A few updates to Mumsnet 🎨

You might notice things are looking a bit different today. We’ve given Mumsnet a colour refresh, based on feedback from you in our surveys (thank you!).

We’ve also moved a couple of things around to reduce clutter and make things easier to find:

  • Watch now sits under the OP post
  • Report has moved into the meatball menu (the three dots on posts)

As ever, we’d love to hear what you think, so please share your feedback below.

@KatyMumsnet

Why is your post showing up as the same colour as a thread creator? Surely MN staff should have their own unique colour (like they used to).

And please move the report button back. I had to scroll back up through an enormous post just to report. If it's not put back then I'll give up reporting - I usually only report the spamming advertisers which are normally very long.

All the "colours" are coming across as a dirty, pale shade (despite the OP colour being bright - how the heck does that happen??) except mine so yours and OPs do not stand out anymore so what's the point of colouring them now?

Another one wanting the old purple and green back please.

Yes, another one here. Had my posts as purple for as long as those colours have been available.

Why change the colours for the sake of it?

Change isn't desirable just because it changes something.

JaneJeffer · 19/09/2025 16:45

That’s right @NoBinturongsHereMate I thought they must have a function but obviously not!

ratinamustardhat · 19/09/2025 16:51

Everyone is telling you what the issues are. Nobody believes you tested this properly with real users.

We don't need further tinkering and a load of "sorry you feel that way". Revert this nightmare, particularly the blue. It was honestly pretty good before you "fixed" it.

The colours are dreadful. The site is too bright and the contrast is extremely poor. Reading mumsnet now is like fighting to get out of a vat of jelly babies.

Sowingbees · 19/09/2025 16:51

Lefwyn · 19/09/2025 15:33

Are you sure about that? (You might want to wait for the images to be approved before you answer.)

It has always been so on MN. A member highlights the problems that should have been already checked by paid members of staff.

limescale · 19/09/2025 16:55

Has anyone who was a tested made themselves known?

It's a cheap way to make website changes. Make the changes and see what your users do and don't like, and then react.

God knows why they’re carrying on with the infinite scrolling test then. It’s universally hated.

DinaofCloud9 · 19/09/2025 17:00

MN why did you actually bother changing anything? What's the point?

EtonMessy · 19/09/2025 16:40

@KatyMumsnet @LizzyMumsnet @MNHQ. Just admit you’re sorry and you cocked up with these changes and change everything back to how it was before !! Please take note of what users with disabilities are saying and also about the concerns about DV and the pointless My Post button !!
Elton might have said sorry is the hardest word but it really isn’t and neither is reverting to how Mumsnet was before!!

Seconded. Hell, I'd even do without the apology, the rewind would suffice 🙏🙏🙏

HansHolbein · 19/09/2025 17:05

And yes, put the report button back fgs. Doesn’t need an extra click.

DinaofCloud9 · 19/09/2025 17:00

MN why did you actually bother changing anything? What's the point?

This!

If there had been some sort of report, or that MNHQ felt the site needed a refresh it would make sense.

This just seems to be a move to get rid of users.

Particularly those with visual impairments, etc..

I have just caught up with the thread with the posts from this morning.

And I now have the physical reaction I get because of an eye condition, if for some reason I have had to sit in a room with bright over hear unshaded strip lights.

So even if I wanted to persist with other threads, I may find that will be my limit for today.

Never expected that using a web site would mean I have to increased my stock of pain killers.

Kreepture · 19/09/2025 17:19

i must admit i do not see the benefit in having the share button at the bottom rather than the report button,

I've never shared a post from this website in the 19 years of my being here. Why would anyone want to share a comment from a thread?

IwantToRetire · 19/09/2025 17:19

Just had a thought.

Maybe we should all use the 3 dots where report post is now (in OP).

And just keep reporting.

Not just to object but to provide a clear list of issues MNers are having.

Including the suggestion that if they do make changes like this they provide a guide. eg I spent what seemed like hours trying to unwatch a thread, and couldn't find how to do it. Whereas if they had explained in a guideline to changes.

Bettalam · 19/09/2025 17:25

If it ain't broke @LizzyMumsnet @KatyMumsnet ???

People are making it very clear that this "update" is a backwards step. People come here for downtime, for help and it's actually made it uncomfortable to the end user? Is that what MN want?

Please either roll it back or make it as close to what it was as possible. All of this, coupled with the stupid issue of the Active topic page jumping back up to the top, is frankly, absolutely crap.

SamphiretheTervosaur · 19/09/2025 17:29

Whoever told you it passes with the same accessibility scores lied to you... or took each piece separately and didn't check any combination

Its garish, headache inducingly too bright in the contrasts

Hoardasurass · 19/09/2025 17:30

KatyMumsnet · 19/09/2025 16:37

@Lefwyn Thank you for bringing this to our attention we will review and double check everything.

As mentioned previously, we will be updating the colours to ensure they are more contrasting and less bright, as we recognise this is an area where we can improve. We will double and triple check everything before we update it.

How soon can we expect this change as I'd really rather not have to pop on to this site and risk a migrain to check if its usable again nor do I need the visual issues that dark mode (the only way I can even look at the site now) due to my dyslexia?

MargaretThursday · 19/09/2025 17:32

Blueberry911 · 19/09/2025 15:50

I'm so glad that Mumsnet is reminding me of what my own posts are, just in case there were any concerns about me getting early onset Alzheimers whilst posting on a thread and forgetting both my username and what I'd just posted.

Also sometimes I've replied to something and I don't want necessarily someone in RL to know that I've written a post.
I know that the chances are that someone, even sitting next to me, won't be able to see onto my phone and what I've written, but it just makes me uncomfortable. I'm sure there are people posting for whom it's even more of a worry.

Dontcallmescarface · 19/09/2025 17:33

Did nobody at the meeting think to say "well actually Justine is there a reason for the change that we could give the users?" Because so far none have been forthcoming and it comes across as an idea that was hatched over several glasses of wine/gin and nobody wants to admit it wasn't exactly the best of plans. Just get the I.T trainee to put it back to how it was, don't let them near any "ideas" meetings again and we'll say no more about it.

We’ll make the changes as soon as we can, but the earliest they’ll be live is early next week. I’m afraid we can’t move any faster on this but it is top priority.

Not sure why you've added a picture of how to put dark mode on as that's what I'm using right now because its a choice of that and the vision issues that dark mode cause me or the migrain that the new colour update are causing.
However thank you for the answer about the time scale, I'll be logging off until next week and hopefully you'll have it fixed by then.

Maybe the site could revert to the old version in the meantime?

Yes please.

I don't get how it managed to be changed with zero warning as I went from one post to another, but changing it back is apparently impossible and even some tweaks will take a week Confused

It's just a few bits of css. Could be done in minutes by the web agency/internal team who did the change. Mumsnet are clearly having some internal discussions 😉
