You might notice things are looking a bit different today. We’ve given Mumsnet a colour refresh, based on feedback from you in our surveys (thank you!).

We’ve also moved a couple of things around to reduce clutter and make things easier to find:

  • Watch now sits under the OP post
  • Report has moved into the meatball menu (the three dots on posts)

As ever, we’d love to hear what you think, so please share your feedback below.

Sorry, but my eyes and head are telling me something very different than what is being claimed about accessibility. I've turned my brightness down from 50 to 25 and mn is still bothering my eyes when other sites are not.

KatyMumsnet · 19/09/2025 15:17

Just to follow up so it’s clear: we’re not ignoring the concerns about brightness.

The colours do pass accessibility tests, but we recognise the feedback that they can still be hard to read. We will be making them a shade darker to improve contrast and reduce brightness, and we’re prioritising this change as soon as possible.

GreenGreenGreenRed · 19/09/2025 15:17

It was me. I was using the pink. Blush

Harryalm · 19/09/2025 15:18

I hate the colour change. Not sure if it's because I'm dyslexic but it's just too bright. I've had to turn all the colour protection functions up just to write this post.

On the plus side, this could be great for my productivity because I will DEFINITELY be using your website less.

CarlaH · 19/09/2025 15:18

The brightness seems to come from the blue bits. The banner across the top, Watch Thread, new posts etc. It's almost luminous and that is what I mean by too bright.

I can't believe this - which standards approve blue on blue?

MalinandGo · 19/09/2025 15:20

@KatyMumsnet can you explain WHY the change was considered necessary? I think people are rather puzzled and it would probably help if you could say why it needs to be different.

Boiledbeetle · 19/09/2025 15:21

GeniuneWorkOfFart · 19/09/2025 14:31

Exactly

So many people are saying it's too bright which means something is too bright. You can't just go "nah it's not" and move on. It's too bright. It's brighter than it used to be and it hurts my middle aged eyes. End of.

This. Whether intentionally or accidentally as a result of fiddling too much Mumsnet have done something.

The brightness is ridiculous. It's causing migraines.

ScrambledSmegs · 19/09/2025 15:21

@KatyMumsnet It's not just the contrast - the colours do not match the description on my settings. Maybe the MNHQ devices have different display settings and you can't see what we're seeing, so here's a quick verbal description of the most visually offensive ones.

Green is now pale pastel Chartreuse (virulent yellow-green) - google it if needs be, I've never seen its like, apart from when I accidentally chewed too many Haliborange.

Purple/Lavender is pale/pastel peach. Imagine the worst bridesmaids dress from the 1980s, that's the colour it would have been.

L0bstersLass · 19/09/2025 15:27

JaneJeffer · 19/09/2025 15:13

What are the red dots at the side for?

@JaneJeffer, if you click on them you can see what's available in that menu.

Cancelthecake · 19/09/2025 15:27

We’ve also heard concerns that highlighting your own posts so clearly could cause issues in domestic violence situations. We are taking this feedback very seriously and will be implementing a setting so people can hide the labels.

@KatyMumsnet But you don't need a setting so that people can hide the (potentially very harmful) labels. Just take the labels away. Please could we have an explanation of the thought process behind adding them in the first place. It has always (well ever since I've been on here) been possible to use our settings to show OPs posts in one colour and our own posts in another. That worked fine - what was the reason for deciding to make the "colours" virtually indistinguishable and adding a bloody great glaring label.

Considering how many threads on MN relate to abuse/violence, it seems unbelievable that nobody, nobody actually saw this as an issue. Shameful.

Mine aren’t working then

TubeScreamer · 19/09/2025 15:30

I think it looks much better. Fresher and less dated.

just wish you would get rid of the very annoying pop up advert in the top right hand corner.

I think the brightness has been dialed down a little since yesterday. It could be my device decided to do it automatically.

Please let us have the suffragette colours again as an option.

Hoardasurass · 19/09/2025 15:42

Well I'm glad to see that you've moved the watch button back and have noticed that you've fixed the issue with the ad threads being illegible but can you please fix the colour and brightness or atleast come back and explain why the new settings which make the site unusable to anyone with visual impairments and/or migrain suffers @LizzyMumsnet or should we just assume that @mnhq is intentionally discriminating against disabled users?

HQ, is this what was accessibly approved? 😂 Don't lie now.

This deserves its own thread.

Blueberry911 · 19/09/2025 15:50

I'm so glad that Mumsnet is reminding me of what my own posts are, just in case there were any concerns about me getting early onset Alzheimers whilst posting on a thread and forgetting both my username and what I'd just posted.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 19/09/2025 16:21

L0bstersLass · 19/09/2025 15:27

@JaneJeffer, if you click on them you can see what's available in that menu.

The meatball menu ones aren't red. The ones on the notification menu are red, so I think Jane means those - which don't do anything if you click.

They appear to show which notifications are new. But that information is already shown by both text colour and shading, so the red dots are just another brightly coloured bit of screen clutter for no reason.

Lefwyn · 19/09/2025 15:33

Thanks for those. That's a lot of fails.

NebulousSadTimes · 19/09/2025 16:30

I have the same feeling about these changes as I do about the shite Radio 4 is replacing the good stuff with - us oldies/migrainies/insert issue of wedon'twantyoursortroundhere choice are no longer valued customers. Hence the dumbing down, or gaudy brightening, as the case may be.

KatyMumsnet · 19/09/2025 16:37

@Lefwyn Thank you for bringing this to our attention we will review and double check everything.

As mentioned previously, we will be updating the colours to ensure they are more contrasting and less bright, as we recognise this is an area where we can improve. We will double and triple check everything before we update it.

HansHolbein · 19/09/2025 16:40

Please remove the dreadful purple hue. It’s terrible when you click on active and see all the threads.

EtonMessy · 19/09/2025 16:40

@KatyMumsnet @LizzyMumsnet @MNHQ. Just admit you’re sorry and you cocked up with these changes and change everything back to how it was before !! Please take note of what users with disabilities are saying and also about the concerns about DV and the pointless My Post button !!
Elton might have said sorry is the hardest word but it really isn’t and neither is reverting to how Mumsnet was before!!
