/2009 19:59

exactly Otter. if you really must name yourself Cunt then just namechange to NickGriffin

sassy · 29/09/2009 20:00

No, sassy is sassy. Always has been. About 7 years on here. No whacking of female parts here thanks.

Those books linked further down the site are brilliant.

The guy sitting at his bench carving sex toys is killing.

AnyFucker · 29/09/2009 20:45

NotAnOtter, you sound rather sneery there

"I love clever usernames..."

Methinks that thread where your name was touted as the best on MN has gone to your head....

Interestingly, also on that thread were approximately equal numbers of people professing a love for my name

Not that I was counting

ZephirineDrouhin · 29/09/2009 20:52

lol at seeyounexttuesday

Itsjustafleshwound · 29/09/2009 20:53

Isn't this just a variation on the old chestnut about not using sensational words and phrases in thread titles ... ???

Again, there is no evidence that there is any censorship - just a request for a large dose of comon sense when posting and choosing a username

NotanOtter · 29/09/2009 20:54

ANYFUCKER get it wrong

  1. i never sneer
  2. there was no thread touting my name as best on mumsnet

GAH

alwayslookingforanswers · 29/09/2009 20:55

"usually deemed to be offensive"

and how the frigging hell do you decide which ones warrant being classed as offensive and which ones don't? Where do you draw the line?

And no I haven't read all the thread, and am not going to - so if the above question has already been asked/answered please can someone just summarise for me please. Can't cope with 300 odd posts tonight.

NotanOtter · 29/09/2009 20:55

was thinking of a namechange myself
