You might notice things are looking a bit different today. We’ve given Mumsnet a colour refresh, based on feedback from you in our surveys (thank you!).

We’ve also moved a couple of things around to reduce clutter and make things easier to find:

  • Watch now sits under the OP post
  • Report has moved into the meatball menu (the three dots on posts)

As ever, we’d love to hear what you think, so please share your feedback below.

Hi all,

Thanks so much to everyone who’s taken the time to share feedback on the recent updates, we’re working our way through your comments!

A couple of quick updates:

  • If you’d prefer a different look, you can customise colours under Settings > Talk settings. From there, you can choose how your own posts and threads by author are displayed.
  • We’ll also be adding the Watch button back to the bottom of the page shortly.

Hi all, just to update - thanks for all your feedback - we've been going through it carefully.

To address some issues raised so far about the changes:

  • Colours and contrasts were all checked for accessibility, and both the new blue and the new post colours meet AA standard and in many cases AAA which is gold standard for accessibility (the old blue and new blue both pass at exactly the same rate), AA is the standard across the majority of websites. That said, we know some of you are finding the new colours harder to look at on certain devices, so we will be making the colours a shade darker to increase contrast and provide more distinction.
  • No change has been made to the brightness of the white background on posts.
  • Removing the username and timestamp from deleted and withdrawn posts is a bug, which we’re fixing now.
  • We’ve also heard concerns that highlighting your own posts so clearly could cause issues in domestic violence situations. We are taking this feedback very seriously and will be implementing a setting so people can hide the labels.
  • Moving the Report link was a data-based decision following no material change in the number of reports in testing but we’ll be monitoring closely to make sure it doesn’t reduce the number of useful reports and of course we won’t hesitate to move it back, should we see any decline.
  • We will also be adding different background shades for posts in dark mode.
Other questions that have been raised:
  • Save vs Watch: Save will add the thread to your saved list without notifying you. Watch will notify you about updates to the thread (unless you disable notifications).
  • We are currently working on the problem with not landing in the right place on the thread when you click back. It’s a complicated issue, so it’s taking a little while to fix - but we are on it.

It will take a few days to make these updates, but we’ll get started right away and you should begin seeing the changes on the site next week.

Thanks again for all your feedback!

@BestIsWest we will be making those colours a shade darker too

KatyMumsnet · 19/09/2025 15:17

Just to follow up so it’s clear: we’re not ignoring the concerns about brightness.

The colours do pass accessibility tests, but we recognise the feedback that they can still be hard to read. We will be making them a shade darker to improve contrast and reduce brightness, and we’re prioritising this change as soon as possible.

KatyMumsnet · 19/09/2025 16:37

@Lefwyn Thank you for bringing this to our attention we will review and double check everything.

As mentioned previously, we will be updating the colours to ensure they are more contrasting and less bright, as we recognise this is an area where we can improve. We will double and triple check everything before we update it.

How soon can we expect this change as I'd really rather not have to pop on to this site and risk a migrain to check if its usable again nor do I need the visual issues that dark mode (the only way I can even look at the site now) due to my dyslexia?

We’ll make the changes as soon as we can, but the earliest they’ll be live is early next week. I’m afraid we can’t move any faster on this but it is top priority.

KatyMumsnet · 22/09/2025 12:59

The changes are currently in progress, and we’ve also agreed to add the classic colours back in. These will be available for you to select within your customisation options.

KatyMumsnet · 22/09/2025 17:13

You can now turn the 'My Post' and 'Original Poster' labels off in your settings: https://www.mumsnet.com/settings/talk

We've also changed 'My Posts' to 'My Post'. The other changes are in progress!

A few updates to Mumsnet 🎨

KatyMumsnet · 23/09/2025 17:00

Hi all,

Here’s an update on where things are with the recent changes:.

  • We've adjusted the blue to reduce brightness, while still keeping the refreshed look we set out to achieve.
  • The classic colours are back - you can now select them in your settings if you prefer the older style.
  • You can now turn off the “My post” and “Original poster” labels in your settings if you’d rather not see them.
  • We’re continuing to work on dark mode, based on your feedback.

Accessibility update: all required areas have been reviewed and meet AA standards. In the last release, there was one oversight where blue text appeared on a blue background and AA wasn't met. We're sorry about that and will be monitoring more closely to prevent similar issues in future.

Whilst the new lighter blue with white text passed accessibility tests, it's clear that some users found it less accessible so we’ve increased the contrast further to better support users who found it too bright. Some of the contrast checks raised in this thread looked at background-to-background areas (for example, white or green post backgrounds on grey), where WCAG does not require contrast testing. Our focus has been on every place where text is displayed (as per the guidance), and all of those pass at least AA accessibility standards.

We appreciate the time you’ve taken to flag issues and share concerns. Your feedback helps us make improvements that work better for everyone.
