You might notice things are looking a bit different today. We’ve given Mumsnet a colour refresh, based on feedback from you in our surveys (thank you!).

We’ve also moved a couple of things around to reduce clutter and make things easier to find:

  • Watch now sits under the OP post
  • Report has moved into the meatball menu (the three dots on posts)

As ever, we’d love to hear what you think, so please share your feedback below.

Maybe the site could revert to the old version in the meantime?

Seems like a sensible suggestion and easy to implement. It's not like they've not had all day to make changes I suspect MNHQ will sadly just ignore the issue as it's the weekend now.

Woompund · 19/09/2025 17:56

But why did you do it?
The colours didn't need changing. They are ALL worse now. I want the darker green and purple back please! I don't like the bright blue but I can live with that, but I want my posts and the OP's to actually be visible when you're scrolling a thread. They are so pale now and invisible.

I agree with you about the post background, but actually hate the blue too. It's as though I've strayed onto the NHS website by mistake, though that's actually much better in terms of readability and contrast.

CriticalCondition · 19/09/2025 18:06

@KatyMumsnet

  • Why are you adding more background colours to dark mode only?
  • Why aren't you also adding them to light mode?
  • What will these colours be?
  • How will you decide on these colours?
  • Why can't you add purple and green back into the choice of colours?
Zippedydodah · 19/09/2025 18:12

One benefit I guess is that I’m not going to be spending much time on MN , it’s given me a bad headache with the ghastly luminous blue and the stupid headings on the OP and my post are simply ludicrous.

SummerFrog25 · 19/09/2025 18:13

KatyMumsnet · 19/09/2025 15:17

Just to follow up so it’s clear: we’re not ignoring the concerns about brightness.

The colours do pass accessibility tests, but we recognise the feedback that they can still be hard to read. We will be making them a shade darker to improve contrast and reduce brightness, and we’re prioritising this change as soon as possible.

@KatyMumsnet

im pleased you're listening & making some changes. I'll keep checking back because I can't use it like this🥹

could you not just add back the old colours so those of us who want to can just continue to use those??

NapoleonsToe · 19/09/2025 18:16

Whilst you're sorting out the colours, please get rid of the banners, they're a distracting waste of time - the my posts banner could be dangerous for users and the original poster banner is entirely pointless.

Kreepture · 19/09/2025 15:06

Give us back our Purple and green. We do not want piss yellow, and pink!!

I also don't believe for one second that this passes accessibility, not when EVERY user so far who has moaned who has sensory/visual impairments has said its too bright and causing headaches and eye strain.

Give us back our Purple and green. We do not want piss yellow, and pink!!

what she said ^^^^^^

FeralWoman · 19/09/2025 18:23

The new main blue is hideous. Too bright and it’s childish IMO. It hurts my brain and eyes and I’m prone to migraines.

The stupid OP tags and my post tags need to go. Their colours suck too.

I want the nice pale green back for the OP posts and the purpleish colour for my posts. Currently I’ve got grey selected for OP posts because it hurts my eyes less than the new blue or new green.

Seriously, who has done these changes and who approved them? A high school Gen Z on work experience? A young hip tech group where no one is over 25 and everyone has perfect eyesight? A lot of MN users are older, tired, using it in low light conditions once the children are in bed, have eyesight issues and want a website that doesn’t beat up our eyeballs or brains.

Bring back the old colours. They were great. These new ones are shit and should get in the bin. Pay the tech people some overtime and get them to fix it ASAP. You’re going to lose ad revenue because users won’t be using MN at all or will be using MN less while the colours suck.

Haulage · 19/09/2025 18:27

This pissy pale miasma/ touch of swamp pretence at green really couldn’t be uglier 🙄

I agree with all of this.

The only good thing about the change is that I'm spending considerably less time on MN.

I suspect this is not what MN wanted.

Haulage · 19/09/2025 18:44

Maybe it’s allegorical.

Colours associated with the suffragettes and therefore with women’s rights are binned off 💜💚 and in their place colours associated with regressive stereotypes are imposed 💙🩷

Maybe MN’s telling us something.

🧐

Hobnobswantshernameback · 19/09/2025 18:47

I suspect they hope if they leave it there long enough people will stop complaining
Sod the fact it's inaccessible if you have a visual impairment
Sod of the fact everyone hates it
Ahh we'll be a shame if the stats that show that mumsnet traffic has dropped significantly over recent months continued their downward trajectory
Not sure if all the annoying ads in the world will be making that much money if site usage continues to diminish at its current rate

Oh for sure they're kicking the can down the road to next week, hoping that the awkward squad will have shut up, and all the others who also don't like it will shrug their shoulders.

As a person who works in online spaces like this, I still don't understand why they have created this abomination?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/09/2025 19:02

I wish I could disagree, but I honestly don’t think MNHQ are going to reverse the changes.

They've already said they are going to change some things in response to the avalanche of complaints, so I'm living in hope at the moment.

Mum4MrA · 19/09/2025 19:09

I agree with the royal blue being headache inducing. Will have to reduce the length of time I spend on Mumsnet & do something productive.

Lalaloope · 19/09/2025 19:13

I know I'm a "freeloader" on mn Winkbut please change all the post colours (mine, OP and mnhq) back to what they were.

I also don't mind the freshly painted mumsnet blue but just not so bright.

Lunde · 19/09/2025 19:16

The muted OP/own post colours are a waste of time - only magenta is vaguely visible.

I have tried installing different OP colours and it currently says "green" but it is off white one my screen as is "grey"

Yamyamabroad · 19/09/2025 19:20

Another unwelcome change I've noticed is that when I click on the next page number it now takes me to the bottom of the next page ( unhelpfully where my previous post is still there as if it wants me to post it again) so I have to scroll right up to the top to carry on where I left off. I'm sure before that clicking on the next page number took you to the top of the next page not the bottom.

Can’t believe we’ll have to wait until next week😥

Another plea for purple and green please 🙏💚💜 @LizzyMumsnet @KatyMumsnet

I wish I could disagree, but I honestly don’t think MNHQ are going to reverse the changes.

Neither do I.

If MNHQ actually gave a shit about their users (and some of us are bloody paying for this crap) they'd revert back to yesterday morning's configuration and work on the issues on something not live before trying again

Boiledbeetle · 19/09/2025 19:27

On the plus side I've cleaned and sorted a lot of the kitchen cupboards today!

Hobnobswantshernameback · 19/09/2025 19:27

It's like they thought they'd just run it and use us as guinea pigs instead of testing it properly

@katymumsnet another suggestion - your comments don't show up as the OP (when you go to 'show all') which means it's only because others have quoted you that it's clear that MN are responding to the thread.

It would be better if the OP had come back to comment, so that the feedback and responses from MNHQ are easy to find as a show all. OR MNHQ in general should be in the 'show all'. (If this makes sense).
